I would install heavy duty farm fence material to a frame and cover the surface area next winter. You can either leave it year round or remove it in spring. You can then apply your plastic tarp to that fencing material or install insulation board to that fence and frame (thats what i used). That should prevent racoons and other animals from getting into the pond. You might even want to cover edges of that frame so animals can not dig under to get access. I kept chickens and ducks, it stopped the loss from racoons, opossums and Martins (large Mink family) and feral cats. Sorry that happened.
Forgot to add that i attatched mine with hinges so it can flip up and be secured to the wood wall of my barn. I would just drop it down and lock it in place. Hope this was helpful.
Oh my goodness. That is really sad. Hopefully you can get them all in for the winter. I had all my koi in the house for all of last winter in totes and buckets. That’s odd that it killed them but didn’t eat them.
It seems like he killed and saved for later. If you watch my following video, you can see that he came back later on that day to look for those dead fish which I already cleaned up.
I guess it killed and collected them for later. I just happened to discover his act early before he can take them all away. That’s why he came back and look for his kill.
Sad day! I've lost fish to raccoons and blue heron. Raccoons only eat the head and leave the body. Might want to let the pond ice over so they cannot get to the fish.
I am confused now. I am not sure what I am gonna next. I saw one small animal swimming/diving in loop trying to snag the fish today. I think it was more like mink. I didn’t think they would come again. 😩
@@PTranProductions once they know where food is at they will keep coming back until it's gone or something better comes along. Try setting a live trap.

Thank you very much for your detail suggestion! I’ll definitely look into doing something like that this spring or summer.

I don't understand why they would get attacked and not eaten. So tragic. How old are your kois? Sorry for your lost! 😢

So sorry Sad to watch buddy... Buggers
Yes, pretty bad! That bugger came back last night looking for his kill.

Yes, I will look into getting a live trap.
Thank you for your advice!
