  • Rescue crews returned to the Potomac River on Friday as they continued searching for victims of Wednesday night’s deadly midair collision between an American Airlines flight and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter.
Officials said the operation is fully focused on recovery, with no survivors expected. All black boxes have been recovered, according to the NTSB. Officials said that based on the information they have gathered, they have not made any conclusion about the cause of the crash.
"There's been a lot of questions and discussion regarding manifest. Let me make this very clear. The NTSB will not, and has not released a manifest. We have not in our history, not in our past. We will not be in this accident," said National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Board Member Todd Inman during a Friday evening news conference.

January 22: Donald Trump disbands the Aviation Safety Advisory Committee

January 29: first major mid-air collision in the US in 16 years
January 31: 2nd plane crash in just 3 days.
So Donald Trump has created chaos in the aviation safety system, and this always leads to lower safety and increased risk of accidents. But anything Donald Trump does wrong he will blame on someone else, like immigrants, LGBTQ, DEI, Democrats, or whatever. And his MAGA cult will defend it.

But his initial actions didn't CAUSE them. Even if he hadn't done all that you listed, these incidents would have still happened. I don't like what he is doing, either. But blindly blaming him for every bad that happens is pointless and doesn't help anyone. It's no different than him pinning all our issues on Biden and the Democrats.

Once a "fait accompli " it is futile to accuse anyone. The issue is to deal with the results which are tragic, for all involved. Not a good time to blame, anyone. It will turn up later. I see it as a terrible accident due to the lack of visual contact with the right airplane. The one, the ATC guy had in mind was not the same as the one the helo pilot was watching. It is obvious as they flew right into it. That is it, in a nut shell. The best way to avoid this is to keep helos from flying around the traffic of airports, where they do not belong. Helos do not need an airport, just a parking lot. Problem solved.

This briefing was very well done by the NTSB. However, it would have been not only nice, but professional as well as respectful on the part of the media that asked questions to PAY ATTENTION AND ACTUALLY LISTEN to the information presented, what was said and not what you thought you heard. By continually asking the same/similar questions over and over again trying to force different responses from the NTSB showed a complete lack of integrity all so the media could embellish and/or sensationalize their individual stories. The information provided was direct and to the point. The NTSB is certainly not responsible for what reporters on site misunderstood. This is an absolute tragedy all the way around and the media needs to show proper respect to all those affected and directly involved; WHICH DOES NOT INCLUDE THEM. In my not so humble opinion. Good grief. 🤨

It’s not a training area, though. It was a training flight running a standard helicopter route. Did they deviate in altitude (more than 200’) and positioning (middle of the river vs hugging the shore) from the route? At this time it appears so.
Perhaps in future authorities will alter this flight route so it can’t conflict with runway 33 traffic should the helo altitude deviate or decide that visual control is not allowed at night, etc. because it’s too difficult with all the urban lights to differentiate aircraft.

When they investigate an air crash it can take months or years. They gather every scrap of any plane or helicopter involved then piece it back together while looking closely multiple times at each and every piece. You can be talking about thousands of pieces, screws, bolts, springs all those along with big pieces and every other thing on the plane or ground. They look to see what makes the most sense according to that in-depth investigation. It is an unbelievable time consuming process. Anyone thinking they have all the answers immediately or even in a short time is being ridiculous. This crash is even harder due to it being involved in water.
They will in the end have a in-depth report after they have examined all the information and data but until then it’s speculation based on what they have so far but right now the investigation has just started.
I feel for all the families and friends that lost loved ones.
I hope they get answers quickly but it seldom works that way.

What a blanket statement. You're trying to make it sound difficult because you don't understand how easy it is.
The most important questions can be answered quickly. Just collect the data (audio recordings from the helicopter cockpit) to find out what they were doing. There was no mechanical failure. You don't have to go through the flight data (altitude, speed, heading, engine output) because the helicopter was in FULL CONTROL when it crashed. You just have to find out who was controlling it. There were two pilots in that helicopter. Both of them had access to the controls.

In the aftermath of 9/11 there was a lot of talk about permanently closing Reagan National Airport, because of how close the airport is to the heart of Washington DC. A compromise was finally reached that was strongly criticized by many in the aviation community. With a lot of restricted airspace around DC aircraft are limited to narrow corridors of space. In fact, the air corridors around DC are so narrow that they were strongly criticized by many in the wake of 9/11 for unsafe overlapping flight paths of different types of aircraft, and for bunching up air traffic into bottlenecks. Some back then predicted that it would only be a matter of time before a catastrophe occurred! Well here we are 23.5 years after 9/11, and an air catastrophe has now occurred under the exact circumstances that were criticized in the wake of 9/11. I think this disaster is what happens when the government and federal law enforcement refuses to the listen to the sound advice of aviation experts!

    Military family here.
The helicopter had two pilots. The pilot in command and the co-pilot. Both of them are responsible for aviation safety. If the pilot in command is doing something stupid (violating altitude restrictions, not seeing a passenger jet that is about to hit you) they should be stopped. The co-pilot should SPEAK UP. If that doesn't work, the co-pilot must TAKE CONTROL of the aircraft.
Aviation is all about team work. So is the army. If you don't understand team work (shared responsibility in the cockpit) then you should never join the army and never become a pilot. You're just putting other peoples lives at risk.
I smell a rat. This accident was not an accident. Both pilots were behaving like rookies. Criminal negligence, weaponized incompetence. Call it what you want, the army must take full responsibility for this. The air traffic control is not a "babysitting service" that looks after rookie pilots. Military must babysit their own pilots and keep them GROUNDED if there's any signs of reckless behavior.
Altitude violations (near the airport) should be punished severely.
