    MoFi Info: Not even the original "Talking Book" was pressed from the original master tapes but from production copies, like most records. Here is some info ( forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/talking-book-new-mfsl-silver-label-lp.252219/ ) In any case the MOFI Sound Lab Silver Label records are mainly sourced from the original master tapes and in some occasions 'from the best source available' not the other way araound. Again some info here: www.discogs.com/label/278856-Silver-Label-Vinyl-Series

    Blue Note Tone Poet series! As well, the Blue Note 80th anniversary series. All analogue sourced and expertly mastered. I have a couple of Tone Poets and an 80th and I highly recommend them-

    I would like to highly recommend Vanessa Fernandez's "Use Me" two disk, 45 rpm, 180gm, 12" vinyl. Even though you are "not a fan of heavyweight vinyl", this recording will knock you off your feet. Between her voice, which is made in heaven, and the distinctness of the instruments being played, I cannot believe you would not be amazed at the performance of this record. If you have Amazon music unlimited you can sample the music before you buy it, but the vinyl is mind-blowing. Eccezionalmente buono!

    @ 0:56 it says: "Spearkers Corner" - Typo
    I have some speakers corner pressings from original master tapes and those are truly magnificent.
    Not just the sound, its also pressed with almost no background noise and channel separation is very good.
    Especially Herbie Hancock - Man Child repressed by speakers corner is very good.
    I also have a record from Art Tatum and Ben Webster, pressed by PAN-AM recrods. It was like 15 euros, but it sounds very good.
    Only a bit of background noise, but I think it has to do with the tapes it came from, since it is music recorded on 1956.
    Now that you explained about DMM, I have discovered that this is also a DMM record, so maybe that explains why it sounds good.

    I just miss in the list "Mercury Living Presence" catalog.
    I have quite a bit of it, acquired in the late 80's in vinyl and redbook CD formats (both astonishing!).
    As far as I know, the last release was very few years ago, supervised by Wilma Cozart Fine and manufactured in German facilities (in high-grade vinyls and CDs) from the original tape masters, most of them engineered and/or produced by the legendary Robert Fine.
    I'm not sure if this extraordinary collection is now owned by London-DECCA label and if it is still available. But I must say that it is, with RCA "Living Stereo" series, the best of the best one can find in classical music recording between 1956 to around 1962.
    Very nice video. Thanks so much.

    Great video. I have watched many of your videos, and they're fabulous. I could really use some help when it comes to buying a used record at a store. Could you please teach the uneducated (me and probably many others) what exactly to look for on the cover, the inside gate fold, and/or the album itself to determine if it is a legitimate recording made from tape and not a reissue made from a digital source. Any type of list of acronyms, symbols, etc. that I/we could write down as a reliable check list would be very much appreciated!Thank you!

    Ciao! Complimenti per il canale, sto guardando tutto pian piano. Ho una domanda: le prime edizioni delle compilation degli anni 60, quelle che raccolgono i singoli (tipo Hey Jude 12" dei Beatles), come le valuti in termini di fedeltà? Sono paragonabili agli album veri e propri dell'epoca?
    Grazie!

    • @anadialog
      @anadialog  5 років тому

      Grazie mille! Le compilation purtroppo si portano dietro dei problemi spesso....i brani provengono da copie di copie e devono poi essere pesantemente equalizzati per avere tutti lo stesso volume e suono...mi buttetei senza dubbio sugli ultimi remaster, analogici o digitali!

    What is your take on classical/orchestrated music and digital format? Example, Star Trek the Motionless Picture has an amazing score recorded in 1979 and it was completely digital and sounds excellent on original pressing vinyl and original pressing CD. I have noticed that Classical formats starting doing digital way before rock/pop music did and for the most part that genre always offered better sound quality on all formats. Even cassettes from Capriccio Digital and other labels sounds top notch compared to typical label releases.
    High quality records I digitize them at 4800/24 bit and they sound exactly the same. Most records I buy I do not care how they sound, I just listen to them because its fun to go through the process of putting one on and its hard to skip around. I spend more time listening and not jumping around to different parts.

    • @anadialog
      @anadialog  5 років тому

      As I have always underlined, digital has a great potential completely destroyed by bad mastering, compression, limiting etc. required by today's music industry. The first digital recordings had their limitations, especially the converters, but at least they were not heavily reworked and that is why those recordings, on analog media, which softens and beefens up the sound, sound so good!

    I like to have a copy made when the artist was alive and as close to when it was recorded in the country it was recorded as I can afford. I know it weird but I’m also sane with books. When I read a first ed of a novel it’s like the author is there. Perhaps it’s an illness. It’s certainly more expensive!

    I would like to ask you how we should consider music recorded on digital tape (like Mitsubishi models, for instance) in the 80s and early 90s: is that as "digital" as Pro Tools records? Vinyl reissues of those digital tape recordings are not 100% analog, aren't they? Thanks!

    • @anadialog
      @anadialog  3 роки тому

      You mean DAT? Yes, that is 100% digital. Nevertheless, IMO the sound isn't like that of a CD. There are probably other distortions going on...

    • @AlfredoRoccia
      @AlfredoRoccia 3 роки тому

      @@anadialog Thanks! Yes, I meant reel to reel DAT, but as recording process, not as music format per se. So I understand today's vinyl reissues from DAT recordings are as "hybrid" (digital-analog process) as with later Pro Tools recordings, although DAT recordings still kept a material form such as tape - but their "soul" is nevertheless digital.

  • @simonmarsden66

    I'd be interested on your thoughts where a digital master has been made and they have done a good job. Digital does have a place I believe but needs to be used sympathetically

    • @anadialog
      @anadialog  6 років тому

      Hi there, you mean a conversion from analog or a native digital production?

    • @simonmarsden66
      @simonmarsden66 6 років тому

      ana[dia]log probably both really. Sometimes master tapes are in pretty poor condition so a digital transfer makes sense. Be interested in your take on this

    • @anadialog
      @anadialog  6 років тому +2

      Well, there are tons of fantastic digital mastering productions that are worth listening and spending for. The first examples that come to mind are all the fabulous masterings of JVC for their XRCD. Excellent digital transfers. Also the Steve Wilson remasters are very good, love the Yes ans Jethro Tull reissues. A good example of preferable digital to analog mastering IMO is the first album of Audioslave or Californication of RHCP. Also the Analogue Productions ans Chesky SACDs are very good. Among my favorites are the mastering processes behind the first DVD-Audio editions....astonishing fidelity!

    It was said that vinyl records became thinner during or after the oil crisis due to the higher price of oil. Can't remember exactly which
    But now they have gotten thicker again because now they can charge more for the vinyl records. Maybe even if you use the inflation calculator

    Id argue that Half Speed mastering and DMM are more gimmicky like the weight of vinyl rather than producing higher fidelity.

    • @anadialog
      @anadialog  6 років тому

      Well it depends....I think that each case is something apart. We can say that half mastering speed Nd DMM do not automatically deliver an excellent record...again if the recording and the rest of the production is of bad quality the rest won't much to the overall results

    • @fredontube
      @fredontube 5 років тому

      Since the cutting is a mechanical process involving moving mass, half speed mastering can be a benefit for high frequencies. This may or may not be significant.

      Kevin Gray has argued that modern 1/2 speed mastering is basically a gimmick by record companies in order to still utilize the old 1/2 speed equipment originally built to cut quad records. He has argued it can actually be detrimental to LP sound quality.

    And after all this just understand that not every MFSL, Half speed mastering, speakers corner, Japanese pressings etc are the best version of a particular album.
    A lot of the time the original cheapo version is better sounding than the expensive "audiophile" reissues, it's a case by case album by album situation.
    You can't just assume that just because it's come from an audiophile label and its $85 that it's the ducks nuts.
    Also if DMM achieved the best results why isn't every record done that way, same goes for half speed mastering if that produces the best sound then why wouldn't every audiophile label use it.
    Why don't we see DMM cut at half speed, played back at 45rpm on 200g Japanese Vinyl?

    • @anadialog
      @anadialog  6 років тому

      I agree! This video war dedicata to audiophile labels but I totally agree that each album must be evaluated on a case by case basis. It is also true that hardly you can go wrong on specific labels as Analigue Productions or Music Matters....
