Honestly, I'm religious and I agree with most of the points he made in this song, life shouldn't just be endured, it should be lived, when you're just waiting for death you're actually putting your faith in death rather than Jesus and focusing on this life

Yeah, alot of the stuff mentioned in the song prove the guy didn't know real sh!t about religion so he shouldn't even be talking. You're not just waiting for the afterlife or something in religion. And besides the life there isn't even "lavish" like every average person out there may believe about heaven. Not even close, since there won't be death in heaven we'll all supposedly be vegan. Not to mention, he's acting like you don't quite do anything for this good afterlife; acting like it's only heaven, that there is no hell you have to avoid.

i'm also pretty stupid but i think i get a LIIIIITTLE bit of slack. it's flipping 2024 and this song has been overused too much i mean it's a great flipping song but i mean when it becomes an overused stupid ass fuck tiktok song then i hate the world. i agree with this but i'd like to point out that a song can have multiple meanings at once, no matter how the artist wrote it to be seen as. then at that point we have to determine what the artist wrote it for. people can have different views and interpretations, but we can't exactly say they're wrong and that ours is right unless it's what the artist wrote it for. till then all meanings are correct. i think this could be the intended purpose. but the lyrics can also be supporting nostalgia in a way. i'm not sure if "a nostalgia song" is how to describe Notion, but "a song referring to life and the world when it was simple and great" which IS Nostalgic so well i kind of just unproved my point but what the Notion would be that is a lie is "Everything will be OK" CALMING BUT THATS NOT TRUE AND THATS NOT HOW THE WORLD WORKS. anyway my point is that well i support and love this video and appreciate the... Enthusiasm XD LOL and the PASSION for this song and the explanation to us idiots. thank you so much and well ye that's all
I would say the point is to live a life that we or others can be proud of and to try and make a positive impact on the world around us, even if it's just slightly. I would say the same to anyone who asks "if there's not an afterlife and we're all going to die eventually, than what's the point?"
Agreed. In religions it is about achieving everything obliged, just rest and have extreme pleasure? How can true joy exists without despair or challenges, too much happiness and light and like too much bliss with no form of darkness is like maybe trapped in a white hole and too much despair is like a black hole. Once ‘eternal bliss’ and everything is there, is there even any point in achievements, success, awareness, character development and purpose? It is just another void that will trap people in pleasure and helps develop egoistic traits. Religion was still essential for development of humans and can be a beautiful path but still that is my opinion.
dude this video was in my feed and im telling you this is the most awesome breakdown ive seen of this song. I've used this song to help tell a story about my lil character thing from it's meaning and like im also really frustrated how people arent really digging the whole futureproof album and like the message it tells and shit man. awesome work
wait people DIDN'T understand this?? "If you could pull the lever to carry on forever, would your life even matter anymore?" WHO WASN'T GETTING THIS???
I think it's the beat that makes it nostalgic, not the lyrics. Like how Outkast's Hey Ya is considered upbeat despite being about breaking up - "Y'all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance." The music feels nostalgic and that's what it's used for.
For my case, I was too stupid to actually listen to the lyrics but now I think after seeing this it just makes it more of a lovable and comforting song for me and SO MANY other people.
I js thought it was about nostalgia because I had like no idea what the guy was singing and I only heard it in edits but the lyrics make it super obvious
Unironically, this explanation made the song a ton lot more beautiful and poetic. Not because I didn’t understand it before, but because reading your explanation while listening to the song just triggered something in me. I’m not exactly atheist, but I don’t bow down to a god or anything. I believe in the existence of gods and stuff, just not like that. I think this song invokes nostalgia because of the tune and beat, but also because inheritly, even if we all share a collective brain cell, our brain naturally decipher the words into the deeper meaning. We just don’t consciously know it, so we call it nostalgia. It makes us feel deep emotions that we can’t place or otherwise explain, let alone have experienced. Hell most of the ppl who use this song in edits probably aren’t over 20 (I’m not). We don’t have a lot to be THAT nostalgic for yet. I loved this video. Good job.
Yay I like this I hate how people think it’s about nostalgia I’m Christian but I very much like this line. I agree with it in the context you explained it, 0:53
This song is relatable for me. As an ex-Christian (now atheist) when I was a little kid in catholic school I had a lot of people tell me I’d go to hell. When I left the religion I ended up having existential crises and had trouble coping with the atheist concept of death which made me more depressed than I already was. Actually I’m still depressed and am still struggling with coping and I don’t like thinking about death but maybe if I live a happy life I won’t feel scared or sad about it anymore.
What I’m boutta say is kinda long but trust me, just read it. Brother/sister please go back to Christianity. I understand u are depressed rn but your life will piece right back together if you put your faith in god. Trust me, and if you don’t, it’s fine, not much people are Christian nowadays sadly and I’m not gonna force religion on you. Also, if that catholic school you went to was telling you that you will be sent down to hell, that was NOT a catholic school which fits perfectly into the Bible verse of “Beware of false prophets”. Pls, rejoice with your savior Jesus, and you will overcome depression.
Its not like choosing christianity an answer for him, its really to find meaning in life. And religions is just some guide on how to live one thats good, thats why its important to have a religion no matter which god you believe in.@@JustinSantisgp-or5un
Honestly, if i left my religion i would have more trouble with the concept of death that it just goes black. Thats why i recommend you go around and try what people with religions (no matter which) do, see the benefit and the negative, then try to feel which you feel the most connection with. Im a muslim so i would recommend you do some of the practices (dont join any religion if your unsure to, because its not permitted to randomly quit the religion and join another one just for benefit) you need to really believe in it. Anyways i hope you overcome this trial brother. ❤
Here’s the thing; people often choose or reject religion to fix one problem in their life and that is it. The concept of death is frightening, but believing what you want to believe is not going to make you better. Religion is a way of life that honors God and all that is good, but some are so caught up in despair and fear they forget to love each other, and instead hate spread Christianity. Christianity is a loving and accepting life, but so many twist it.
even though im a christian, this song and the whole live your life to the fullest part, is great. i do believe we're here to live our lives greatly and take it all in, while also never forgeting and departing from God.
@@OmniKit yeah, dude appreciate it. some of us are TOO religious and think we can't do anything else other devotion. like what are here for other than worship dude?
well this song is nostalgic but not because of the lyrics but because of the fact that this is a song from my early childhood and I get reminded of the good times even though there were not many good times (I had a bad childhood, and parents were not the best gave me mental problems
Actually, correcting the perpetual in motion bit, perpetual motion doesn’t exist, adding onto the idea that while it’s cool to have something go on for eternity, it doesn’t actually exist.
I genuinely love this song so much, I listened to it a lot while I was going through my journey of deconstruction and discovery. Thank you for setting the record straight with this video
I just got recommended this and honestly your explanation pretty much kinda aligned with my own thoughts on the meaning of the song which correlates to the saying “momento mori” (remember you must die) and just as you did, I won’t say more cause really it’s just common sense + thorough listening, good shit man.
Hozier is my favorite artist and since I live in a predominantly Christian country, this is what I'd sing cuz not a lot of people notice the lyrics, much less know the music video lmfaoooo
It's such a meaningful song for atheists like me, it makes me emotional thinking of all the peer pressure and family pressure or even media influence when our existence is diminished. But I agree with it so much, afterlife and eternal life is scary to me, I want to treasure every moment of the life I already have because there's just 1 life we've got❤️
@@iExist543 the funny thing is in the bible it basically says your here for a reason and if God wanted, he could put you in this afterlife an the even funnier thing is Jesus tells people to live their life and don't dwell on the mishaps or what is to come after you die and btw this song is nostalgic but not because of the lyrics but because of the fact that this is a song from my early childhood and I get reminded of the good times even though there were not many good times (I had a bad childhood, and parents were not the best gave me mental problems)
Same fr (exept luckily my parents aren’t religious either) I only have one atheist/agnostic Freind, and because of where I live EVERYONE ELSE IS SUPER RELIGIOUS. It’s lowkey annoying because they always push it on me super heavily, and while I still love my friends, they need to chill with the preachy shit. I fully respect religion, but when you make it your whole personality it gets annoying af (which is ironic because a lot of those people say they dislike when gay people make that their whole personality but they also do the same) holy shit I just yapped and wasted like 3 mins damn
When people hear the line “OH BACK WHEN I WAS YOUNGERRR” they think, “oh this song is how he’s reflecting when he was young and the good times he had, songs have deep meanings and these little lines may not mean it’s about that one thing, but perhaps the entire song talking about something different.
on god those children on gorilla tag are so annoying like "WaAaAaAaAaaAAaA iM SO PIsSEd 😭AT GorIlaa🦍 TAg I wAS iN a COMPEtetiVE ⚔🤺 LoBby aND I GOt CalLED A CHEaTeR💻 BecOUsE I WAs LUCIo RuNNING 🏃♂"
As a Christian myself, I dislike how people in my belief openly talk about the end of the world like it's something to be yearned for (yap alert) God made this world with a purpose, and yet they treat this life as a means to a greater ends; not an end in itself. He still trusted us with this world, made us for it, made us with it, and we treat it like it's something that should be disposed. Think about it. If He went through all the trouble of recounting all of human history and creating the universe itself, why would we just go 'meh, doesn't matter'? Sure, heaven is something to still hope for, but we should enjoy our lives here too. God would want it. He'd rather see us soar to greater heights rather than to force ourselves down in 'servitude' to Him. He wouldn't like us arguing amongst each other over simple things, he'd want us to know more about the very universe He created. He'd love for us to have a good life. So what I'm saying is for my fellow Christians who wound up here, is that to be able to enjoy Heaven in its fullest, we should enjoy life here, not treat it as something disposable.
i never really knew this song. only saw the edits of "OH BACK WHEN I WAS YOUNGER" then i came across this video. my brotha explained it so well dawg. thank you
Who understood all of the lyrics this exact way first time they heard it, doesn't understand why people use it for nostalgia when it is not for that! AND agrees with the person who made this video. Me, completely.
you know, it does kinda make sense though, the author emphasizes on the limit of life, and just like childhood, it really goes away fast, a temporary paradise
2:05 my interpretation (that fits more neatly within the song as a whole) is that the "sunshine" doesn't refer to happiness in life, but rather as life in whole apart from death, and that "this momentary beam of light" refers to this specific, finite life, so that the line as a whole means you won't live forever, but you can live now edit: typo
@@iExist543 no, the interpretation of finiteness of life is likely the correct one here given the nature of the song. "Sunshine" refers to to living another day, in this sense the metaphor refers to living in itself, There won't always be sunshine meaning you won't always be here to live (since sunshine means a new day), momentary beam of light then appreciates this "beam of light" as long as it is. The other interpretation referring to ups and downs of life does not match well with the context of this song since the song talks explicitly about mortality.
I agree with you, to me it was like you won't have this perfect happy days even after death expecting sunshine and rainbows, life isn't gonna be enternal sunshines, it's just going to be another beam of light shining for a brief moment and you should cherish it.
HOW DID I NOT UNDERSTAND THE LRYICS IN THE FIRST PLACE 😭😭😭 Also thanks for the explanation, although I’m probably not gonna listen to this song anymore given that the meaning behind it contradicts with my beliefs 😅
Same bro it was my favorite song but now after I know the meaning of it. It kind makes me sad, I am religious and learning that one of my favourite sons is just telling that everything I belive in is a lie is kinda sad
1:26 "If you could pull the lever to carry on forever, would your life even matter anymore?" My intepretation of this line is that if you have the prospect, the promise of living forever and happily in an afterlife or be ressurected to a time of perfection, what would be the point of living here anymore if there's a much better place just waiting for you? Also this is exactly why I hate tiktok. They take short segments of songs, and people will only listen to THAT SEGMENT, and won't even listen to the full song to support their "favorite artist," and would prefer to listen to the lyrics videos or sped up audio edits. And no one actually listens to the lyrics; they just follow the trend. And it may sound odd, but humans have an interesting thing where we are attracted to things others are attracted to (a sadly hence as to why best friends are usually the ones to end up stealing your partners). So if you see a video- or a tiktok, i suppose- that has a lot of likes, you will probably like it too. The fact that so many people will claim that this is their "favorite song/artist" when they don't even actually listen to them fully or support the artists- it's genuinely infuriating. Also, please don't just take up after what other people say and make it your own truth. Discover things for yourself. Do your research. edit: My personal favorite The Rare Occasions song is actually Futureproof. I don't think it gets the recognition it deserves.
0:53 i really just looked the song's meaning up for this line i didn't know people misunderstood at as a nostalgia song and that is kinda funny but the meaning of the line is so beautiful, and its well-put by you too im in awe this is ART. i knew that but thank you for giving me a deeper appreciation for the song
I mean when it said 'when i was younger' i was like hmm then i heard 'torture beneath the earth' as well as 'ive seen the ending and there is no ascending' i pieced it together in my little noggin and realized hey this guy is some atheist that dosent believe in a life after death
i've loved the rare occasions for about a year and a half now, and notion is my favorite song of all time. i have to say that this video perfectly conveys how i feel about everyone's stupid tiktok edits lmfao, although i'm grateful they got the song to be as popular as it is because i would have never found my favorite band. and yes, i did find my favorite band from an unfunny racist meme.
Watching this for me feels like discovering what The Mind Electric is about. Hearing the guitar and drums while looking at a black screen (when there's no text) sends a lot of chills down my spine for some reason. Makes me love this video a lot.
you’re real as fuck for this btw, im tired of explaining basic fucking shit like this too 😭 nobody on any of these god forsaken apps has any media literacy
This is a swiftie level threat... also people do this type of things with other songs too, you do realize that right? they listen to the instrumental, not the actual lyrics themselves, which is why you catch people dancing to an upbeat song when the lyrics are in german talking about sex or something just as bad. People like the vibes the instrumentals bring, not the lyrics themselves 😭Put on your big boy pants here bucko... Because these "idiots" are people who are enjoying the song damn it 😭
Thank you for making this. I usually listen to songs but sometimes I don't know the meaning. This explanation helped me understand. Thanks for this explanation for us simpletons.
the fact that this was recommended to me but I've literally been listening to for like 3 days now.. I do understand some of them but I didn't expect THIS. what an idiot I am.. 😭
It's just the feeling it gives off, it feels like it's nostalgia if we don't listen to the lyrics because we're used to hear it in nostalgia themed content. Also, the way you explained it was so aggressively funny. Now I can't unhear the atheist meaning.
Thanks, now i won’t be able to listen to this the same way again, and I’m so glad for that, I often experience this sense of existential dread of my end, but this video seems to be a little comforting in way when the song basically eludes to such themes. Thank you genuinely for explaining this to us idiots.
you’re the kindest person I have EVER met (And tiktok hardly gets ANYTHING right, so it’s not surprising so thank you for explaining this song. And I love the rare occasions! So thank u.)
"It's not a nostalgia song" But if the moments that we have are so meaningless, shouldn't it be us that enjoy all of it before it ends? Isn't _that_ what nostalgia is?
Damn , what a deep and eye opening song , instead of questioning what comes after life ends , spend the time making sure you don’t have regrets when it does end
thank you for explaining this song, i personally just used to listen to it when i was 1-2 years younger and thought what the masses thought it meant till this day. i never really gave or thought about deeper meanings in lyrics till recently, and having someone else do the brainfart is pretty nice. thank you again!!
no cause i went on every single little lyric video of notion and none of them even talked about the 'beliving ancient letters' line, for me its very obvious that its talking about religon, and i dont see why people didnt realize it sooner :
hey,,,, this comment probably won't get anywhere but i hope you know this video saved me, in a way :D ! ! i felt so hopeless and depressed before watching this, and don't get me wrong, those feelings are still there, but now i feel like theres something ahead of me that i can look forward to, like a door that's waiting to be opened, thanks for making this, just wanted to let you know (assuming someone reads this comment ?)
Saying this here hoping other people relate somehow- for awhile ive kinda been struggling with identity. And because of religion it made me think i HAD to belive in some sort of afterlife to find peace. But that made me more stressed, thats when i realized i didnt even belive in it. I kinda saw the idea of heaven and hell as some made up story tale. This song kinda helps me realize its ok to not follow a religion, its ok to think this way. And that i should try to just appreciate life and the good moments as it won't last forever and thats ok.
I thought this song was catchy so i listened to it, and I found out it wasnt nostalgia. But i couldnt think of the explanation. I really needed this, thanks.
"if you could pull the lever to carry on forever" is SO easy to guess omg oh, and thank you for explaining this to the numb skulls of this universe. you did god's work.
In the part where he talks about sunshine, I think it is meant to be taken more literally; the sun won’t always be here, and nor will humans, but right now, there’s a momentary beam of light (the sun) and humans should live every moment that they have.
thats a really genuinely good take. it can also be taken in another way, death. a common motif for death is seeing a (momentary) "beam of light" before you pass. the line had so many different interpretations, its so interesting to me and i love it so much.
Oh my god. I can relate to your feelings about these types of tiktok songs sm 😭 I hate it when people put actually unrelated songs in their tiktok edits or character playlists GUYS. LYRICS EXIST FOR A REASON. One of my favorite things is trying to understand the lyrics of songs I like, and seeing people just completely misunderstand songs is PAINFUL I have a friend who made a playlist for she and her girlfriend, and it had a song about a toxic relationship about it 😅
I always was thinking about the second understanding of lyrics "the right one" (heaven bs stuff). But I think that the song still can be interpreted rightly and used as an nostalgia song, but definetly not by the part about being younger, more so by the "pull the lever, to carry on forever". It actually fits many medias, think about all the tvshows that are loved - they ended, in the right time too. When a show/game is going endlessly then its not appreciated as much as other things (I know you can feel nostalgic over old fortnite, or older seasons of a show, but its still in someway here, and doesnt "hurt" as much as the older series never returning (littlebigplanet, tt lego games, club penguin, whatever). As a non-native english speaker im also shocked by the illiteracy of the englishmen. You can literally hear in the "when i was younger part" that it literally is nothing about nostalgia. It could be literally used as a nostalgia song, and with deeper meaning, but some people are just dumb, and when you really think about it the part that is widely used just doesnt fit, and the fact that theres a part that could fit more - and would give an deeper meaning - is out there in this song, makes me feel something unexplainable. Conclusion: in the end, not even english people give a shit about english songs 😂
as a christian, who loves this song, thank you for explaining it i’ve seen so many “nostalgia” videos with this sound and it always makes me so mad when i see them.
My man, i feel sad knowing the lyrics of this song, but also happy? I am confused cause it sounds like a song that makes you feel like in summer nostalgia, but reading the lyrics is smg different.. tysm for this information ❤
for me this is one of those "i knew this, i just needed to realize i knew this". and to the people who say this song is about nostalgia because of “Oh back when I was younger”, what does the line "I was told by other youngsters, that my end will be torture beneath the Earth" mean to you? like how did you miss that???? *ITS THE SAME LINE*
A reminder that a song isn't just music or just words, the tell a story or explain something meaningful Some of which can even elighten you and make you mote present it the moment
He's talking (very secretly through various secret sound waves) about the declaration of independence and how the world got messed up and corrupted by modern day politics and propagandas and how meaningless life is on a scale of 1/10⅖⅔⅖ and understanding of one's weakness. (This is true and to whoever disagrees I'm gonna make a very special visit at your ho-)
Ok. Can I tell you why I think people are putting it in their nostalgic edits and what not? I think they are doing that because first off; if you take one part of the song, and put it in an edit. If your a random person, and doesn't know the song, there is no context that the song is about this, at all, unless you know it. Another reason is I think people put it in their edits is because the song kind of give of a like 80s nostalgic summer kind of vibe. At least it does to me. But yeah. That's just what I think. No hate here, I love the explanation because it makes sense. But this is just why I think people are putting it in their edits of nostalgic stuff.
the first actual thought I had was "bullies aren't mean, they're just not aware of their actions"... now I think a lot more, and I mean a LOT more, but wisdom comes at the cost of hating everyone that doesn't think like you, so I agree with you despite being a Christian myself btw why can't nostalgia edits have the mourning dove call instead, it's 100x better since it's an animal we almost all remember as kids, seriously, look up "mourning dove call"
I've never looked into this song's lyrics this thoughtfully, even though I listened to it more than hundreds of times. BUT this explanation made me love this song much more than ever
That’s what I’m saying!

It is just another void that will trap people in pleasure and helps develop egoistic traits. Religion was still essential for development of humans and can be a beautiful path but still that is my opinion.

WHO WASN'T GETTING THIS???
A lot of people don't listen to music so they don't listen to the lyrics
also many people just listen to music without paying attention to the meaning of the lyrics because of the beat behind them, i'm guilty of doing this
@@duskyartifex21 Just like Hey Ya 😂
I think it's the beat that makes it nostalgic, not the lyrics. Like how Outkast's Hey Ya is considered upbeat despite being about breaking up - "Y'all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance." The music feels nostalgic and that's what it's used for.
I also thought it was a nostalgia music until I actually LISTENED to the lyrics and thought somethings wrong, thats how I ended up here
i’m proud of you son
Some people dont listen to the lyrics thats how the tiktok edits were made
For my case, I was too stupid to actually listen to the lyrics but now I think after seeing this it just makes it more of a lovable and comforting song for me and SO MANY other people.

And that's why I never played it whenever my parents were around lol. Love the way you explained it in such a beautifully aggressive way
This song is relatable for me.
Pls, rejoice with your savior Jesus, and you will overcome depression.
speaking as an ex catholic atheist who never really bought into it throughout their childhood, just do wha you wanna do in life (dont be crazy though)
Christianity is a loving and accepting life, but so many twist it.
it still has that nostalgia feel to it even if it isn't about it though
even though im a christian, this song and the whole live your life to the fullest part, is great. i do believe we're here to live our lives greatly and take it all in, while also never forgeting and departing from God.

As a Christian myself, I dislike how people in my belief openly talk about the end of the world like it's something to be yearned for (yap alert)
God made this world with a purpose, and yet they treat this life as a means to a greater ends; not an end in itself.
This hits hard, Thank you for explaining it beautifully. My friends didnt know about this.
“ Big instrumental segment, huh? Feeling like an atheist yet? “ is the most subtly aggressive yet accurate description ever given for a song

This guy is literally how i type. EVEN THE ENDING. Dude tysm for explaining it to us. 🗣️🔥
just doin my civil duties 🦅
you know, it does kinda make sense though, the author emphasizes on the limit of life, and just like childhood, it really goes away fast, a temporary paradise
2:05 my interpretation (that fits more neatly within the song as a whole) is that the "sunshine" doesn't refer to happiness in life, but rather as life in whole apart from death, and that "this momentary beam of light" refers to this specific, finite life, so that the line as a whole means you won't live forever, but you can live now
edit: typo
momentary beam of LIGHT not LIFE, interesting interpretation tho

@@eyyub3360HAHAHAHH
1:26 "If you could pull the lever to carry on forever, would your life even matter anymore?"
My intepretation of this line is that if you have the prospect, the promise of living forever and happily in an afterlife or be ressurected to a time of perfection, what would be the point of living here anymore if there's a much better place just waiting for you?
