I love their acting Stottlemeyer really had shaking in his voice on the verge of tears asking his friend to use the braclet knowing how much it meant to Monk.
I love how, in the middle of a life-threatening situation, they are still so intrigued by Monk's "Here's what happened" that they stop trying to rescue themselves and pull up chairs to listen with rapt attention.
Here's what happened : stottlemeyer found they can transmit a message on Digital moving sign "help..... Trapped in vault .... Call 911 " but nobody was outside of the bank but Randy knew the silver man was performing outside of the bank and always watching so he transmitted a message to get help and they were rescued.
Given that they prominently featured that outdoor electronic sign in two separate shots, is it wise to assume that the device behind the locked panel controls it? If so, why on earth would anyone (other than a television screenwriter trying to save Monk) install it in the safe?
I've seen stranger electrical installations. It's possible that the building wasn't always a bank and they repurposed a back room to be the vault. Added some reinforcements to the walls but kept the wiring the same.
Honestly it's easier than it sounds. After 5 minutes your fingers will hurt and even if they all take turns it would still take hours to crack not accounting for dehydration, hunger and fatigue. Using the chair leg to pry the lock or the panel would be better than brute forcing the combination.
The lock has four dials, each dial is numbered 0-9 meaning 10 options per dial. That's 10000 combinations. It takes 1-2 seconds to slide each number and try so it would take maybe 3-6 hours assuming you're very methodical. On the other hand I refuse to believe the captains gun couldn't shoot and break a tiny padlock like that off. Especially if he went for multiple shots. Would actually like to see a mythbusters-style recreation to see if a diamond bracelet can in fact cut through metal like that.
Right before Monk told his friends who the killers were, I knew right away an entire group would be capable of a crime after watching Murder on the Orient Express.
That kind of lock is extremely easy to open in under a minute even for a one-armed blindfolded cripple as long as you know a trick to it. And even if you don't, it would still be easier to brute force the combination (4 symbols would take 2 hours at most) than filing down the handle. Wish they'd use a key based lock instead of a combination one.
I have noticed that Monk is a bit more touchy feely with Natilie then he was when Sharona. But that could be Monk has worked on getting better and agian he really his only like that with the people that he trusts and knows.
If they died, who would have been the most guilty ? Madge who locked up Monk Natalie Leland and Randy by closing the door or the fat guy who turn the oxygene off (3:55) ? And who killed the manager ? We don't know exactly which one of the employees killed him
If by "most guilty" you mean who would get the harsher sentence, it would be the guy who turned off the air. He shuts the air off and claims that it gives them 9 to 10 hours. If anyone dies, he's most likely looking at 1st degree murder and will be sentenced to life in prison or the death sentence. The person locking them in could be charged false imprisonment on top of all the other charges. This is all on top of the federal bank robbing and other stuff.
I agree that turning off the air would make the guy the most guilty. Although, all of them would likely be tried for murder to at least some extent. It would depend on the jurisdiction, as well as the prosecutor.
I was wondering if there wouldn't be such a mechanism. I remember working in a restaurant 50 years ago and there was simple, obvious safety mechanism for getting OUT of the walk-in freezer. (Though if someone padlocked it shut, I don't think that mechanism would have helped.)
i don't know if it would work but that lock is a 4-number lock, since they gonna be locked for 9-10 hours couldn't they have tried all the combinations without trying to cut the lock. the code is between 0000-9999, so it is possible but time-consuming.
@@fippydarkpaw1479 30 minutes is a stretch; that's 5.6 combinations per second! But yeah, they could have managed it in 3 hours if they kept up a steady pace of a little over one per second.

There would be 10,000 different combinations. If you could move your fingers fast enough and get one combo per second, it would take over 2.7 hours. So as long as you can try each combo once every 4 seconds, you're good lol.
@@cir0plus Again, try it yourself. Try going through every one of those combinations for almost 3 hours, without making a single mistake, in an uncomfortable possition that you can't change (because the lock is attached to the wall), in an enviroment that keeps getting more hot and humid and hard to breathe in. See how well you do.
@@beterbomen I love how you have no actual counterargument, just your original position with more words. It's not that hard for people to just count, even when they're tired. Three hours is not a great deal of time, especially when they can work in shifts.

At this point it was a coping mechanism because they thought they were gonna die.
Here's what happened : stottlemeyer found they can transmit a message on Digital moving sign "help..... Trapped in vault .... At least Monk barely argued with Stottlemeyer about using Trudy’s bracelet.😢 Them being locked in a vault would certainly be a terrible way to go.😥
It’s astonishing how quickly Randy’s animosity with the “living statue” came into being.

There's no way a bracelet would have the tensile strength to be used as a saw to cut through a lock. The band would snap.

There is another guy like him that used locks to break open locks. To be fair it survived a bullet thing was clearly well made.
I couldn't get past the cheap hinge it was mounted on, a couple of blows with a hand gun would have broken it

How'd they lock them in the vault? Vaults have a lever on the inside to prevent people from being locked in.
It wouldn't be Hollywood if there was a lever inside the vault to open it I guess...🤷♂

California works a bit differently. Levers to let people out are installed in prison cells, but never in bank vaults.
Also why would you rob a bank and then say you’re not going to spend any of the money you took? That’s stupid.

Why not shoot the "horse and staple" instead of the lock?
You might hit what you are trying to get at.
Why would you try to cut through a simple number lock? You can bruteforce that in 30 minutes.
Can anyone with experience with vaults tell me, do they really not have a lock wheel on the inside?
They contain an elaborate puzzle on the inside, exactly like in an escape room.
How did they manage to survive?
They changed the message on the marquee outside of the building and a guy outside saw it.
Randy was beefing with a human statue earlier in the episode, and he used the electronic sign to make the guy call 911.

@ZukoHalliwell, I figured it out. 😳
combination locks like that are not that secure. pull on the lock turn the reel till you hear clicks and repeat on the others
Wheres the 2nd half? I need to see how they got out
So if that didn't get them out, how did they make it out?
After watching LPL for so many years I could get that open in no time flat XD its too bad there was nothing of worth in it though
As far as I remember, there was something worth behind it - the controls for the electronic sign outside that they then used to alert people.
