What you play at 5:10 is so beautiful, I had to listen to again. Thanks for all of your incredible videos.
Great review, demo, and comparison to the original gear! Can’t wait to see your coverage of NAMM. :)
Outstanding Work! I am amazed at how close to the original the XM sounds. Thank you for all your hard work in making these videos.
Thanks Paulo. Nice comparison. Always appreciate your videos.
You did a super job. Great work!! Also very kind of you to do all this!
Great review as usual Paolo. Thank you!
Great review, Paolo. The comparisons are very impressive.
Paolo, you are the best guy to review this synth as you have both a studio full of vintage gear for comparison and the playing skill to demo them nicely. zZounds made a good choice in sending you the unit for review.
If I could own a Linn Drum, Juno-60 and Jupiter 8. I would build a home underground and humanity would never see me again.
Amen man! I'd prefer a TR 808 and a TB 303 though instead of a Linn
@@patricklaureys9238 Bang them on as well.
Lol 🤭 best comment I've read today!
And add system 8 to that?
mimoocho dom right? And then hopefully we make it. 🤣
Super informative review and comparisons. Thank you!
Thanks for getting classic kit out and doing the side by side. Worthwhile.
brilliant video - thanks for doing this. You helped tip me over the edge for buying.
Great demo Paulo, yet again your musicality really sells the instrument. I love the way you are not snobbish about the virtual analogue vs the original, especially when, as you said,it would be practically impossible to distinguish in a mix
I agree about the 'virtual vs analog' sentiment! Of course there are purists who will beg to differ, but in reality, I don't think the average listener, fellow keyboard musician, or engineer would give the remotest f*%k about if it's pure analog or digital.. At the end of the day, if it sounds good and gets the job done that's all that matters. And after seeing/hearing various demos online, I think the new Jupiter series with its Zen Core technology sounds fantastic!
My favourite "analogue" synth is my humble Yamaha Reface CS. Sounds great and it is extremely quick to dial-in sounds. Because of its speed (and its mojo) it doesn't impede the creative process so I use it a lot when I'm composing or doing a rough demo even if ultimately I plan on replacing the sound with a synth that's slower to program. Also waaay quicker and less impeding than scrolling through presets.
That was a most informative video, thanks. I have a JP-X on order and it should arrive next week. I have owned a Juno 60 (not a 106) and JX-8P and played a JP-8 and SH-101 in a distant past known as the 80s so it's going to be a trip down memory lane for me!
Glad it was helpful!
best JUPITER Xm demo yet - great job!!!
Grazie e bravo ancora!!!!!
Grazie di cuore, Bruno!
Thanks for the review! I love all the new inexpensive "remakes" lately. It's a cool time for synth hardware.
inexpensive?
$1500 US for a 37 minikey toy?
I` am a Roland Fan since years. Thank you very much for this video and comparison. With this, I made my decision to buy the Jupiter XM...
,,
A very good demo and comparison too, I especially liked the RD 700 GX piano sounds and the jazz guitar emulation at the end, however I was surprised in that you never once mentioned that the SH101 in the new XM is now polyphonic as opposed to the original SH101 only being monophonic, It's a wonderful little synth with a lot of power and I can't wait to get my hands on one
Glen :-)
I have to say I'm very impressed with the Xm’s emulation of the Jupiter 8 specifically. Yes it's usually brighter, but it's amazing how this little digital synth can replicate the sound of an analog so faithfully. It's truly a technical achievement.
I just bought the Xm from Zzounds because of this review!
Thanks for sharing!
Finally a comparison of the Xm with the RealThing(tm). Great video!
Thanks a lot for the useful comparison with the original units.
Excellent video Paolo! this is the kind of video that helps when somebody is looking for new old sounds.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the demo. From this demo, and from the Jupiter-80 Synth Legends video Roland put out years ago, Zen Core delivers far better emulations of Roland's classic analog than their previous technology SuperNatural Synth could. If I ever got to the point where I was gigging, I'd buy this for live use so I could leave Jupiter-8 safe at home.
Thank you for taking the time to haul out these synths and make these comparisons for nerds like us. We don't deserve you.
My pleasure!
Excellent video, as usual dear Paolo!!! Thanks so much.
Thank you and glad you liked it, Gus!
Fantastic demo thank you for this!
Thanks for patiently explaining and comparing.
Thanks for doing this. Interesting how the reverb on the XV sounds so much better.
The XV-5080 hardware, and even the software version for the computer, also has 10 different 'structures' which change the patching of how the tong generator filter and amp are routed, can add ring mod, booster etc. The Xm doesn't have anything directly comparable although it can do some things like ring mod. So XV on the Xm can't sound the same, for many presets. But with regard to reverb maybe they chose less by default on Xm - by default each and every single patch on the XV sounds amazing but if you recorded them as audio and layered, it gets muddy quickly. On a real XV you really need to turn off reverb, and add it later to the finished track or in the mixing stage.
Nice review and comparison.
People need to understand that no 2 analogue synths sound the same, especially with age. Roland may have modelled off a Jupiter 8 that does sound the same.
Still amazing content. One of the most useful pieces of content on this synth by just putting it side by side and letting it sound... Of course, most people won't have the whole range like you do which makes this even better :D
Thanks Paulo! They both sound great. Might get an XM for my stage rig coz of the multitimbral possibilities. Lookin fwd to NAMM vids. 👍
Great review. Tried it at NAMM, but this comparison is what I needed.. sold!
Glad it was helpful!
It gets close enough for me, ended up getting one, it'll be a nice companion to my MPC and various other synths.
Nice review! I have an Jupiter Xm and the vocoder is impressive
Superb demo! Unlike so many "synth demo" videos you don't just hold down one key or a chord and endlessly twist knobs ruining a nice factory patch in doing so. You actually play nice music. One thing though...instead of matching the original Jupiter-8 to the Xm you should edit the Xm's patches to match the Jupiter-8.
This was a great review.
Very nice review 👍
really informative video , thank you
Wow! This excellent! Almost dead on! Thanks for this review!!!
Very welcome!
Nice video! In the upper registers it sounds very similar I must admit but there is that little magic dust the old models have in the lower registers that seems impossible to replicate.
Very nice demo. Thank you ! I like it!
Thanks!
great video, finally a comparison! shame Roland wernt brave enough to do an A / B comparison, would have sold a lot better if they showed people how close it was to what they wanted: the original
I was sold on the ACB technology with the system 1 when I had it. you can get that with 4 note poly and no access to the whole x library but for just the best virtual analog it's pretty stellar. Just wished they had made the filter knob bigger as it was pretty sensitive. I'd say Roland have in sense shut the mouth of or drop the jaws of those who say analog can't be digitally done to beat it. And I love my analogue synths.
The XM sounds really good. I wish Roland had spent an extra 30 min like you to match up the tones with the original. We all don’t have a JP8 to compare to🤔.
Not hunting ghosts of the past, are we?
With another JP8, the sound could have been a bit different!
@@pcuimac Why not?
This is a super awesome video thank you so much for doing this.you made me totally want to get the Jupiter X when it comes out.it's funny to know that you inspired me to get all those original synthesizers and now we have one that does them all in one.I think it sounds very darn close and I'm very happy to see it sounds so awesome. Take care Sam.
Great demo!
Tried that baby at a music store in my hometown until my seven year old daughter showed up&it was hard to get her away from that awesome machine...already a legend!
Wow! This excellent! Now we can have the XP50 back again!
This is absolutely the best Virtual Analog synth Roland has ever released!! They did a great job, and made smart decisions. No synth company can clone these Roland synths better than what’s been presented here by Roland. That being proclaimed, creating my own patches with the Zen Core is a more interesting prospect that dwelling in the past.
Good video Paolo - you are the only person on Earth who can make a guitar patch sound anything like a guitar!
Interesting to hear the comparison with the Jupiter. I suspect the differences mostly depend on which individual Jupiter unit they were working from. However, instead of the presets I'm interested in how it compares to the Jupiter for programming original patches - isn't that why it has all those knobs? With only a handful of exceptions I program my own sounds rather than use presets (especially for FM).
Have you ever used the Boutique JP-08? I've not been impressed with mine. I don't mind the tiny faders or the voice limit but for creating original patches I find it sounds more like it's going through a "Jupiter filter" than sounding intrinsically Jupiter if you get my meaning. That made me reticent to buy the other Boutique models that I had been interested in and frankly makes me hesitant to put the Xm on my wishlist without getting to borrow one first.
That is a thing of beauty!!!
From my point of view this is the best comparison between the Roland Monsters.... Thanks again for this ; -)
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
One of these in module/desktop format at half the price would be nice.
thanks brother for this comparison
I'm so getting the Jupiter X. I'm excited. :) Thanks for the video Paolo. Thank you for giving me the GAS for it. Take care, Sam.
I've been waiting for the right time to grab this. Wanna grab this, the MPC Live 2 and the new SH-4D. This would be more for preset stuff while the SH-4D would be more for tweaking as it has more controls.
great sounds, all-in-one!
like that demo very much - thanks!
Glad you like it!
When I saw this keyboard you were the first person I thought about!
Nice synth and review. The soundstage on the XV-5080 sounds wider and more 3D. Sounds like it has slightly more reverb. If I didn't already have the JD-Xa I'd be tempted.
This is amazing! Some people will only hate no matter what. But if you don't want to buy a vintage Roland, now no one will know, except in person! Bravo, Roland, and thanks for the wonderful comparisons SM!
I agree, the emulation is so good now. I sold my MKS80 a few months ago and will use the money towards the Jupiter X. After playing the Jupiter X, I have no regrets selling the MKS80.
@@anoniconoclast2030 Ok then why are most of us hearing pretty much very close comparisons here ,Do you have special hearing?
@@anoniconoclast2030 Look I get fatigue on playing anything for a long time I get this when I play my Analog Prophet 08 ,even though I love the sounds it can make so I won't accept your argument sorry.
@@anoniconoclast2030 But think about what you're saying it would be so hard for even seasoned Keys players to notice the difference look at for example SynthMania
he has been playing for years and has all those old Roland synths and what did he say in the video?
@@anoniconoclast2030 The Rev 2 is essentially the same synth engine so you'd get the same level of fatigue on either
Released in 2000 and XV-5080 is still the king!
A fantom X from a couple of years later has the same engine but nicer display for easier editing and easier sampling editing, sequencing, RPS phrases. Worth a look if you have room for the keyboard instead.
wow I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THAT COMPANY THANK YOU
damn nice vid, thanks, though I would have liked if you explored more of whatever zen-core sounds it has that sound different from the emulated/vintage patches, but that's no biggie
It is not my cup of tea to be honest. But I enjoyed your review. One of the best I’ve ever seen to be honest. Your ability to compare is above all. I’m curious about the tech behind the synth engine. I’m also curious about a bigger version as I am not big into small keyboard. Rack it or big keyboard I say
Thanks for the review, xm sounds nice. I can never deal with those slim keys thought. Every synth I buy with small keys ends up getting sold on Reverb.
Waw! Both the synth and the demo!
Nice job! Have fun at NAMM!
14:50 reminds me of Sweet Sensation. Xm is very close but that low mid presence on the hardware just brings out a lot more emotion. Feel like I'm back in a club in the 90s.
If one had two or three original Jupiter-8's side-by-side and compared the factory patches I wonder if they would sound exactly the same from one to the next or if there would be slight differences.
If my 1080 ever broke down I would def buy this. seems like the natural upgrade
Its not going to break down though is it? They are built like a tank.
@@maccagrabme no i hope not..its 20 years old
I fell in love with Big Ballad. You should so make something from that
Do the models actually have models of the original chorus as well like the 106 chorus? I cant seem to find any info on this. It seems like it just has it's own chorus effect send for each part. The manual online says it has 4 different choruses but doesn't give any info as to what they are. If this includes the 106 chorus with the modeled chorus noise then I'm definitely getting it. The ju06a has this feature but the 4 note polyphony is really keeping me from buying it.
To me in some patches the analogs sound a bit more defined, the Xm a bit harsher. But in this video, to me the Xm sounds better than in all other demos I heard. In all those other vids it sounds like it was recorded too loud, pushing the UA-cam compression into distortion.
Càn you please tell me what model the Awakening patch uses? I'm curious.
this guy is so lucky. he has EVERYTHING omgosh
It's crazy: for years I thought it was Z-Z Sounds. LMBO!
hahaha me too! Must be the Mandela effect! 😳
@@11miura lol. Or, and this is a big or, we just don't pay attention! 😆
jesus that sweet sound of jupitor 8 is magical.
what's the best way to connect this to an interface or mixer? it's got balanced xlr outputs and another output as well
Great if you want to use presets, but is it as easy to edit as the old units?
Great sound! Yeahh!) Coul'd you tell me please, how it sounds in mix of instruments in live group or live concert?
How those the Roland Jupiter Xm virtual model engine compares with Roland System 8, I’m confused 🤷♂️
Wish I knew 1/100th of stuff this guys does! 👏👏👏
Nice review! Have you ever tried turning up the aging parameter in the Xm? Maybe that's the key to get the sound even closer. I have the Jupiter X and I love it, but I don't have any J-8/J-10ing6 to compare it. It would be awesome if you can update a review trying the age parameter and see what that parameter exactly does. For me it sounds that the pitch is affected mostly, but maybe there's more when you compare it with an original 40 years old synth, like the brightness of the sounds :)
Thanks! I had to give the Xm back but plan to get the X at some point, and will dig in on the parameters deeper, including the aging parameter
@@SynthManiaDotCom Cool! thanks! :D
Thanks for sharing Brill synth
Could you maybe find a way to review the new korg wavestate?
Thank u very much for this video 🔝
No problem 👍
Love your music.
wish i couldve seen this interview before i bought it hahah i love this thing
@Shawn have you tried programming sounds? If so what are your thoughts?
@@iqi616 I havent really its alot to learn really and i've never been that good at sound design tbh but i can see it in the future..
Somehow the lows on your Jupiter-8 just have that extra grit compared to the Xm. Could you also get the Xm closer to the 8 instead of the other way around?
I know it's probably an odd question, I'm not even sure if you will see this message but I'd like to ask about the name of the song you played as a demo for Piano I patch on Juno 106. It was such a beatiful song! I am a beginning keyboard player and I would love to learn to play that.
I just did a deep dive on this last night and I love it (I am nowhere good at synth) and once you spend a day with it it is very simple.
Sure, there are some stuff I want to change and probably can if exploring it further.
Beats and arps are controllable when used but I need to explore more on the beats when playing....Alot more knob tweaking can be done on quite a few presets then I thought and enjoying the hell out of it.
Menu diving was pretty simple if you are just doing the presets....I am not that advance to sound design from scratch,so thats not a huge issue for me....yet!
I need to look more into what the shift button is for...but, overall, it is superb!
@Rhizosphere Like I said,doing presets was simple.
@Rhizosphere Hope to do more deep, deep dive into it....presets are pretty amazing to me....I got the X also...they are phenomenal...it would take me a life time to understand their full potential....My retirement plan if the world is still functioning by that time.
Nice one mate,
I have the XM. my only 'Gripe' ( Gripe is a word used instead of complaint) with it is.. This is my opinion ...When I am in the studio and time is restricted, when I am looking for a sound, there is so much menu diving.!!
What I mean by this is :- If you have ample time to spend just playing with sounds, but in my case ,I haven't .
It would be ideal in having a folder immediately for your 'OWN SOUND ,OR FAVOURITES" This would be ideal. None the less , its worth having in the set up for now.
Hi, Laurie, I no longer have the Xm in the studio but you can save your own "scenes" and "tones" in the unit's User Bank - these two videos have good information on those features: ua-cam.com/video/9bmvJFXsbgU/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/atgv4C-mnTE/v-deo.html
@@SynthManiaDotCom Fantastic👍 I will give that go.Many thanks for letting me know.
Can you do a art of noise style video with the fairlight CMI
Nice Demo. How does it compare to the Jupiter-80?
Thanks.
Can you do a more in depth video on the I-Arpeggio?
Thank you for this comparison. The analogue stuff was super close! I prefer the XV 5080 sounds to the XM sample sound though. It could be the reverb? The real XV sounded more rich and wider to me.
Doesn't the 5080 even have these 3-D-Effects? In that case I'm not sure wether those have migrated to the xm too. That might be a reason then
It’s 100% down to the reverb imho
Thanks for the demo's. I brought one a few weeks ago and love it.
@Mr Taylor. Have you tried programming sounds on it? If so, what are your thoughts?
@@iqi616 It's a bit of a fiddle with the small screen. Loads of menu options to dive into, but with patience it's capable of making great patches. The iArpeggio is great fun. I love the classic Roland synth sound, so this synth works for me perfectly. Am I glad I purchased it....Yes. Would love Roland to make a PC GUI interface for it though.
@@btaylo24 Thanks. It appears they have a better modeling engine in it than the Boutique JP-08 (which sounds like it has some kind of generic modeling engine run through a "Jupiter filter" instead of an actual model of the Jupiter and the further I get away from the presets the harder it is to make the patch work).
