Saladin vs. Baldwin IV the Leper: The Battle for Jerusalem - DOCUMENTARY

- The film Kingdom of Heaven made Saladin and Baldwin the Leper King famous to the moviegoing public. But what's the true history behind the movie? We'll find out today! In 1176, Baldwin IV, the Leper King of Jerusalem, turned fifteen, and fully assumed power as king. His first act was to launch a military campaign against his powerful neighbor, Saladin, who ruled the vast Ayyubid Empire stretching from Egypt to Syria. The timing wasn't good for Saladin, who wanted to focus on reducing his Zengid rivals in Syria. Baldwin's ascension forced Saladin to focus on the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Both of these great rulers would meet in combat in 1177 at the Battle of Montigsard, one of the greatest clashes of the Crusades. Here, Baldwin the Leper King was assisted by the Knights Templar, and Raynald of Chatillon. The crusader forces were vastly outnumbered, but they were determined. This wouldn't be the last time Saladin and Baldwin would meet. in 1179, while the Templars were attempting to raise a castle at Jacob's Ford, the Sultan and the Leper would exchange blows again at the Battle of Marj Ayun. In this documentary, we continue looking at the life of Baldwin IV, the Leper King of Jerusalem.

Saladin and Baldwin the IV, both of them were example of strong Leaders of their armies of opposing sides with different Leadership styles but effective.
The young King Baldwin dealt well with what could have been seen as disrespect from Count Phillip, even bolstering Phillips army for him after being turned down.. Wise beyond his years.

I'm impressed that you guys manage to not discuss the topic
The fact that 80 Templars was enough to give Baldwin confidence against a minium of 14000 men, really shows how skilled and revered the Templars were. The best soldiers to ever step foot on the battlefield, completely without contest.
Great video!!! The animation and narration were top notch. Loved the history lesson!

When Baldwin IV was 15, an early victory was the Battle of Baccar (Bekaa.) He likely cut his battle teeth at Baccar.
Salauddin One of the greatest millitary general the world had ever known versus a young leper king who barely was capable walking on his own..what an interesting history
Greatest military generals? He lost almost all battles against the Crusaders and his main victory at Hattin was due to King Guy de Lusignan's incompetence far more than Saladin's abilities. Salah-al-Din was a terrible general.

The Templars must have been almost mythical figures of their time. Excellent for morale just to have a group of them fighting alongside your army.
In fact they were very mistrust by all the different powerhouse.
We are talking about a time were regular permanent army doesn't exist. In peace time, a lord doesn't have any army except security forces and his knights. They all used mercenary, and with different alliances manage to form real army.
While in the same time, different order like templar or hospitaliers developp themself with permanent army, sometimes more powerful than the local forces. That's exactly what happened in france, with the decision of french king to accuse them of heretism and burn them all. They could have represented a real treat for our feodal world conception.
@@gringologie9302 Even though they still have military in their title, the knights of St John, demilitarizing shortly after the Crusades is what probably saved them from a Templars fate.

Baldwin IV's tenacity in protecting the Kingdom is amazing. He successfully battled Saladin to protect the Kingdom against a foe that had overwhelming resources.
To think he almost caused saldin’s death with that brilliant ambush
Overwhelming resources lol every vanquished has the same narrative to turn the loss into a victory I guess

that was a very cool history lesson. The Kingdom of Heaven is one of my favorite movies and I was surprised to learn that most of the characters were real ppl.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it.
Didn't the movie put a different spin on all this? I thought the movie portrayed Baldwin and Saladin as sort of as enemies but very respectful of each other. It was the Templars that they portrayed as the bad guys and war like and the ones who broke the uneasy peace between the Muslims and the Christians . From what I can remember.
Yes, the movie is devoid of any legitimate historical content. It's essentially a fantasy using the names of real historical figures. There's no evidence that Baldwin IV and Saladin had sort of a "respectful" relationship, only that they fought each other fiercely for years. Also, everybody was raiding, not just the Templars and Raynald of Chatillon. Raids on villages and farmlands were a reality in medieval warfare, and Saladin did this just as often as anyone else.
@@RealCrusadesHistory READ WHAT THE CATHOLIC SCRIBES WROTE HEATHEN,UR SUCH A LOSER.
@@Maniac5000 Don't feel like you can't watch it ever again, man. I wasn't a huge fan of the film initially, then came to respect it as a work of art. I am sure there is some visual/mood/setting accuracy in there, even if experts rarely give it credit. It had some profound beauty in it; in particular I was captivated by the Knight Hospitaller, as there are many clues that he was not in fact there at all but rather an angel or an idea.
An excellent part 2. If I may nit pick a small bit: The loss of Le Chastellet (Jacob´s Ford), wasn´t really that big of a reverse for Baldwin IV. Yes, the grand castle was destroyed, and therefore couldn´t do what it was intended to do, but its loss only really reestablished the status quo, and didn´t result in the loss of any territory. And, as you mentioned, the outbreak of an epidemic meant that Saladin couldn´t really take advantage of his victory. Again, that was nit picking. Great video, and looking forward to part 3.
Some argue the loss of Chastelet, a barely operational fortress (William of Tyre incorrectly stated it was finished) was a precursor to Hattin. Chastelet was located at a gateway to the East.
@@deem7478 I can see why they would argue that. It wasn´t far away from the Horns of Hattin either. That said, the next few years did nothing to suggest that the kingdom faced an inevitable defeat. Le Chastellet proved to be Saladin´s last major victory over King Baldwin IV.
Really a quality production, thanks a lot for sharing it!

saladin was one of the greatest commanders in the history and to think baldwin was able to defeat him at 16 with lepresy is crazy
Salahuddin was indeed very wise man and man of honour
Bro literally assaulted the peaceful Jerusalem for no reason that isn't honour
@@basedondeez6986 there’s history
He left his army behind and fled on a camel in the face of defeat. He also pillaged, killed, and enslaved the people of Jerusalem. No honour there.
I think it's funny when Christians pillage and burn it's called barbaric, but when Muslims do it they get called great and honorable. Salahuddin couldn't even beat anyone his own level as a Commander. He lost to the Lepar King and ran and tried Fighting the Lionheart and ran. Richard even beat him with less soldiers. So Salahuddin wasn't really that great and honorable. He gets way overrated if we compare him to his counter parts he wasn't really all that good of a Commander.

Lovely video. Baldwin IV was clearly a very strategic minded fellow battling and hindering Saladin as much as possible to mitigate his attacks. That Raymond III was passed over was clearly a huge blow. Perhaps not as bellicose or strategic he clearly knew what he was doing unlike Guy of Lousinon. Paul Magdilino has argued that Manuel I's invasion of Anatolia against Iconium was part of this Christian conflict to thwart the surround Islamic powers.
