Here’s a question for you to think about.
Not one you ask of yourself.
Let’s go deeper.
One day, your grandkids will ask you the question,
Yo Granddad (or Grandma), what did you as a young person?
What did you do with your life?
What did you do when things got tough?
What did you do in the bull market? Bear market?
What did you do when things went wrong?
What did you do when it got tough out there in the cold world that we live in?
What did you do when you failed?
How did you go about living?
What will you tell them?
What would you want to tell them?
The truth is, it isn’t what you say that will be impressive.
The only impression you can have rub off on to them is with what you would have done in your life.
It’s the legacy you would have built.
It’s the history, of your actions (not your talk), that will remain long after you’re gone.
And if this encounter isn’t face to face, then all your grandkids will know, is who you were, through the actions you’ve taken.
If your grandkids ask you the question or want to learn about their grandparent, what will they find?
What would your life teach them?
That you gave up when things got hard?
That you got depressed when things went wrong?
That you felt sorry for yourself because no one believed in you?
That you sat on your thumbs and waited for things to happen?
Will that be the life lessons you want to pass on to your grandkids to learn?
Or will they learn from you, their heroic grandparent, the trait of tenacity.
To hang in when things get tough.
And by golly, they will.
Will they learn that when things don’t work out, it isn’t a sign to give up, but a sign for them to get better and try again.
To change their approach
To be resilient.
To believe in themselves when no one else does. To believe in themselves, no matter what.
To hold their own.
To stand tall.
To make a positive difference in the life of others.
Ponder this question
What would be the lessons you would teach them through your life? Even, long after, you’re gone.
What will you tell your grandkids?
Because, one day, they will ask.
