Hi, my name is Jen I am 44 and live in Connecticut with my husband and 8 year old son. I am a stay-at-home Mom and full-time UA-camr with a degree in business with a focus in marketing. Before leaving work when my son was born, I was a commercial lender at a bank. I also worked at Sephora and Macy's doing visual merchandising.
I have dry skin with some hyperpigmentation and fine lines. I love natural makeup looks but occasionally go outside my comfort zone a little bit. On my channel you'll find lots of videos about drugstore makeup and drugstore dupes (those are my favorites to film!) but I also review high-end makeup as well. To me it’s just way too much shock and awe with people - “OH MY GOSH!” “DID YOU SEE THAT?!” “YOU NEED THIS!” “WALK DON’T RUN!” Etc. Etc. Etc. Without giving any actual details on why they think it’s so amazing and why I need it. And most of the time they don’t show swatches. And when they do they’re usually useless (too quick, or don’t show them well, etc.). So I just can’t be bothered with TikTok 😅

I have to admit there are many beauty content creator videos that I used to enjoy watching that I scroll pass because there are less make-up tutorials and skin care education and more pushing the latest products. I feel bombarded and overwhelmed by all these "You need to have this in your life," videos and influencers who change their holy grails on a monthly basis, I'm grateful for your channel, as I feel you are more interested in helping us make smart decisions about new products and demonstrating make-up applications. Thank you for your videos!

I wonder if that is because so other creators overuse “dupe” and wearied or confused. Perhaps you could have a battle between the same types of new high and low cosmetics or your older ones. I find myself watching those at times. I am interested in budget options for hair, beauty and skin, but I want value for my budget. Outside of beauty, I watch some historical cooking, knitting, and random history. And the pretty nature scenes with music or rain to rest my brain

I tend not to put too much effort into watching dupe videos because 1) everyone uses that term and 2) there are rarely any dupes in color, quality, wearability. Alter Ego is okay, but eh…
Jen, I know of at least 3 BeautyTubers who reached 100k subs a year before you, but since then, they've only gained less than 20k more, while you've zoomed by and are already past 200k!! I say this not to bring them down, but to point out how much your content has resonated with viewers lately. Simply put, we think you're great! :)

I just wanted to take a moment to let you know that I was a big fan of your “No Buy July” series… it strongly resonated with me and was just what I needed to examine my shopping habits (not just makeup) and our consumerism focused/FOMO culture. I’m sorry to hear that it “wasn’t successful” as far as analytics go, but it made a positive impact on me on a personal level that has carried on well past the month of July.
Loved it too, I do not like the pressure to buy more and more or just expensive make up...this video shows that the difference in brand is not that important, I like advice on how to look nice but not over the top and for sure not feel pressure to buy for the sake of buying.

I was also a big fan of no buy July and I felt guilty not being able to watch and "like" in the first hour because I was traveling most of the month. Anyway, I'm sad to hear it wasn't popular.

First of all, I never went over to TikTok because of the Chinese ownership and because, as you said, the content seems too much like a sales pitch.
I like your channel because you showcase products without shoving them down our throats. You give honest reviews combined with a relaxed tutorial. And, I like your style of presenting. You are very well-spoken without the vocal fry and over-the-top reactions of other creators.

I don't want to have Tik Tok on my phone because of the Chinese ownership. Although I doubt that the Chinese government has any interest in me; I'm the most boring person in the world.

I used to have maybe 5-6 beauty content providers that I watched all the time, including you. I have narrowed that down to two, you and one other. I will intentionally look for someone doing a video that is related to either a product that I am thinking of purchasing or one that I have purchased and am having difficulty using. I appreciate your videos so much and I'm glad you're here. So far, your content always shows up when I come to UA-cam. I have not been on TikTok at all. I do not care to be sold to and love videos that demonstrate the true use and honest review of a product. BTW, I am 76 and still love makeup.

I'm 62, I love makeup, finding what works for my ever changing aging skin is a challenge. I watch more mature content creators, not so much the under 30s because what works for them often doesn't, for me. I enjoy your dupe videos, your haul videos, your advent calendar is genius. I really appreciate your honest reviews and look forward to your content. I understand you need to do what keeps your channel growing, you have to play along with UA-cams game so you can continue. I'm an unpredictable viewer. I try to avoid consuming too much content from everyone!! I absolutely don't want to be sold anything at this point. I also consume more "shop my stash" and "project pan" videos now. I absolutely hate "hauls" because I don't think anyone needs to have a collection of that size. Again, I'm trying to be a conscientious human while thinking about using what I have. Love watching you. ❤

My husband just bought me the ND My Dream palette as an early birthday gift during the black Friday sale. I've never tried anything from Alter Ego. The matte shades were definitely spot on. I'm glad that you aren't leaving, I prefer longer content. I rarely see anyone I follow on my homepage, I just go to my subscriptions. They are trying to be like TT and push the shorter content but I'm old and enjoy watching longer videos and getting to know the creators I follow instead of watching multiple random short videos. I can't imagine the pressure of having my income dependent on algorithms and the attention span of strangers. I love the look you created. I'm definitely going to look into Alter Ego shadows. I don’t pay attention to my home page. I watch UA-cam all the time and always have a video paused in the background when I am not able to watch, so I only check my subscription feed. Do not ever rely on your home page to give you decent recommendations. This is why I rarely look at my home page. When the app updates and it refreshes, I immediately go to my subscription feed, even though it opens on the home feed.

I will never open Chyna TT. I despise how UA-cam treats creators! I’ve loved your channel since I found it. I watch makeup, hauls, history, travel, politics and random how to videos. I replaced tv with UA-cam!

I have learned so much watching your channel (I’m a fairly new subscriber). I love the way you do an honest comparison with drugstore and high end products. I love that you give honest feedback, without harsh and unkind comments. In today’s video, I love how you applied the layers of eyeshadow to achieve a beautiful everyday look that I am inspired to try! You’ve given me confidence at age 58 to branch outside of my makeup comfort zone, and it has been life altering (yes, makeup can be life altering 😊). One last thing, I absolutely loved going through your makeup stash with you in videos a few weeks ago. It was so fun to see what you have collected and why to keep or not keep the item.

I’m usually a luxury/prestige makeup person, but I found your channel around a year ago and I love your content! There’s only a couple of UA-camrs that I always watch, you are one of them and the other is a luxury brand reviewer. You’ve taken me out of my comfort zone and I’ve tried drugstore brands that you’ve reviewed. Some I’ve actually loved more than my most expensive brands. I find your voice to be very soothing. I tend to click on your videos first. It usually is the description that catches my eye first. Then I look at the pics of products to see if they are ones that I use. I think your reviews are honest. I don’t want to waste my money on products that are not good. I’m not a huge fan of the hauls only videos, that’s just my opinion. And that’s across the board for numerous you tubers. Overall, I think what you do on your channel is awesome and I thank you for putting out content the way you do!

You're my favorite beauty youtuber because of how authentic and real you are. Like I've seen others express, I can't tell you how much I appreciate you being honest and actually helping us figure out what products are worth it, rather than going on about how amazing every new thing is. I also love that you don't do paid partnerships. I'll watch whatever you put out honestly..you are my favorite UA-camr I'm just drawn to your demeanor, content and the fact that you truly seem to like makeup for makeup sake and don't have any other agendas. So many other UA-camrs struggle to be wanting to do UA-cam anymore and it makes it awkward to watch like they don't really want to be doing it. It's not fun to watch if you feel like their heart isn't in it. Personally I do love the Sunday hauls and k beauty or products that others dont do. I hate when it's very obvious a product is being pushed and all the sudden there's like 30 videos on that product
I think the effort you put into your channel really shows. You come up with fantastic ideas for videos and I really appreciate you showing a variety of products (k-beauty, drugstore and high end) plus I really appreciate the "opinion/commentary" videos, the comparisons, and your honest reviews and perspectives on the beauty community/industry. I really appreciate that you try things and don't just do what everyone else is doing (or you at least always put your spin on things).
I’ve followed a few youtube “influencers” and over last year I’ve canceled my subscription to their account because I don’t see anything new! I’ve learned what I needed from them and it’s like taking a course! Once you’ve learned something you need to move on! Especially since now they’re trying to sell a brand or skincare etc! These people are young and honestly they shouldn’t talk about skincare cause they have beautiful young skin! Your videos, on the other hand, are about 1. Drugstore brands 2. Their quality 3. Other topics such as reusing what we have, no buy July etc. So I’ve not only enjoyed watching your videos but also learn about quality of drugstore brands! Anyone can go and shop Chanel or Dior but it’s difficult to shop Cover Girl or Maybeline cause I can’t try them before buying! 🙏👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I think many (not all) young people gravitate towards short form videos. They grew up with technology and want everything fast and quick. I love that you do both types.

I always tune in for your videos. I prefer videos over shorts. I am not much for this “TikTok” style of content. I know it has its appeal for many. What I’m watching most are longer videos. I want to see 40 minute+ videos in my subscriptions, because I have them on while I do other things. I'm glad your not quitting because I really enjoy your videos especially the more experimental ones. You have come up with some fabulous ideas in the last few months and I really appreciate your creativity! After 15 years on UA-cam I decided to try TikTok instead and I enjoy a lot more than I did UA-cam. I've got over 7,000 subscribers on UA-cam but I should have WAY more than that after so many years of hard work. So I'm trying to grow my audience over there instead and have stepped back from UA-cam. I can't do both because.... it would take too long to explain. I think I know what has held me back and it's for reasons that are beyond my control. I've tried to do what I can and improve what I can improve but sometimes there are obstacles that we can't surmount. xoxo Deb
1. I enjoy your content. It is like chatting with a friend. I trust you and feel you are genuine.
2. I hear creators say they aren't showing up and I always reply you did show up for me. Recently I realized they mean on home page. I never scrolled that I always hit my subs and go straight to a long line of videos I signed up for.
So lately I have been checking home page and rarely like a video or two of my subs come up. It is basically offering me new to me creators. The interesting thing is a lot of them are very small to small. Say 150 to 1000 subscribers. So that is curious.
3 my viewing has changed. A lot of health and fitness creators I loved have left. Some wait rarely post channel up no good bye but silent. I got into indie nail polish this past year so now enjoy a lot of that content. I still watch skincare and beauty though. Also went back more to my original learning content. 8 yrs ago my youtube was 4 main health fitness youtu era and lots of learning. Mostly health and functional medical. During covid that changed to more hobby friendship content.
I also do not view short form content or use tiktok at all.l
I have no idea if any of that helps, but there you go.

I don't do tic tock ever. Thank you for sharing this. I watch every single one of your videos because I enjoy you and it's not so much about the content. There are other UA-camrs that I'm more interested in the content than the creator and so I only have a limited amount of time to choose who to watch. So for those people if it's not a topic I care about, I will skip that video. I think all of your videos are valuable and I enjoy every one. Plus you have a great community here so the comments are always interesting and uplifting. I hope you'll keep doing what you're doing because you're amazing
I appreciate you talking about the fine balance of UA-cam and making videos for our subscribers while trying to appeal to a wider audience and how difficult that can be. Sometimes, UA-cam seems SO random as to what takes off and what bombs. I'm struggling with content ideas and what I want to make. I'm also changing in what I'm looking to watch. Oh my, yes! I'm so tired of being sold to. And I don't want to do that either. But new product reviews get the views. And yet, as a smaller channel who doesn't get pr and isn't making anything in adsense yet, it's expensive to try to stay on that hampster wheel. I'm glad I love the whole process because it's about so much more than the money. And yet, as you say, we all want to keep growing. You are doing a great job and are really the only bigger makeup creator I still watch regularly.
I don't have Tiktok. I have my trusted creators that I chose to follow on UA-cam because of their professionalism and quality. Even if I'm not particularly interested in the current video, I always try and watch because I want them to succeed. You my dear are at the top of that list. Keep being you and the success will be there.❤
I'm probably not the average person. I really like to listen to makeup and perfume videos in the morning while I'm getting ready and doing things around the house. So it's kind of a companion for me. I like to hear about products and ways to take care of my skin.
Ty Jen! You are spot on! Some of the content has been repetitive but I try to watch and support the content creators! I find a lot of your content really informative and interesting! I don't like drugstore but I try to watch and support them because of all the work involved!! 🎉🎉🎉I'm not a tiktok viewer and as you noted not all ideas are going to stick!!😅😅
I don't know but I feel like you're enjoying creating content more these days - and that you create content YOU want to make, rather than content you feel would perform best. I might be making this up but that is how I feel. And I like it!
I agree with you! I think the content that I want to make is also what I would want to watch so I guess you all kind of feel the same way and want to watch the same things. So far it seems to be working. 🥰🥰❤️❤️

I agree, I think that makes a big difference. Some influencers don’t interact at all in the comments. Those people don’t seem to get as many comments. But Jen actually interacts with her followers which makes us want to comment.
I was a little bored with my makeup (I don’t have much) until I got 2 of the new Makeup Revolution Colour Icon Palettes. They’re so beautiful.
I always watch all your videos since subscribing yrs ago. I always go to my subscriptions. I don’t really look at the home page. I really enjoy your videos. Helps with a mental break that I’ve truly needed since my mom’s passing. I just make a playlist and watch while I get ready.
I don’t have a TikTok. It just does t appeal to me. I tried it once then deactivated my account.
I do like watching drugstore video and I also like GRWM. I wish GRWM was popular with ppl. I know creators have said those videos don’t do as well. I enjoy them plus I like the fact the creator uses older products that so many of us love.

I hope you’re not leaving UA-cam as you are one of my favorite channels to watch when I’m home and I don’t watch TikTok’s because of how addicting and harmful the content is there (I mean it’s everywhere but TikTok pushes it more for me) but regardless of that I hope you get to do what you want and what’s best for you ❤

I don't have patience for short form clips, I know that sounds odd but it's the way I feel. Tiktok isn't even an option for me, I'd never install that cr*p on my devices. I enjoy your content a lot, you are probably the best reviewer I'm subscribed to, and I appreciate how down to earth and sincere you are. As for the algorithm, I don't really bother with that, I always go in my 'subscriptions' tab and there I can see any new uploads. Keep being the way you are, and know that you are appreciated.

I definitely miss your frequent haul videos! They were a highlight of my week 😊 I barely look through my home page. I just watch who I’m subbed to at this point.
I watch a lot of beauty videos. My favorite was Mel Thompson. I miss her so much. She really did close ups on applying her make up. She had a nice camera. The color was really good. You could really see what she was doing. There are not many UA-camrs that do that anymore.
