- It’s absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to write a powerful story without using the storytelling tools of Need and Desire. In this video essay analysis, by using the film Drive (2011) as an example, we’ll learn to recognize and write better stories like Drive, and how those stories function in movies and everywhere else.

Movies like this just don't get made very often. Drive was a gut punch of philosophy and horrific realism. Great analysis my man.
Beautifully said! There's certainly nothing wrong with the more typical story formula, and I think it's certainly what most people want when they sit down to watch a movie. But for those of us who really love stories, I think there'll always be something very important and special about a movie like Drive, and the "gut punch" it can deliver
@@ShaneBertram 100% Also, Drive hit me, as a young 28 year old father of three sons (One with Autism) who has struggled with drug addiction really, *really* hard. I went through a very, very similar complicated relationship with a single-ish older woman when I was younger, and like Driver, my love and desire and *need* for her and her son really pushed me to do certain things looking back on seem crazy. I went into Drive blind, and by the end of it, not much of a crier, found myself sobbing as if I was cleansing my soul. I will never forget that about this film. Great video by the way, man.

It's weird that my second and third favorite movies end with Ryan Gosling left wounded and having it up to interpretation if he dies after the credits role.

'Drive' is such a fantastic film. I can never get enough of people critiquing it from so many different angles. This was a take on it I've not seen before and was a very interesting commentary I'd not thought of before. Please keep making these essays, they're wonderful.

I learned something from watching this video, along with understanding and identifying the existence of "need" and "desire" in a story. I realized why I am subconsciously driven to stories exactly like this one. I connect with the drivers need and desire without even knowing of their existence. I am rooting for the driver, because in a way, I am rooting for myself. I connect with his flaws, his feelings that are inevitably dictated by what's lacking in his life. We often create a fantasy in our minds, much like a story, where we are the self-appointed hero who finally gets these opportunities to reveal who we fantasize of being, along with victoriously getting what we desire and need.
The scene where Standard tells his son how he met his wife is the best use of subtext I've ever seen, and also amazing at separating desire and need.

Sometimes you wonder how life is unfair-how what you need isn’t what you get. Stories are satisfying when they give you the opposite (thus why Rocky is so inspiring). But Drive takes the harsher path and it hits like a car-crash.
You're right! I think both kinds of stories are very necessary to calibrate our perception of life. And Drive manages to be beautiful in it's harsh-ness.
Underrated film and extremely beautiful to watch. There is poetry in the film. It depends on the perspective in watching it. Truly appreciate this kind of filmmaking.
Reminds me of there will be blood, Daniel Plainview becomes a tragic hero because his desire to win battles against his need for family, from H.W to his "fake" brother and dead father mother and brother. Don't forget Eli Sunday actually becomes his son through H.W's marriage to his sister.

Also, in the Novel, the Protagonist isnt even stabbed at the car. He foresees the action and turns the knife on the other guy, killing him without being harmed.

Such an under rated film.
Since you're analysing this based on Truby's criteria, it's useful to note that he defines two types of need: psychological (an element of the protagonist that he needs to change because it harms him) and moral (the element of himself he needs to change because it harms others). The driver's psychological need is for intimacy, and his moral need is to give up violent/illegal action as a means to an end. The tragedy of the story is that he wants to enact these changes, but the consequences of the actions he's already taken in his life make that impossible.
Is it weird how in both Blade runner and Drive, Ryan gets stabbed in both endings of the movies?

This video made me realize that the name of Drive is a double-entendre: It's both for the fact he's a driver, and that it's about what literally drives him to commit whatever actions he feels necessary to attain what he feels he needs. I may be a bit conceited in saying this, but I feel like that's incredibly deep, much deeper than most who saw the movie realize.

I really like your perspective on the double-meaning of the film's title. With a character of such few words, we're really forced to zoom our attention in on not only the intensity of his actions, but the internal mechanisms that DRIVE him to those actions and choices. Well said!

No way Drive gets greenlit today. Heavy R drama with an a-lister and expensive physical location/elements. Not attached to any franchise. Pretty sad. Drive was one of the last of good indie thrillers.

Funny, just watched this again over the weekend for like the 15th time. Not a lot of folks have even heard of it, but I consider it a classic. Tender and brutal, uncomplicated and still deep.
Talking about tbe chevy impala and how its the most common car there is talks of how everyone is normal with everyone with the hidden baddass engine that everybody wants to think they have and maybe they do really, talks about how normal everyone is but how everyone has tbe abilty to hit tbe gas or to really go 100 really talks how much every person has the abilty to be different and do what they need, im also reading into it way to much but great video man. Really gets you thinking

This movie really took me by surprise, two banal A-listers in my opinion, but here they are both directed brilliantly, their restraint and underacting reaches in and pulls our fucking hearts out.

Thanks, Diego! Great question! To give an answer: I think a character arc can ONLY be complete if it ends in "failure" if the writer knows what their doing, and supports it with the rest of the story, the way Drive does. In other words, only if the rest of the story makes that failure make SENSE. This is true even of tragedies, where the character's failure to obtain their NEED, and even sometimes their DESIRE is kind of the whole point of that breed of story. Or you could even study the character arc of a villain or opponent character type, who often have their own DESIRE and NEED, but most often have their arc end with failure.

What are great review! There’s also the theory that the elevator scene is just the drivers dream, wishful thinking so to speak. That’s why the lights dim down as soon as they kiss and go back to full brightness right after the kiss ends

I really want to want like Nic Refn's other films but idk... He might be a one hit wonder which is a real bummer. Only God Forgives, Valhalla, and Neon Demon are all beautiful but I think they fall prey to the "style over substance" trap
I'd have to say I largely agree. As you said, while they're undoubtedly visually beautiful films (a quality which has a lot of its own worth) they don't really feel quite as substantial to me as Drive does.

@@ShaneBertram I'd *love* to hear your thoughts on Refn's Amazon Prime series starring Miles Teller, "Too Old To Die Young". Unlike many of Refn's recent films, he got a high quality writer to work on the series with him (Much like Drive) in renowned comic book writer Ed Brubaker who also was a writer on Westworld. I personally really liked it, but each episode is very long except for the last one I believe. It's *very* unique and original and touches on many themes you may not expect, but it is *very* dark. Fantastic cinematography, great soundtrack by Cliff Martinez, and great acting from Miles Teller and everyone else. But it's not for everyone, though I believe the characters and story are more compelling and engaging then some of Refn's other films that he wrote and directed. Refn is a great director, I just think he struggles when he tries to do it all.
