Zhou Xun’s phenomenal performance as Ruyi is one of my favorite works of all time.
She felt too insanely, gut wrenchingly, gorgeously real to me. Where other actors would scream and cry, she would painfully hold back tears. Where other actors would scowl and yell in fury, she would fail to conceal a raised eyebrow. Her understated, subtle, and detail oriented acting was incredible to me. this kind of acting requires such mastery and nuance.
she made me so much more invested and enamored in Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace 🥰

I love ‘Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace’ I’ve watched the entire series more than 10 times now. I’m obsessed with the costumes and head dressing and the different shapes and sizes. The acting so elegant and Royal the actors ugh I can’t say enough. I tried watching Yanxi but I just can’t get into it it feels to cartoon anime type show.

That's what you call biased. 10 times🤭? You must love watching evil succeed because that's all that kept happening in that drama. It just wasn't good for my nerves.
Too bad because yanxi palace was more historically accurate and did better ratings than any other drama that year.
Historically he didn't want ruyi to be empress even though it is said she was without fault.
You're not even curious how they portray ruyi in yanxi palace? I gotta admit I liked her in both.

Yanxi has many inaccurate details ( where is the 1st prince and 3rd prince), 4th prince was murdered in the hands of consort Xian (?????) Consort Chun was fallen to Da ying (???) and where is the 8th prince, 9th prince, 10th prine, 11th prince, and other princess??, And sure, 5th prince buried by the Noble consort? And Empress XiaoXianChun and Imperial Noble Consort HuiXian commit suicide ??? And Imperial Noble Consort ChunHui was murdered ??? And consort Rong was changed into Consort Chun ???? and the step empress cut her hair in front of many people ??? really Is that history of what your misfunction brian think ?
The step empress became the empress in QianLong year 15, at that time, his throne must be steady, then If he wanted to, he could get her into the empress throne easily, BUT HE DOESN'T WANT? no shit, step empress even got the Imperial Noble Consort "攝六宮事" which means she can control the palace within her hands as the empress , and the time was just after empress XiaoXianChun's death 3 months, then how didn't he want her to be the empress?

I love both shows, but Ruyi love in the Palace has a much better story line and the characters are more developed. Also characters in Yanxi concentrated more on the main leads stories. Unlike in Ruyi's, everyone's story, whether it's the main characters or supporting were better explained, giving the viewers better understanding on what it's all about.

I loved both dramas, even though their take on the historical figures and how history played out was different. As well as the overall tone of each, with Yanxi Palace being a lot more light-hearted and comedic in comparison to Ruyi's Royal Love. However, they both excelled in adding depth to the rivals and/or villains of each drama's heroine. They weren't 2-D evil, but had reasons for their evil actions. It didn't justify the bad they did, but you can see why these things pushed them down those dark paths.

Ruyi is the Chinese drama that I rather sleep late at night to chase & watch! I think the quality of the production is high. The actresses & actors bring me in to the drama, they portrayed the characters very well! The scripts/words are deeper & bring much more emotions. I can say it’s the best palace drama I’ve ever watched. Tho the story is very traumatic but I think that’s more realistic compared to Yanxi. I just couldn’t finish Yanxi bcoz I couldn’t get compromise into the drama as like in Ruyi. Zhouxun really did a very good job in portraying Ruyi.

I enjoyed both series very much and like them both for different reasons. The leads and supporting casts did a phenomenal job. Just finished watching both series back to back and in same order for the third time and still give Ruyi a slight edge. For those who grew up in 90a and watched a lot do Stephen Chow films will know this reference of a silhouette of 2 women dressed in Qing dynasty era dancing to western style urban hip-hop (running man) on Stephen chow's shoulder to James bond theme. Everytime I see the fashion from this era makes me think back to that and lmao off. Ancient Chinese women dancing to 90s hip hop style

Yanxi has better characters than Ruyi? Where? When? Who? The main character is basically a Mary Sue played by a bad actress, her acting was appalling I can't. And in which era in Chinese history does a maid raise her voice at the Emperor, call him a prostitute and get away with it? How did she summon a freaking lightning strike on that woman? And why does she always outsmarts everyone and has the last laugh? Yeah, because that's called lazy writing, pathetic. Ruyi doesn't have lazy writing, Ruyi doesn't have a Mary Sue, Ruyi doesn't have badly written one dimensional characters, Ruyi doesn't have ridiculous plot that makes no sense, Ruyi doesn't do fan service for making the main girl win everytime.
Ruyi is a realistic tragic story that reminds people that nothing good can come from a period that encouraged polygamy marriage where women were seen as reproducing tools and all power lies in the palm of one man, so yeah, you're not supposed to feel joy after watching it.

@@phannhan2024 Such a show should not be called "Ruyi's Royal Love in Palace" it should be called "Ruyi's Royal Failure to find Love and Getting Tortured instead in Palace."
I absolutely felt disgusted that such high production value was wasted on a typical tragedy story we have seen 10000 times in c-dramas since 1980s.
Yanxi gave something new to look forward to, and I hope future C-dramas realize the time has come to start having strong and smart female leads like Yanxi for the next generation.
Yanxi doesn't lie and pretend to be a "love story". it is a story about revenge. Ruyi lies about being a love story, and instead gives you hours and hours of emotional torture instead, and ends up with the main character giving up on love and marriage in the end.

      1. Empress XiaoXian did not commit suicide (suicide is considered a big offence in the harem and may inflict punishment to their clansmen). She died during the Eastern tours. Accurate to Ru Yi
      2. There’s no such twin sister of Concubine Jia lol.
      3. The social status of an opera singer is inferior to even a prostitute. Concubine Gao wouldn’t be possible to know how to sing Chinese operas.
      4. The concubine that was killed by Ying Luo using the lightning in fact lived up to the age of 94.

I very much prefer Ruyi's Royal Love In The Palace. It's my absolute favourite historical cdrama, with Story of Minglan being a close second. Everything about the product is flawless from the scenery and the props to the acting and costumes. The music and filmscore are also exquisite. I also love the changes from the novel, like Ruyi being vindicated before she died, and her dying of illness rather than suicide. It's was a beautifully-told tragic love story that's hauntingly realistic (at least to life, even if not historically). Ruyi utterly bruised my heart, but it was a painful ending that was poignantly perfect.

The way they talk about broader subjects, how it affects everyone and more. Censorship is super strict in China so when the censors saw it, they immediately took action. You prefer Ruyi because you don't have regard in history. Historically speaking, the story and costume in Yanxi Palace is more accurate. Although Ruyi's costume is beautiful and accurate, that fashion were from later era. My point of view is from someone who studied history and seen the actual costumes from that era in museum.

My personal take on these 2 dramas. Both were during Qianlong’s reign. I watched Ruyi first and liked it. So started to look for “Yanxi” to watch (this year) since it was so popular then. After watching Yanxi, I “fell in love with it” and watched it again & again. But I couldn’t bring myself to watch Ruyi again because it’s very sad (太残忍了). Costumes wise, I prefer Yanxi’s dressing. Admit though that not all the actresses in Yanxi are pretty enough. But then, it’s the drama as a whole (& not just pretty faces).

I'm surprised by the comments as I like Yanxi Palace way more than Ruyi. While both are full of court (/harem) intrigues and women competing against each others, Yanxi also has Wei Yingluo's personal quest in the begining with her sister and different dinamics with her starting point as a maid, while in Ruyi it feels way more as a soap opera with mean girls (emperor included) against the protagonist, just because it's sad doesn't mean it's darker or more profound. I also prefer Yanxi's emperor (obviously) and Yingluo who is crafty, pro-active and not love-focused. The emperess Nara also feels more dynamic and 3 dimensional in Yanxi, in my opinion, she does love the emperor, but it's not only his love (or lack of) that shapes her, but her childhood upbringing and family, her expirience in the palace with her morals... Not saying that Yanxi is perfect, but it seems more dynamic and interesting for me.

I discovered these dramas in the last few months. I have to admit I ache for Ruyi. I found her journey painful to watch. I began the Yanxi feeling a bit heavy-hearted but the story went a different way and I enjoyed the more playful aspect of the show. I've not been able to watch the whole Ruyi version. I get so irate when the women are all against Ruyi and all she wanted was his love and happiness. During the shows where Ruyi was feisty, I loved them so much.

Thank you, I loved ruyi, yu and jai performances but the story was too painful for me. Yanxi was well rounded and had a good ending, I love strong female leads but with wei yinglou she wasn't taking anybody's evil deeds and that resonates with more than suffering in silence. Both Ruyi and Wei yinglou taught me about patience and grace.

Ruyi is my fave without a doubt. My top C Drama, in fact. It's hard for me to watch Yanxi bc Ruyi's Ling Fei was hateful and I couldn't help but carry that bias to Yanxi's Ling Fei. I find the actors more compelling and the costume and production design better in Ruyi too. (And to be shallow for a minute, the actors in Ruyi are more appealing to me visually ;;;) But most of all, Zhou Xun's Ruyi is just everything to me. Some people in this comment sections are so fixated on "HiSTOriCallY CorReCTNeSS" and trying to downplay Ruyi for it, but sorry to break it to you all but it was Yanxi that is a disgrace to real history.
Ruyi’s creators never claimed that their show were historically correct, nor they tried to make it so, it’s based on a novel, it’s fiction, not a history textbook. Yanxi’s director and fanbase on the other hand looove preaching about how aligned with history they are but when looking carefully and doing a full on comparison and you’d realize they’re full of $h!t.
1/ Where is Fuca Empress’s only daughter Princess Gurun Hejing in Yanxi? In real history record she outlived most of Qianlong’s children and had a huge influence during his reign yet she doesn’t even exist in Yanxi. And where are 1st Prince Yonghuang and 3rd Prince Yongzhang? They all lived ‘til way into their 20s, where are they in Yanxi?
2/ Imperial Noble Consort Chunhui had 3 kids, yet in Yanxi she only has 6th Prince and somehow is able to keep her virginity years after being a concubine in Yanxi, WTF?
3/ What on Earth are Senior Ja and Junior Ja Consort? Imperial Noble Consort Shuja was ONE person in history, and she was from a even nobler family than Noble Consort Huixian, so the idea that her having to rely on Consort Huixian to survive is laughable.
4/ Concubine Shun lost her virginity, has a kid and still gets offered to become the Emperor’s concubine. I mean, seriously?
5/ There are 3 of the King’s wives commit suicide in Yanxi, including Fuca Empress herself. Do you even know what a felony it was for an Empress or concubine to commit suicide? They’d be ripped all of their titles and have their maternal family heavily punished, no matter what position they held when alive. Fuca Rongyin walking barefoot in a nightgown jumping to her death? This is an atrocity.
6/ A maid who runs around the Forbidden City like a lunatic, always ready to raise her voice against the masters and talk back at them, yelling at the Emperor, calling him a prostitute and then get away with it because “she saved him from being sick”? That almost never happens, anywhere in history. Should you watch Ruyi to see what happen to an EMPRESS after she talks back at the Emperor.
7/ There’s a huge Empress’s Consecration Ceremony for Ruyi, while Sushen becomes an Empress in front of a mirror, LOL.
And these are only a few I can collect from mere memory to indicate how ridiculous and laughable some Yanxi’s fans’ ignorance is, there’s ton more. This Yanxi show is a total garbage bin yet you still have the the guts to compare it to the masterpiece that is Ruyi’s Love In The Palace, I must applaud your terrible taste in arts.

Ruyi's story is a realistic, profound and very well crafted piece of historical fiction, Yanxi just cannot compare, sorry to anyone who prefer Yanxi but just the fact. Maybe it's fun for kids and teenagers to watch but that ends there. Yanxi's plot, theme and characters are much more shallow, one dimensional, childish and ridiculous, the schemes are very half-assed and illogical if you really think about it, they're mostly quick and petty retaliations on one another rather than thoughtful and longterm plans like in Ruyi. The characters in Yanxi are absolute bores that are only bads and only goods with so little depth of personality or development, maybe except for the second Empress, while Ruyi has a wide set of morally grey characters. Ruyi as a protagonist is not some overpowered Mary Sue who runs around shouting and winning, Ying Luo on the other hand is overall a bad character played by a bad actress.
