    Chinese can't tell the difference between German, American or Russian and lump them all as whites. But to be fair how many Americans can tell the difference between Korean, Japanese or Chinese?

    • @SimHarrison

      bird718 C-Milk is German. He is also American. Is there an issue?

      @jaredbowhay-pringle1460 7 років тому +3

      I don't think the idea is to be able to differentiate people based on their appearance - I doubt I'd be able to pick out between, say, Danes, Dutch and Germans, but to appreciate that there are differences between all these different people, instead of lumping them all into one group.

    I am bilingual. The response from the Chinese waiter laowhy didn't translate is "I haven't seen Jews before but based on what we learned from the book. Jews are not the smartest, probably same level as us but (I think) they are good business people and know how to make money."
    This obviously contradicts with the stereotype discussed here.

      Nice translation, one mistake was that Waiter did not say Jews are same level as Chinese though

      Nobel Prizes have been awarded to over 850 individuals, of whom at least 22% were Jewish or people of Jewish descent, although Jews comprise less than 0.2% of the world's population (or 1 in every 500 people). Meaning, Jews are clearly not just smart about making money. (By the way, Chinese people make up 20% of the world's population--or 1 in every 5 people--and have won about 1% of the Nobel Prizes). How 'bout them apples, David Chen?

Your screen name says everything. Go back to your hole.

    Dudes! This is a pretty good explanation about things with Chinese culture from a Westerners point of view. I was with a friend in Zhongshan that looked Asian but didn't speak any Asian language since he was raised in Europe and noticed he had a totally different experience from local Chinese as well as foreigners! You should do a video on that as well! The Chinese couldn't understand why he never responded to them and when I told them he was Meiguo, that stunned look and silence it drew from the Chinese people was total disbelief. At the same time when he speaks with expats there it's a double take for them.

      Britain is traditionally a socialist county, so it was all about knocking down the nail that sticks out (i.e. the successful person). Now it's very different and is even shown in recent politics with the downfall of the Labour party.

      The chiding thing is that you don't talk too much about your success or you may come across as egotistical. Americans tend to sell themselves more, so can come off in more conservative countries as being self-absorbed or big headed.

    Great video guys -- I used to live in Colombia and know the ex-pat drill -- or at least I think I do.
    I'm heading to China again and pleased to have another opportunity to ride the ride. After viewing some ex-pat videos warning against a recent rise in anti-foreign sentiment (in China), I smiled to myself knowing my country wrote the book on fearing and mistreating strangers. China has a long way to go before they achieve such heights of xenophobia.
    A smile opens a world of doors -- yes, one must practice common sense, but being a dick is never good practice or form. The human community can be pretty grand if you let it out in the open air. You gents seem to be doing just fine with a generous portion of humor!

    It's really no different anywhere. It's just the severity of the stereotype from people all over the world. I was born in a big city in Texas, but overseas, they think we are all cowboys. I haven't been to China yet, but Japan and the Philippines also had common misconceptions of foreigners in general. I'm sure it's common all over the globe.
    Thanks for the videos, I'm learning a lot about China from you and others I subscribe to. I will go there shortly for a visit and I would like to learn some Mandarin first. These videos help us get acquainted with a different culture before we actually get there.

    I am Chinese, I get same type of stereotype in UK as well. It is hard for Western ppl to identify Asians as they can not identify whether an Asian is from China Japan or Korea. It is the same for Asians, for example I can recognise the difference between an American and a Russian, but I can not see the difference between A Scandinavian person and a British person or a German unless they speak their own language infront of me. BTW, China is a huge country, just like the US and CANADA, northern Chinese actually look like a different race with the southerners, you will realize this when you live in China for a Long time...

  • @TheAllen501
    @TheAllen501 7 років тому +1

    Many Chinese know much less about Canada than the US, but they generally have extremely positive stereotypes of the Canadians compared to those of the Americans.
    Due to the Hollywood movies, the most commonly believed stereotypes of Americans by most Chinese especially by the less educated Chinese or the very local Chinese who cannot speak English and never have a chance to travel is that USA always remind them of MONEY, SEX, GUNS and WARS. And it's not just the Chinese people's stereotypes of America, but also the stereotypes of the Americans in many other countries.

    I'm Canadian and have studied in France. Even well educated French people don't really draw any cultural differences between Canadian and Americans. Until I lived in France i never knew I would simply be identified as an anglo saxon as opposed to continental european culture. Then again until I lived in France I didn't know the great cultural difference found in different french regions which is true of most european countries. Same is true of most countries but even the larger european countries are pretty small.

    I love Canada and visited the major cities in Quebec (Quebec City, Montreal, Trois Rivieres), Ontario (Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara Falls) , New Brunswick (St. John, Moncton, Fredericton), Nova Scotia (Truro, Amherst, Halifax) and Prince Edward Island (Charlottetown). Canada and the States are just as amazing as China although the former are relatively young in history. To tell the truth, I prefer listening to the more heavily accented British English (just like Parisian French or northern Mandarin) than Canadian, American or Australian English. I guess it's more original. American Caucasians are seldom purely German or purely French from my experience of interacting with them. They always have a mix in say one fourth French, one sixteenth Polish, half German, etc., lol.
    Caucasians in Asian countries are considered just as exotic as Asians in white countries like the States and Canada. Just as Asians often seek to marry Caucasians to pride themselves in, I was told by many Americans that Caucasians often find marrying Asians very cool. To be sure, their offspring often get the best features from both parents inheriting beautiful facial features from the Caucasian parent (beautiful eyes, tall nose) and silky skin from the Asian parent. Many Miss Hong Kong winners (高丽虹,李嘉欣,郭倩妮)or movie stars like Russell Wong and his brother, are Caucasian and Asian mix offspring.
    Btw, Jews 犹太人and oriental people are all descendants of Shem, one of Noah's three sons (Shem, Ham, Japheth), that survived the Flood, and thus are all semitic. Not to spread any religion here, but we Chinese have worshiped the same God 上帝 or 天 as the God of the Bible (of Jews and Christians) for almost 2000 years before the advent of Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism 儒释道 which came right in the middle of the 5000 years of Chinese history timeline (around 600 - 500 B.C.). So it's only natural to worship 上帝 that the ancient Chinese like 黄帝 Yellow Emperor or 炎帝 Emperor Yan or Laozi or Confucius have worshiped than to believe in Buddhism (from India) or Confucianism (Confucius was just a person, not God), although it might surprise you that the Dao 道 in Daoism is actually Jesus Christ Himself as Laozi 老子 was prophesying the coming of the Dao (the Way as in 道路, the Principle or Word as in 道理,or to speak as in 说道, with all three meanings pointing to the character of Jesus Christ) in Dao De Jing 道德经。That's a whole rabbit to chase which I will elaborate on more if you are interested in.
    So yeah, from the standpoint of genetics (Punnett Square, dominant and recessive genes, alleles, etc.), I am sure Olivia is going to be another Miss Hong Kong or Miss Chinese International winner, aka, exceptional beauty! God bless! =)

    We don't chide people for being rich in the UK. Here it's considered very rude to ask how much money somebody has or how successful somebody is. You can often tell by the way people behave and look what kind of upbringing they had. We don't hate people for having more than us, we just don't talk about those kinds of things. A rich person will often have a good upbringing, therefore they would generally be quite polite and wouldn't flaunt of show off their wealth.

    Biy, you sure know different English people from me! The English I know do nothing BUT brag, and it's never about what they do in life, it's about the school they went to , the level they attained at that school etc. All they talk about is the class system i. their country, that is, where they fit inside of it...

    Stereotypes are sometimes actually true, we Dutch wear wooden clogs, because the invention of shoe's has still to this present day evaded us and yes we all live in windmills, can get a bit drafty though, we eat nothing but cheese so, don't stand next to one off us in an elevator (i'm serious, don't!) , we all have a Danish sounding accent although we are blissfully unaware of this ourselves so, stop reminding us, and our woman all have braided hair and yes we know we are freakishly tall, it's been mentioned one's or twice before!
    Best thing is not to take yourself to serious, the person profiling you is already doing that in some way or another!Good video C-Milk, again 👍😆 dude!

      In my experience Chinese people know next to nothing about Holland though. At best, they know about tulips or cheese being big here. That's OK, because Americans I met knew just as little ;) though they tend to mention 'legal whores and weed'

    I live in the US right now and Americans confuse Chinese, Japanese and Korean all the time. Americans assume every east Asian is Chinese. Remember the "this is the library" guy who shut down the protesters? All American friends of mine assumed he was Chinese, but to me his accent and look were definitely Korean. You see it's the same! Some countries you know well and some you just don't. The culture is too different.

    I think to lump Brits as a equalizing (not even sure if using the 'tall poppy' analogy was in it's correct context here!) society shows a somewhat naivety, In fact, far from it, the British culture is based on the class structure FAR MORE than American society. We have aristocracy, upper middle class, lower middle class and the working class each has delineations greater than what I witnessed when I visited the USA. Even the American military has a far more relaxed hierarchy than the British Army where that, even to this day a lot of career 'Higher' Officers do originate from family's with double-barreled names, Fox hunting (pre ban days) Polo tournaments, toasting the Queen when wearing silly best dress at numerous functions. In fact if your receive a commission in the forces, the first thing they teach you is how to be a Gentleman! (WTF? I hate all that class snobbery, !) I do not hate or try to 'cut down' successful people, In fact the way that Brits are discussed here is an almost communist view, Britain may be a more socialistic country ( NOT CLASS, there;s a difference) but that means Free health care for all, even the aristocracy is entitled to it should they choose! But that is not chopping all to same level? My younger brother married an American and now lives in California, I have been to America on several occasions, How many times have the people giving their opinions (C Milk and friend) even visited the UK? Britain may be a small country, able to fit entirely into some US states but is comprised of 4 nations within a nation, i.e. England (Be surprised how many Americans even to this day call British , English! or they say 'In England' when referring to Britain) so there is England, Scotland, Ireland (Northern Ireland) and Wales, There are big differences even between these small countries and you dont often hear an american describe himself as a 'Texan' or a Mississippian! But Often a 'Brit' will say he/she are 'Welsh, or 'I'm Scottish etc we have a far more varied culture and to say that we do not congratulate or even aspire to successful entrepreneurial values is naive. If you live in the UK as they have lived in China, then perhaps a more accurate picture of a national could be arrived at than merely one gained from meeting the Odd Brit living in china. It was a bit irritating to see such ignorant comments made with no actual experience of that culture, i.e. Living in the UK! I would never make a comment about Chinese culture above that of 'C -Milk' as he indeed, lives there (even though I was born and raised as a Kid In Hong Kong to a Welsh mother and an English father) I appreciate that Cantonese colonial Hong Kong of the 60's is nothing like mainland China, and to say what was said about 'British people was basically incorrect, in fact, I would go so far as to say that our values are maybe 'NOT' the same American's as was suggested here.
    I like the series and find them very informative but this was a bit naive and could be seen as almost inflammatory by some! having said that, I wish these lads well and hope that it all works out good for them living in such a culture as Mainland China!

    From an outsider's perspective i.e. from outside the US and Britain or another English-speaking country, American and British culture would be very similar since Britain spawned the US and British culture was the dominant culture which caused immigrants from other European countries to conform to it.
