Same here! The best of of this game, and one of the best musics from mega drive I think. Incredible how retro-soundtracks can stick to your mind and new videogame generation orchestral soundtracks don't.
I think this is one of the Mega Drive / Genesis soundtracks which require a real YM2612 for correct playback, because the aliasing noise of the flawed DAC design was used as part of the sound design. On emulators, the instrumens fade away too quickly, while on a real YM2612, the decay phases are much longer audible. Btw, truly great channel, thank you very much for taking the time to make high quality recordings on real hardware, so that people can actually experience what the real hardware sounds like. All YM2612 software emulations out there do NOT emulate the real characteristics of the DAC.
+Alianger Off the top of my head, the decay at the end of the Streets of Rage title theme is one. You can also kind of abuse it by setting patches to low volume and detuning them between two channels to get a pretty convincing chorus effect. I think the DAC stuff isn't emulated yet because it's not well understood. If you set Genesis Plus GX to have 7 bit output, you get a pretty close approximation though.
***** Does the 2612 really use floating-point internally? Seems sort of wasteful when it just gets truncated down like that. There exists a FM synth VST plugin (Dexed) that can be set to an "OPL" mode where it uses a sine look-up table based on OPL3 to get the values of the sine waves used in the synthesis. It sounds pretty good--I use it in my own music. It makes me wonder if 2612 emulation could be implemented in a similar way. Aside from that you'd need to simulate more than just a low-pass filter. There is also the nonlinearity of op-amps to consider. I also think a truly great emulator would be able to authentically reproduce the awful sound output of a Model 2 VA1.8 with the terrible overengineered LM358 based amplifier. :)
First game I ever played on the Genesis, 22 years ago. Hearing the OST immediately brings back all those memories. It aged pretty well, the music is still awesome.
+Robert Bledsaw III The Stage 6-1 theme sounds like a remix of the stage 3 theme of Batman for the PC Engine, which also has excellent music considering the hardware.
