"Yea if u don't know..I can't help u..... wait I remember not knowing... yea I'll help you". Bro that had me dying.. Your the g.o.a.t old man! Thanks for the lesson .
Dude... Thank you!!! My governer setting was way out of whack and I did it just like you said and it worked like a charm. Thanks so much for making this video. You really solved all my frustrations!!!! Take care and God bless my friend!
I also have no manuals on any part of the tractor and watched a video of a guy that said there was a complete manual you have to get, but there was no link. He said it was a free download. Thank you.
Thanks for posting. I read the K series service manual about governor adjustment and was not sure if I understood it. Your video confirmed I was on the right track, so my rebuild will go well.
Thank you - I have a 1966 wheel horse 856 and muffler is getting red hot and throwing some flames. Going to adjust valves this weekend and check points. Engine was rebuilt like 37 years ago lol.
This was very helpful and I thank you for taking the time to record it. I also thank you for pulling back that TDC comment. I'm brand new to the small engine world and really excited to learn! Kind folks like you that record these instructions make it possible for new guys like me to enjoy the hobby as well. I'd actually love to see one on checking TDC plz if you have not already made one. I'll check you video library. In the meantime I have some Cubs sitting in my driveway that need some love :)
Thanks Travis!!!! I can't remember what it was that I'd asked.... It was either the valve adjustment or the governor adjustment, either way you covered both.... Nice video and easily explained!!! . Merrie-Merrie
thanks for uploading and taking time to explain things properly.ive just bought a howard gem with a kohler k301 engine that may need a bit of engine work , this vid will be a great help to sort it
I just started following you because I watched this video and I love the way you explain stuff, keep staying awesome dude! Oh yes and by the way the info helped, thank you.
How do you lock them since when you hold the bottom one the top one will turn in both directions the change cleaance so I don't see how you can 'lock' them. I watched another video which said they are not locking, just adjust and leave.
6:03 can someone explain me about locking the nuts together, the manual didn’t say mucho about actual procedure valve adjustment, and other videos don’t mention anything about tightening those nuts together
not yet the weather has kept me at bay. i'm a month behind, but making up for it by acquiring extra needed supplies to complete this project. i got the roof today, hunting the beams and post now....lol, kinda bass ackwards aint i.... Peace!!
good stuff I would luv to find a wheel horse some day I luv my simplicity tractor I hope it works out and I get it going. I have a good friend helping me with. the same guy I bought it from. he knew I would like to learn on it and he sold it to me.
Turn engine until one valve is pushed up, spring is compressed - - - - Then the other Valve is down and go adjust it !!!! Now turn engine until the other spring is pushed up - - - - now the other Valve is ready for you to Adjust it !!!!! This is one way to do it !!!! When ever one valve is wide open the other one has got to be fully closed !!
I have a 1971 12 hp Wheel Horse Kohler 301 engine. I can give you any id numbers if needed. My grandfather bought it new. Anyway the throttle was not running very fast like it used to. So I readjusted the throttle cable from the dash. and it seam to pick up the pace more. Anyway I drove it up and down the street and I heard a pop sound that was not good. It lost all drive but made no metal on metal sounds. Where should I start looking for issues? Ive never worked on these engines before.
Use the lesser clearance is for a valve that have been ran for a while, and use the greater clearance for a fresh reground valve face and seat (As the valve and seat wear into each other, the clearance will be lessened over time.)
I'm lost on the governor adjustment. My c-120 sat for about 4 years and I got it back out to start mowing with it cause my c-141 is down. Long story short. Once I got the k301 going with fresh oil and carb cleaned and adjusted I noticed it sounded like it was revving higher than it should. So I got an old tach from a family member that read 3800rpm wide open throttle. Which as we both know is 200 rpm too high. So I had my father n law adjust it and now its at like 3200rpm which is ok I guess but once I engage the hydrostat and the deck blades the rpm drops like 1500 rpm and when i start to move or try going up a hill it just about dies. Its like it can't pick the rpm back up. I cant tell from the video what you adjusted on the governor. My father in law did all the adjusting the first round and was showing me. He said to break the clamping nut loose then put your vise grips on the shaft on the end and hold the throttle closed then break brass nut loose and turn the shaft the vise grips are on counterclockwise just alittle all while holding throttle closed. Then lock back all nuts. And that didn't help.
Travis--The 2 tiny (3mm) screws holding the throttle plate to the throttle shaft of my K301 engine vibrated out. I retrieved 1 screw but the other one got on the top of the piston and smashed the spark plug electrode. I pulled the plug and ran the starter a lot. The engine sounded normal and the compression was normal (thumb). Will my engine survive?
Hi, great video. I recently bought an old gravely tractor with a Kohler K301 12hp engine on it. I haven't turned it over with the starter yet but can spin it by hand. It's exhaust valve is stuck open (I know) and I was wondering if I have a problem or it's the automatic pressure release doing its job. That model has an automatic pressure release, it that why it's open?
I have the k301aqs in a Cub Cadet 1250, and I know mine does have the automatic pressure release on the exhaust until it is started. I am pretty sure this feature would be on all the k301.
What do I do if when I adjust the the control arm all the forward like you showed and lock it down it just falls back toward the driver like there is no tension holding the throttle forward ... My throttle doesn't even adjust the rpm until 3/4 throttle and at max it's not running very fast at all
I have a 129 that just got a rebuilt engine, and so want to set this right. I did what you (and others) have told me, but notice that with the throttle control all the way off (pushed down as far as it goes) the governor arm appears to be pulled too far to the right to manually be pushed all the way to the left to completely open the carb. It doesn't go that far unless I push the throttle up part way, then the governor arm moves freely all the way ccw. Does this make sense or is something off in my speed bracket adjustment?
picked a 1076 with k241 10hp and it loses power going up hill or pulling anything....was wondering if it is the governor...starts runs fine...this is the only problem this thing has for being 56 years old
I have a 12hp kohler and have no compression at all, could that be a valve problem ?, valve cover was off when I bought engine, also seems to have a weak spark,I heard about ACR when doing a compression test and was told to turn engine in reverse, not sure.
+eastside0434 I'm wondering the same thing!!! My Gravely 5660 has a K301 12hp on it and the exhaust valve is open. I don't know if it's a problem or the ACR doing it's job! I don't know. Please let me know if you find out anything, I'll do the same for you!
Does anyone know if I can just decompress valve springs, detach keepers, and pull springs directly out? Is there anything linking the valve to the tippet? I have an engine just like this. I guess the valve rod is sitting/compressed directly on top of the adjustment. Any advice?
It would kill me to loose this tractor. I first cut grass on it in 1980. So I have been on and off it for 32 years. IS it possible that I over revved and blew something apart? I have looked at the rebuild kits and if I am going to get into this should I rebuild the entire thing? I am a Jeeper so I am used to tearing things up and rebuilding them but have no experience on this type engine. I am a Disabled Veteran so I cant spend $700 for a rebuilt engine.
Don't be lazy and use silicon. Use the proper Briggs or insert manufacturer here paper gasket. I get tired of opening up fouled up engines that are loaded with silicon inside. Amateur hour......

Thanks a million man. Straightforward and simple.
just finished rebuild, new rings, lapped in valves now running sweet as a nut ,thanks crazy
subscribed, simple instructions, thank you for this
You my friend are a natural teacher,
very informative and easy to understand thanks for the help I have a Kohler K301ASQ the rebuild will go swell thanks to you.
thanks for uploading and taking time to explain things properly.ive just bought a howard gem with a kohler k301 engine that may need a bit of engine work , this vid will be a great help to sort it

Wow, worked on my rebuild finally after a 10 month break last night. :-) Great reference for me. Thanks
Thank you sir . This will help me alot on my cub 147
you dumbed it down just the right amount that i can understand
Solid video. Well explained and easy to follow. Thanks
Kohler 8hp carb adjustments
Glad Suzie is such a great helper :)
good vid bud you explained it to were I could understand it!! thanks good job!!!
Cool vid my friend, I have an old Kohler on the to do list..lol..see ya next time :D
Nice Manual ..!!
great info , i got a 12 i need to resurrect , hidden out by the plows.
Thanks for uploading this video. I shall put in favorites for future reference.
I love good people.. great video.

Travis you need to do dvd's, and make it really easy. I'm tellin you buddy these would sell.
Thanks helped me on my rebuild
Good video

Less beer, more work. WOW!!!
Just for clarification, that shaft should be all the way counter clockwise?
You are a good joker yes it’s clearly counter clockwise 😂

Another comment. So what are the signs that I should be looking to adjust my valves?
Audible tapping sound from the valve train, engine hard to start, or bogging down/losing power under a load.
Wow that is easier than i thought! Thanks buddy!! BTW how do i find TDC..... lol just playing nice engine
Thanks!
excellent vid thank-you subbed your channel

I'd like to hear the reason why he changed his valve clearance from the spec?
good stuff man, I like watching your videos, keep em rolling...I'll assume this would be the same on a 8hp K series...
Great video Travis, your a mine of handy information arn't ya :-)
I have a early 80s troybilt tiller with the k161t kohler my valves dont have nuts on the bottom how do i adjust them

Which way should I go if I want to increase my RPM

snoopdogie187 Thanks, it's been running fine now, so glad I don't have to dig into it!

how do you lock the adjustment screw in place once you have it set? is it just an interference fit that stays put where ever you put it?
yes
picked a 1076 with k241 10hp and it loses power going up hill or pulling anything....was wondering if it is the governor...starts runs fine...this is the only problem this thing has for being 56 years old
i have a k321 changed over electronic ignition starts but when you trottle up it floods out bought 2 new carb doing the same what can be wrong
also my governor setting is at the highest hole on the adjustment tab
Lol...Love your logic!! cant get it to top dead center you cant work on it!! 😂
you sure the nuts lock together? that just opens the clearance real wide
I have a 12hp kohler and have no compression at all, could that be a valve problem ?, valve cover was off when I bought engine, also seems to have a weak spark,I heard about ACR when doing a compression test and was told to turn engine in reverse, not sure.

would this be the same with a M10 motor? Thats what I have on my 310-8.
Some newer Kohlers have hydraulic lifters.
What about the ACR?
Please email me. How do i find top dead center without timing light.
Does anyone know if I can just decompress valve springs, detach keepers, and pull springs directly out? Is there anything linking the valve to the tippet? I have an engine just like this. I guess the valve rod is sitting/compressed directly on top of the adjustment. Any advice?

ok, I think I'll leave that one alone, it's still runs good....
done....
Your video would be so much better if you got a tripod. Sea sickness is real
The K stands for KNOCKING SON OF A BITCH!...
Don't be lazy and use silicon. Use the proper Briggs or insert manufacturer here paper gasket. I get tired of opening up fouled up engines that are loaded with silicon inside. Amateur hour......
Agreed
So Google thinks this is a k582, give me what I asked for not some random size because you don't know!!!!!
Big deal
