- This vitrified fort lies on top a headland which commands extensive views of the Moray Firth. Originally believed to be Ptolemy's 'Ptoroton' and the 'Torffness' of the Orkneyinga Saga it is now known to be of Pictish origin. It encloses 3 hectares and is three times as large as any other fort of the same period in Scotland and is thought to be the oldest Pictish Fort. It was defended on the landward side by three banks and ditches which were destroyed during the creation of the harbour and modern village, their age is therefore uncertain. Six striking carved slabs known as the Burghead Bulls were discovered during excavations. Four of the originals are held locally in Burghead Library and Elgin Museum and one each in the Royal Museum, Edinburgh, and in the British Museum, London. Much of the fort was destroyed during the re-building of the village from 1805-09. The Doorie Hill (see below), which marked the junction of the citadel and the bailey, is the only remaining piece of the southern ramparts. Lengths of the eastern and northern ramparts are also still visible.
How wonderful of the Georgian rich to build a shiny new village for the locals - conveniently didn't mention the highland clearances that caused the need for villages like Burghhead to be built - I guess history is still written by the winning side !

I'm incredulous that this program has completely overlooked one of the most exciting and interesting gems of the UK coastline, namely, the royal manor, PORTLAND in Dorset - especially, considering it's exceptional historical, geographical and geological intrigue. For example: It has some of the most amazing coastal views in the UK (including the aerial view the Dam Busters' test ground, Chesil Beach). It has an amazing history: (source of Portland stone, used in some of the world's most famous historical buildings, such as St. Paul's Cathedral, the UN Building in New York, etc. Once home of William Penn, the revered 17th century founder of Pennsylvania, USA, it was a key WW2 naval base and launch-place of the D-Day invasion, is the site of many shipwrecks, a Post-war underwater weapons establishment, and one of the top civil engineering wonders of the western world: Portland Breakwater, and has one of the best preserved 17th century coastal forts in the UK. It's a mecca for rock-climbers, wind surfers and fossil hunters and was home of the 2012 Sailing Olympics! Visually, it has some of the most spectacular views of the Jurassic Coast Footpath, I could go on. But, hey, all this is clearly not interesting enough for the makers of "Coast"!!

No doubt the bull stones are connected with the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh. Highlanders I believe were mostly dark hair brown eyes. The DNA remnants of the House of Israel forced to blend into Roman/British society. Very much like the later american Indians of whom today have blended into again to Roman/British society many having the same dark features being blended with the white assyrian race.
