  • Emad Mostaque is democratizing #artificialintelligence
The hedge fund manager turned entrepreneur is the founder of Stability AI, the company behind Stable Diffusion, an image-generating algorithm that creates new, never-before-seen pictures.
It’s the most advanced technology in AI, and Emad is bringing it to the masses. In this mind-blowing conversation between two friends, Emad shows Raoul how quickly AI is progressing, what that progress means for our future, and why he chose to make Stable Diffusion an open source.
This type of technology should be available to everyone in the world, Emad believes, not just corporate tech giants. His vision is AI of, by, and for the people - and with that comes great opportunity. Recorded on Wednesday, October 12, 2022.

One of my favorite moments is when Emad said: "The reality is our systems are outdated and need to be improved. What happened with crypto is they tried to create a whole new system and there's this [existing] system; the interface is where all the money is made and lost. Whereas this technology, because it can take unstructured data to structured data, can sit in our systems and extend them. They can disrupt them or they can extend them." I loved realizing that AI can sit in a system and expand it. And then I wondered, is crypto/ blockchain/ AI honestly going to suffer the same issues that businesses face when they implement something like ERP technology to improve efficiency? Or will we see AI learning code itself to fix this age old problem of connecting systems? (and of course then, because I cannot fathom after this video that AI could not mend the systemic issues after learning how to do so), what happens to software, IT, data jobs? We'll all be as tan as Raoul in no time if we can replicate all of endless and menial work that keeps businesses trapped in forward-backward loops trying to keep up with tech. I do hope AI doesn't exhaust at this very annoying most important issue of mending, restoring, revitalizing system connections!

I learned, in my programing of graphic systems >40 years ago, that by adding 1 to a graphic screen on the computer, and starting at one corner of the screen, every image that ever existed or ever will exist, can be created. Start with black, all zeros. Add 1, a single dot on the screen and so on. Simplicity! Think about it. Your camera is arranged in a rectangular array of bits with grey scales (so more bits) The problem at the time was my microprocessor speed. It would take "forever" to create every image ever. But maybe not now, with super computers. Whatever our eyes could see would be visible on the screen. Want to see the past? Want to see the future? Do this on your computer. Think about it! PS The computer could never keep up but only go so far into the future, as, after all, the computer is changing the future, its self.

If you dont mind me writing about self driving cars like you mentioned above. I live in Texas. No one drives the speed limit and everyone drives in a chaotic manner. What makes humans good drivers is intuition based on experience and visual cues..i.e. 22 year old female driving red Corvette with a cell phone in her hand is liable to make erratic moves. When driving a good driver will see that female and move away from her knowing she is at higher risk of causing an accident. 50 year old man driving totally stock pickup truck. The person least likely to drive erratically. No need to move away from him. There are hundreds of thousands of variables involved in driving. How will a autonomous vehicle make decisions in such an environment where most rules are not followed and erratic behavior from human drivers is the norm?

Many things entered my mind when I wanted to comment. The one that is big picture and Emad made relevant to point out is entropy. I've watched 3 or 4 documentories on entropy. I looked it up on Wikipedia because entropy is a complex scientific concept. Here it is in rather simple terms-
Entropy is a scientific concept, as well as a measurable physical property, that is most commonly associated with a state of disorder, randomness, or uncertainty. The term and the concept are used in diverse fields, from classical thermodynamics, where it was first recognized, to the microscopic description of nature in statistical physics, and to the principles of information theory. It has found far-ranging applications in chemistry and physics, in biological systems and their relation to life, in cosmology, economics, sociology, weather science, climate change, and information systems including the transmission of information in telecommunication.[1]
The thermodynamic concept was referred to by Scottish scientist and engineer William Rankine in 1850 with the names thermodynamic function and heat-potential.[2] In 1865, German physicist Rudolf Clausius, one of the leading founders of the field of thermodynamics, defined it as the quotient of an infinitesimal amount of heat to the instantaneous temperature. He initially described it as transformation-content, in German Verwandlungsinhalt, and later coined the term entropy from a Greek word for transformation. Referring to microscopic constitution and structure, in 1862, Clausius interpreted the concept as meaning disgregation.[3]
A consequence of entropy is that certain processes are irreversible or impossible, aside from the requirement of not violating the conservation of energy, the latter being expressed in the first law of thermodynamics. Entropy is central to the second law of thermodynamics, which states that the entropy of isolated systems left to spontaneous evolution cannot decrease with time, as they always arrive at a state of thermodynamic equilibrium, where the entropy (disorder) is highest.
Austrian physicist Ludwig Boltzmann ... introduced the concept of statistical disorder and probability distributions into a new field of thermodynamics, called statistical mechanics, and found the link between the microscopic interactions, which fluctuate about an average configuration, to the macroscopically observable behavior, in form of a simple logarithmic law, with a proportionality constant, the Boltzmann constant, that has become one of the defining universal constants for the modern International System of Units (SI).
Simply, it means that order moves to disorder. And Emad seemed to suggest AI was a part of entropy. Or that order moved to disorder as long as energy is not lost.

It's staggering how double standard Emad is, "we didn't scrape the whole internet to make the music version", "we will ask permission from EDM artists to make music in their style", while the image model pretty much based on a data set scraped from the internet (with copyright and IP) and damaging real living artists when the internet is being flooded with machine learning images. Great, what a great future!

But are we smart enough not to use it to our own demise? I’m skeptical just because we haven’t handled technology very well so far. Is THIS the singularity moment that Kurziweil has envisioned.

ACCTUALLLLY we do have an idea of how to define "sentient". Check out any interviews of Roger Penrose's on the physics of consciousness. TL;DR: it seems to be a separate phenomenon from intelligence or even thinking, and happening at a smaller order of magnitude -- quantum stuffs involving microtubules in neurons. Electronic "brains" (transistor integrated circuits) are not similar at all so I don't think that they are any more sentient than the silicon they're made of. They may still "think" that they are conscious though (if you ask them).

    Information lives in the relationships.
Nothing novel or interesting happens unless it is on the border between order and chaos.
Truth is the perfect symmetry of relationship, like a perfect sphere of infinite dimensions, it looks the same from every angle, at every scale.
Framing is about the filters employed to extract meaning from the field. Dynamic framing would be recursive feedback filters.
Meaning lives in the Goldilocks zone between the harmonic regularity of truth and the chaotic randomness of self referential noise, the boundary is fractal or a dynamic holofractal.

It seems to me that it is incumbent on my government - the UK, and as well, the governance more broadly of comparable countries, such as the USA specifically to confront an existential threat to their population - which is the line of thought that is aroused from being exposed to more facts and more contentious matters that matter.
The issue specifically is what happens to millions of blue collar folk in employment that is severely threatened by technological advances?
Any forthcoming answer will be an improvement from a deafening silence.
The advantages of technology appear to ‘assume’ that humanity benefits in the form of living longer through medical breakthroughs - this is true.
It is also true that technology is effectively replacing large swathes of human beings which means that if the human existence is extended to say a 120 odd for arguments sake, then precisely how are humans to be kept in the financial sense?
The idea that humanity coexists with staggeringly powerful and very unknowable technological advances without being in any way diminished seems implausible.
Imagine if you had 4 billion people transacting on average 50 times a day in BTC.
Further, you had an average transaction of £100. If you could in some way have 2% of every transaction literally monetised that created a pool for participating countries based on their gross figures, then that could be distributed to effectively help pay for a universal basic citizens recurring income.
So £20 trillion minus 2% = £400 billion that would swell over time to help pay for an enhanced and sustainable outcome for human beings.
The maths are irrelevant - my point is outlined, which for the avoidance of doubt, amounts to in some way an inbuilt mechanism that monetises transactions which in turn is proportionately distributed based on usage and numbers.
I think i would seriously consider having something akin to (i really do think it has come to this) frankly, a reformation type seminal moment.
The issue that confronts people, to whom i care about most, not least myself, is the sustainability of running the country (the UK) in this century based on terms and conditions of the last century.
I think this sort of sentiment will disseminate but evidently by which time some former eccentric nerd who once lived in his mothers basement will be de facto Emiratis of Humanity and all living creatures and i suppose holding all the cards.
It is staggering to think about how scary it is (it is frightening) that technology is effectively without or incompatible with (to my mind anyway) safeguards.
