Technology stocks took a dive last week with many of them falling by 5 to 10%. In this video, I explain the key metrics to look for when evaluating Indian IT Sector companies. More specifically, we shall examine the business strengths, operational efficiency and valuations of companies like Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), HCL Technologies, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, LTI-Mindtree, MPhasis, Persistent Systems and Coforge. These Indian IT companies represents the bulk of India's IT Service exports and are what we generally define as information technology stocks

Being an IT worker myself, it is astounding how you have captured the business model and the terminologies like a seasoned expert. Kudos for another well researched and well articulated presentation ! An IT services company is a different beast in itself and treating it as a conventional company is hazardous. You have rightly covered all the aspects that helps one to evaluate an IT company.
Thank you very much for your appreciation and kind endorsement. I've done 5 sectors already and its surprising when I start researching them, the one area that doesn't feature in most cases is PE ratio. However there are millions of investors who decide an investible business just on that single valuation tool (I'm sorry to say but I have seen quite a few UA-cam videos where the only point discussed is the PE ratio without a view on how strong the business model is). I am glad you found this video's content relevant and I'm happy you messaged me on this. Patting my own back now :)
@@shankarnath Yes. I concur with you on the PE bit. Most influencers only look at the company’s PE in regards to the sector PE to determine if the scrip is fairly priced. Unlike other industries, the output here is intangible and is mainly a product of putting one’s mind to work. Also, replacing one developer with another with sane skillset won’t work, as there is so much of project specific contextual knowledge involved. That’s why attrition is a big concern. You have aptly covered determinants like onsite/offshore mix, visa issues, localisation, attrition, utilisation etc., which are rarely talked about by other influencers
As per new tech
Artificial intelligence lies with elexi
Therefore I write
Shall we buy Infosys at this level?!?!
@@nice2play592 Yes you should buy at small quantities frequently (buying at dips) to advantage of a sustained decline.
Excellent video! Period. I have seen quite a few of your videos; to my mind, this one is the best. I liked it, especially, because it explained the IT business model so succinctly yet you don't miss out on any relevant detail. Your presentation skills coupled with your team's excellent video editing make your videos truly a highly enjoyable experience. All kudos to you.
Thank you very much Rajat ji for this kind appreciation and encouragement. I like sector analysis myself and I try to identify the key & relevant areas in each industry. I've covered 6-7 sectors and hopefully I can cover the top 30 sectors over the next 12 months

Informative... Good knowledge provided on IT sector... But for a individual investors it is hard nut to understand
Thank you sir
Thank you very much. Slightly difficult to understand it over a 20 minute video but request you to read up 1 annual report by this weekend (read TCS or Infosys). I'm certain you'll feel a lot more comfortable understanding the sector.
Good and detailed analysis.

Analysis what i was waiting for
Thank you Shankarji for the concise yet detailed charts of each and every parameter to not only dig into but also the analysis of Indian IT companies. I genuinely appreciate your hard work to research and formulate everything to help me out to evaluate any IT company. I’m happy that my pick Infosys (disclaimer: I’m an investor) is fairly good on most of the parameters that you have discussed in the video. I would be grateful if could make a detailed comparative review between Hindustan Foods vs VBL vs Tata Consumer Products. I want to invest in the FMCG space with a consistent 15-18% CAGR growth company. Thank you again. 🙏🙏
Thank you very much for your suggestion 🙌
Another Gem 💎
Thank you very much

Great work!
Thanks!
Informative video on the right time! This sector is under pressure now from long time after reaching its high.
I would like to know your opinion on how you see the future for the IT industry considering the AI ML and Global slowdown.
Glad you found it useful. I don't have an opinion right now on how the future of IT industry will shape up but will post an update once there is a bit more information
Thank you!
Thanku sir,back with bang
🙌
This is just gold!
Better than most of the Finance UA-camrs!
Thank you!
The biggest challenge that IT sector will face if adapting to new technologies. The success of Indian IT companies has been that they have commoditised what was considered niche skills earlier. They will need to continue to do so in face of new challenges like generative AI which will automate a lot of work that IT companies were doing. Really a good video but one will need to keep track on disruptor technologies.
Thank you! It's a good point you raise. IMO most products & services will be commoditized over time. It'll come down to which areas specific companies & countries pick .. and from what we've seen, Indian companies often pick the right horse to ride.
Thump up
Excellent
I request to future of tata elexi

Thanks for the suggestion
Shankar Sir, please make a similar industry analysis of the chemical and building materials industries in coming days.
Thank you for the suggestion

Can you please guide me? Is it the right calculation?

When I subscribed to this channel I thought Shankar is very serious guy, after seeing the thumbnail of each video there is no match for his comedy side ..
Awesome learning, its been some time now but after watching your videos I have unsubscribe all other UA-camrs who always push to sell their Stock market courses or ask to us join their paid community.
Glad you found it useful.
I found your point really intriguing but logically, UA-camrs/content creators will certainly use their own channel to offer their services (courses, paid newsletters, community etc.) to their viewers. Even I will do it at some stage because my channel is where my target audience is. And everyone does it - a stall owner will setup where the crowd is, a news channel will go where the breaking news it etc.
But what I think is really happening here is absorption i.e. as viewers & taking you as an example .. so because you are so involved in the content that some of us are offering, the mind might be taking a paid offering in the middle as a pattern break. This is like an advertisement and while the brain has become used to it when we watch it on TV or see it in a newspaper or even UA-cam ads now -- it will take a little more time for our mind to be accustomed to it when the content creator him/herself advertises his/her own products. Or atleast that's how I read into it :)
Hi Shankar, Would request if you could evaluate individual investment portfolio. It may not be to take decisions but you can rate as per your analysis.
Hi Nagaraju. Since many people are asking for it, I'm working on a paid consultation model. I'm still about 3-4 weeks from launching it.
Very Deep
As always.....💯
Thank you!
Thanks
Thank you very much! I'm happy you found the content useful and informative. Also appreciate the kind gesture :)
Glad I found this channel, Better than akshat vastava and ranade
Thank you for the appreciation.
When it comes to investing avoid taking advice from Akshat.
Ranade is a joke.
Kindly do the similar video on small cap IT STOCKS
Thank you for your suggestion!
Can you discuss what these new IT companies do? Like happiest mind, or tata elixi aur ltts. I mean I know what kinda work is done in bfsi sectors or auto automation but what about the other sectors like health, engineering or AI?
Thank you for the suggestion. I'll try analysing them and post an update
excellent detailed video. this is very valuable for all of us invested in IT stocks and seeing their value erode at present. my key takeaway is to look at companies which are future focused in terms of preparing for AI and AI- Modeling tasks. and keeping attrition levels under control. Thanks, Shankar!!
Most welcome, Ravi ji. Glad you found the video useful and informative. I'm sure 2-3 years from now, the needle would have moved and it's possible that new metrics would have replaced some of the older ones. E.g. today we see employee strength as an important factor but who knows, 5 years from now when a lot is automated, these companies might need less employees and the patents they hold might be the more important things. Yes, you're right .. tracking the numbers and tracking the landscape are both important
Mr Nath there is one NFO from Mirae Assets. Equity Allocator Fund of Fund. Plz guide on this.
Apologies. I don't analysis NFOs because there is nothing to analyse.
Yes, there is just a story & PPT that that fund house gives but other than that :
a) we don't know the historical performance,
b) we don't know the portfolio
c) we don't know how they have responded during bull, bear, crashes
etc.
Can you please clarify more on how did you find the data on the split between Fixed Price and T&M IT contracts for companies? Also, how do we keep track on the number of customers for the IT companies?
You can find the information in the company's annual report.
As an example - please examine page 237 of Infosys's 2021-22 annual report. There's a line that says: The percentage of revenue from fixed-price contracts for each of the years ended March 31, 2022 and March 31, 2021 is approximately 53%.
Again, for number of customers - the annual report has the information. Please refer to page 44 of the annual report. The number of clients is 1,741 for FY2021-22
👍
I think @15.40 you meant 7L /3.5L per quarter. Just Check.
I think ER&D too would see big correction.
Yes, this data is quarterly. I forgot to add that line
IT companies need to adopt AI tools to reduce the staff and make them profitable.
Can anyone tell when will the IT stocks will rise again? I'm stucked in infosys
When United states risk of looming ression ends or fed reduces rates , causing Usa companies to start spending on IT again. Cheers!
very self explanatorry
How do we get these numbers on yearly basis
I use multiple sources depending on the kind of information. Some of them include:
1. Screener.in for financial information
2. Annual report & investor presentation for company information
3. Earnings transcript for guidance on EBITDA, topline & any challenges faced by the company
4. Research reports (I listed a few of them in the video's description)
5. Google news and articles searched via Google
6. UA-cam videos (I didn't find relevant videos for IT services sector but other times, I do find 2-3 good videos)
Is there any known reason why LTI Mindtree PE ratio valuation is so high compared to other industry players, and their own longterm pe ratio.
LTI and Mindtree merged to form LTIMindtree and screener seems to have buggy P/E ratio for them ever since. The correct EPS is about Rs. 163 and hence the P/E works out to be roughly 25.6. Till they fix the bug, gather the EPS from a research report and calculate the P/E based on EPS given in the report.
This is a paid level content.
Thanks for providing the same.
Glad you liked it and I'm happy you appreciate & respect valuable content. Next version, I'll definitely make it paid
@@shankarnath With this kind of quality and value, I would happily buy it
Salaries of employees cost 54% of total expenditure of IT companies. IT companies need to reduce salaries by 50 - 60% to make them more profitable and reduce the PE.
no one works for IT then it is very stressful job only perk to employees is salary.
It will not be be right on my side, if I don't thank you for the video...
Most welcome
@Shankar Nath. DXC is now the official Digital Transformation partner for Manchester United not HCL anymore. You might want to correct on that one.
Thanks for letting me know.
You said it will continue to frow for a “few more year” can u please define “fee more years”. TY
This decade atleast .. so until 2030 atleast.
@@shankarnath ty. The reason I’m asking is, the salaries in India have gone up tremendously so the cost advantage that the Indian IT companies had is going down. It’s still there but not so much
@@AP-qu8sl Actually I mentioned parts of that in the video. So, two points:
1. The average cost per employee is still 3.5-3.6 lakhs and it has been around that number for many years now. As 40% of the work IT Service companies do is still on a T&M basis, any increase in cost of employees will be adequate absorbed without affecting the margins
2. The use of AI, automation etc. is delineating the revenue growth with the employee growth. I think as this trend grows, IT companies will make more money without having to put in as many employees
Ofcourse this point 2 is a double edged sword and there can be some disruption aswell but on the face of it, it seems we Indians will be the one doing that disruption.
@@shankarnath ty so much for your thoughts and responses. I’m invested in IT sector mutual funds and I’m having second thoughts to move to more diversified funds instead because of this. Of course they are all in red right now but I’m thinking if I should continue long term with my SIP or move towards more diversified funds.
AI will change things for IT companies in India in the next 5 - 10 years
Does HCL tech is a good bet for long term?
Apologies Dr. Keval. I haven't evaluated HCL Tech individually, this is more of a sector analysis with focus on which variables one should level their decision-making on. I'll circle back once I am done with a separate analysis of HCL Tech
@@shankarnath okay thank you

27000 startups how many are profitable 😂😂. Don't celebrate startup their are just burning money. For me simple of resources are given to any sector in excsess than comes the time of balancing it take a decade same happen with fossil fuels , hardware now software so it is over. Just wait for it come to pennies and then it might become some good investment going forward as of now how things stand their are very difficult to survive unless they are strt layoffs and salary cut
So in such scenario lot of loan default from HDFC and also the FMCG will feed their junks to whom, because these IT guys drive their supplies . So it will also drop to its 50% also many more industries will follow. Saying that it will become penny is very easy but if it does it will screw up every other market.
Sir hum Bharat desh me rehte hai to please hindi me video banaye taaki chote se chote insaan bi samaj sake 🙏
