What makes this so tragic for me, is that Christopher Reeve was literally living the dream prior to his accident. He flew planes, he sailed boats, he was the quintessential "man" by every measure. Did I forget to mention he was an actor too? He wasn't just some couch potato who drank himself into oblivion every day like many people do. He lived life on the edge. He was a risk taker and for the most part those risks were very rewarding. Christopher Reeve will always be my personal hero. I hope some day I can accomplish half of the things he did in his lifetime.

My mom and I were near DC when Reeve had his accident visiting my sister for mom's birthday. We spent the weekend following the story that was on all the news as Culpepper and the hospital wasn't far away. A couple of years later mom bought his book and sent it to me after she read it. In August 2001mom was visiting my sister's who now lived in Boulder CO and stood on a bed in the middle of the night to turn on a ceiling fan, lost her balance and fell, hitting her neck on a dresser. She became a C-3,4,5 incomplete quad. It was Reeve's book that was a starting point in looking for help from the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation and their guidance for the next 14 years along with others. The progress that's been made since is astonishing.
I'm pleased you are still here. Mom died in 2017 at the age of 85. She knew what was ahead once she realized she was paralyzed and she never recovered mentally or emotionally. She said she wished she hadn't tried to get help that night. It's not easy to adjust to such a drastic change in life.

sjoanne brown. Notice how they were holding the horse's raines WAY too tightly? Let them loose, lean forward but not too far, like you become one with the horse & biggest thing.... TRUST THE HORSE!!
The horse is jumping, you aren't. If you fall let go of the raines.
I'm so glad you haven't been hurt & I hope it stays that way.
Before I ride I always walk beside my horse & softly talk to him or her & make sure the animal is well fed & watered & I bring apples or suger. There have been times I'd just walk in the fenced in grass yard & sit under a tree & let the horse have a breather awhile.
I like the horse to be my friend & visa versa, I don't treat it like a car. Native Americans taught me how to be with horses & the horses are the ones whove5really taught me how to ride.
Nice to meet another person who loves horses.

I hate to say this but he was warned. I rode at the 2nd to last barn he was riding out of and he was warned that he was pushing himself and his horse to do things that neither were ready for. Nobody wanted to work with him there, or be in the ring when he was riding because he was in general not being safe and refused to listen.
So even if you went back, you'd just be another voice telling him to stop and slow down, and he probably would have ignored you.

The reason why Christopher suffered that injury to his cervical neck area was both his hands were tangled up in the reins so as a normal reflex a person does if falling to the ground is to put their arms in front to break their fall, Christopher couldn't and landed head first causing the serious cervical neck injury. It was quite hard to hear this when it happened and what he went through subsequently and his wife passing soon after Chris.

I remember when this happened. It was tragic and may or may not have been prevented. You don't know if it was a rider error or not. There are risks in pretty much everything that you do. You can get in your car and get hit and killed by a drunk driver. You can be walking crossing a road and get hit and killed by someone that is not paying attention. I ride myself but do not jump. There are all levels of risk when riding horses. Jockeys take a risk everytime they race. Eventers-cross-country take a high risk. There are different levels. Christopher Reeve was an amateur but it can happen to all levels of riders. The bone-head reporter asks such a stupid question to Mr Mann. You mean this could happen to you????? an Olympic rider????? You can get hurt riding a bicycle. Even though Mr. Reeve was hurt badly and left him wheelchair bound, he did have the money and family support that gave him the ability to share his story and establish his foundation for stem cell research. He was well loved by many and his memory lives on.

what a shame! Christopher was a great actor and a wonderful man. I love riding horses too but am sometimes skeptical because I already have spinal subluxation so when I ride I end up having to use a cane to walk until I am able to make it to the chiropractor and I have just turned 25. Horses are fun but so unpredictable. I wish Superman was still here though 😔😢😭

They seriously need to do a better job of securing their riders so that accidents like this don't happen. Even if they can't make it so their riders aren't firmly on the backs of their horses, they will at least be able to avoid suffering any permanent injuries.

    • @sophiaschommer7337
      @sophiaschommer7337 Рік тому +1

I dont think that is possible. Jumping at this level requires so much movement from the rider. You can't be strapped down on the saddle otherwise you would be dead weight to the horse. This would actually make it far harder not only on the horse but also the rider. I would imagine it could also result in even worse accidents, since you wouldn't be able to have a chance to fall cleanly. It could also actually result in spinal bruising for both the horse and the rider. When you ride a horse at anything more than a walk you are not really "sitting" on the horse but rather elevating off the horse in time with their movement so your butt doesn't get pounded from the saddle by the movement of the horse. Which is why you need to grip stongly with your thighs to stay on a horse. (There is far more to it, but that is a very rough understanding). A seatbelt would hinder that movement and cause spinal discomfort for you and the horse. There are actually seatbelt designs out there for saddles. But the ones I have seen have been for trail riding on western saddles. Which is a completely different type of riding and saddle than show jumping. They only walk their horses, most of the time, on trails.

In his film "Somewhere in time" there are many scenes with horses (in one the horse start to walk before the time, and he says "wait for me", in another he is tied, so he can't move in a barn with horses). At the end of the film he is carried by two men, and he looks like a paralytic.
Shortly before the accident he made a film where he is a wheelchair user.
Of course many will say: just coincidences.
