Blue Yeti vs Shure SM7B Sound Comparison

- I know this isn't exactly a fair comparison, but I think some might be surprised at how good the Yeti fairs. Now, I'm no audio engineer, so a lot of the nuance of different mics is lost on me, but I'd wager that a lot of you aren't either. And that's kind of the point. The SM7B is kind of a status purchase and the Yeti is kind of looked down on as a beginner mic (or even a toy). But, I think the Yeti is perfectly adequate for a lot of people.

Phenomenal comparison and probably one of the most comprehensive and professionally done that I've seen out of the lot of them. Thanks for taking the time to make this!
Um...thank you! That's very nice of you to say
I loved your review!, the curve is pretty similar so everything sums up in the environment noise. Thank you for your review.
Thank you. And thanks for the analysis. That sums things up quite nicely
HAHA LOVE this video. The starting babble about these unknown mics is golden! Also, solid tunes! Would love to know what tune played at the beginning. Glad I stumbled upon your channel my friend!
Hey! Thank you. It's always hard to gauge what's an acceptable amount of jibber jabber. Most people insist you get right to the point! The track is "Nocturnal Jam" by Sarah, the Illstrumentalist, courtesy of Epidemic Sound
Great video man! Thank you!
that’s a great video ! Thanks a lot man
Glad you liked it!
can you do a video on editing vocals for the blue yeti to get a more rich and crisp sound?
Can you show us how to make the Yeti sound similar to the SM7B?
This video is a banger. Also Captain Cabinets, trapped in cabinets, can he get out, will he get out? I have a Yeti nano and I use it in a noisy office close mic style with a clown nose windscreen. Cardioid pattern does OK for noise rejection and I'm able to keep the gain low by being so close therefore sound quality is good enough for my purposes (tutorials for high school classes).
Lol. That cat is like, "I own this house."
They only want the warm parts. The HVAC vents. The top of your computer. The seat where your butt was....
I love you Phil. 1k subs is a joke. You have at least 100K
Thank you! I don't think I deserve any more subs than I currently have. It's a process and I have a lot to learn. But I appreciate the vote of confidence!
Thanks for the video it really helped in my time of need,im looking to purchase one of these for recording hypnosis and meditation tracks and wanted the yeticaster but I love shure products, im still on the fence, Phillip, push me over one side please and help me decide.
Well, Shure has the SM57, 58, the MV7, and the SM7B. If you really like Shure, then you have options
I love how huge your cat is.
I know! We try to monitor his food but he just keeps growing
Hello! Great review! :D
May I ask what chair do you use and do you still use it? Is it comfy?
Thanks!
Hi, thank you. I do still use it. It's a Tempur Pedic office chair that I bought at a local Office Depot or Office Max. I think it's the TP9000. It's pretty comfortable. I've had it for about 5 years now
@@PhillipRPeck thank you very much!
I have a yeti x and am always complemented on my mic quality. I was considering buying a shure sm7b because mics are cool, lol, but honestly I can’t hear a difference…
There's a clear difference between them. Not on this video, cause his room seems to be acoustically treated and quiet. If your room has any kind of echo or if you have any kind of background noise, SM7B is far superior to Yeti. You can still hear the difference on this video, but its not that big here.
shure forces you to use a pop filter, blue yeti x doesnt, meaning asmr is clearer on yeti
@@Ps-we3pp you know you can take it off on the sm7b right?
@@DemilOfficial he also doesn't know that blue yeti has a foam included inside the grill thing (also in asmr videos a lot of people even add a second foam on top of it. pop filter doesn't have anything to do with the mic being more popular for asmr or not)
I ordered Shure mic, yay!
Congrats. It's a fantastic microphone
The Blue yeti is a much more suitable choice for me because I get a microphone with good sound quality at an attractive price, which makes the male voice sound warmer, to be used only for playing games, for push to talk use. My only concern is that it will pick up too much noise from the unit, the birdsong outside the window shouldn't bother anyone, so if I use an arm and pad, will it be much less noisy?
I would highly recommend a mic arm for the Blue Yeti too.
You can even see, well hear, in the video how bad the sound is if the mic pics up vibrations from the table.
If you want any upgrade from a Blue Yeti in PC usage it would be the mic stand for me that and a pop filter.
@@VirtuelleWeltenMitKhan i think a lot recently about this what mic should i choose and that's how I've found a comparison of Shure SM58 and blue yeti and honestly idk which one should i pick. Yeti sounds good, warm but picks up too many noises and Shure is not that bad it can be useful for singing
I have not watched all of the video yet, but I don't think you mentioned the different pattern selection on the Blue Yeti. Not sure if the SM7B has this or not. This does change how your directional test sounds.
I probably didn't mention it in this video because I never use it in any mode other than the cardioid pattern. But you're right. That is one party trick of the Blue Yeti that most microphones in its class don't offer
6:42 the cat is back
I have a Blue Yeti, and I don't how the hell is it possible to make it sound so well. I've tried so many things, and it never got to your quality of recording. What the actual hell is going on....
I get that a lot, and I feel your pain, there were a lot of times in the past when I thought it sounded terrible. The key is getting it close to you and keeping the gain as low as possible. You want the mic to pick up as little of the room noise as possible while keeping your voice at a good level
@@PhillipRPeck this what I do already to keep it on a reasonable quality level and I STILL can't get the right quality. I also have to common issue (with Blue Yeti's) of digital hiss, which is hard to remove with de-noise tools.
I will upgrade to the Shure SM7B, as soon as I can. It doesn't only come down to difficulty working with the microphone. I want to step up my production process. Great video by the way.
Sorry that the Yeti isn't working. The SM7B is obviously great and I'm sure you'll love it. Thanks for the kind words and the sub
@@InfectedSquid If you have low gain, put your blue yeti "volume" level in windows sound settings to 80. If it's 100 it has that hissing sound. I have my gain on yeti maxed out and volume level in sound settings 20.
i use voicemeeter banana, i tweaked it and it sounds immaculate now
Shure SM7B vs Blue Yeti Professional ,this is a difference close to money
For me it’s not about the quality, for me it’s the fact that when I used my yeti it’s pics up, me sliding a pen across the desk, it’ll pick up me breathing, etc etc
Dynamic mics are definitely prone to doing that. But if you can get the mic as close to you as possible and keep the gain low, maybe you can minimize the distracting sounds
Reduce your volume and gain, a LOT, my gain is at about 1/8 turn and volume at 1/4 turn. I have a Yeti and was thinking of going to a shure, but been amazed by the Yeti. I have a pet pigeon that constantly flies to my shoulder or buzzes my head, and it always worries me that the wing flapping is going to be caught, but it never has. I had a cold once, and had to keep clearing my throat, as quietly as I could, and it never picked it up either, keyboard clicks, mouse clicks, people using power tools outside, no issues... I also have a air purifier on high blowing on me as my apt gets very hot, and no issues, however.. I do have it in a boom arm on a separate table as I use for other things, plus I have a windscreen on it, along with a pop filter, and I speak very close, sometimes nearly touching the mic. I USE to have issues, but they went away after reducing gain and volume. I also use Logitech G-Hub, though have no profiles applied.
no one gonna talk about the burp? :)
I didn't feel any difference... And I'm listening through my sennheiser headset, hd 598
Sarcasm. It's everywhere.
Can you do a video on EQ man? A lot of us ,"Normies", per se lol....are learning about GPU and CPUs in a computer. But i know jack crap about EQ or what software. What do you use with the yeti?
Also bro, put some affiliate links in your description....make that paper. I was a power seller on ebay and had to learn how to market myself cross platform and my sales went up by 13%. Id put vids in my ebay description to get buyers confidence etc. If you need help for free with that stuff, id gladly do it for free for you in exchange for your knowledge on audio and editing in DaVinci etc. If not, that's fine. Id default then to my first paragraph. Lol. Have a good day man.
Don't I have links in the description?
Thanks for the comments, advice, and offers of assistance. I'm kind of phasing out of UA-cam so I don't know if I'll get around to making a video on EQ but I know there are a lot of good creators out there who are way more qualified than I am who have made videos about it.
If I'm recording a USB mic like the Yeti, I usually record into Adobe Audition, but I also might record into Resolve if I need to fill in some VO directly into a video project.
If you have any specific questions on audio or video editing, I'm happy to help to the best of my abilities.
‘Completely unknown microphones’
🤣🤣
You've heard of 'em?
@@PhillipRPeck I appreciate you doing this one as this kind of answers in more detail the question I asked on the last video.
Basically, you need a Mic and cable for USB mic and the price is pretty much right there. For the XLR you almost need to double the cost with the added extras needed to make it work properly.
And it also seems you can't skimp on the cables or try to do an XLR to USB cable with a dynamic mic. That seems to be a waste if you get the dynamic mic setup.
@@KMSchriver I'd never even heard of an XLR to USB adapter until a few days ago. I really don't know how well that would work but I'm a bit intrigued. I think to go the XLR/audio interface route you have to be really invested in, willing to spend time in, and really be interested in audio. As opposed to just wanting something good quality but also just move on and do other things (the USB route) ... if that makes sense
@@PhillipRPeck In case you didn't know, those are the two most popular condenser microphones in the world,
BTW I personally prefer the Yeti over the SM7B, for me, it just sounds better.
@@shalevhaham Thanks Shalev, I was just joking about them being unknown! I can appreciate that you prefer the Yeti; the SM7B can sound a bit muffled and bottom heavy
The Cat Tho... 🤣🤣🤣
More cats please!
The Shure mic had great noise rejection. wow. The Yeti is a good solution for most people...it's a budget-friendly option. Clearly, the Shure with the Cloudlifter CL-Z would be a superior option but at a much higher price tag.
Yeah, the SM7B doesn't hear much unless you're right on it
Shure SM7B vs Blue Yeti Professional ,this is a difference close to money
Literally can’t tell the difference in sound... I guess buy the Yeti for $300 less
Try wearing earbuds and you’ll notice the difference better
Buy anything but the yeti its awful
@@Anthony0855 yeah I ended up buying the shure sm7b with the cloud lifter and GO XLR mini.
@@masongomes71 i got the scarlet 2i2 3rd gen instead of xlrmini i dont know the difference between them i just hope it works okay
@@Anthony0855 I actually bought that one originally because it was a tad bit cheaper and was also recommended.
Let me know how it is as well as do you stream or is it for something else?
Apples and Oranges!
Peanut butter and bananas! Wait, what are we doing?
@@PhillipRPeck Still can be worth questioning! Really is a good vid!
I will never buy a blu yeti again. Crap mics that work for a month or so and just don't anymore
have mine for like 11 years, droped it on the floor like 8 time, still working
Background music is so annoying
When you’re old enough, vote democrat
@@PhillipRPeck best possible response tbh
