Jealousy? I doubt it. First, is the guy next to him playing a Bb or an A or Eb? More importantly, he has to be happy for the orchestra just pulling it off. I’m sure he is like a airplane copilot in a difficult take off. Just happy to be airborne . 😃,

@@robkunkel8833: The clarinetist next to him is holding an Eb clarinet. Four clarinets are called for in the Ferde Grofe score: Bb, Eb, Alto, and Bass. The score also calls for other reed instruments including an oboe, and on tour with Gershwin the oboist was a young Mitch Miller.

What I find amazing is his persistence in getting the final note on pitch, which momentarily seemed in jeopardy. If you compare it to the “inventor” of that clarinet glissando, Ross Gorman, who played it while warming up in a rehearsal while Ferde Grofe was scoring Gershwin’s piano version for Whiteman’s orchestra and at the latter’s insistence kept it in the score and recorded it in 1924, the top tones are played faster but are entirely on pitch. Even the legendary Benny Goodman “squeaked” in that opening section when he was the guest soloist of the NBC Symphony under the baton of the volcanic Arturo Toscanini.
