      Honestly AC Testament is probably guaranteed 2nd, Eddie was just really fucked up
      That being said, the nerf is real. Yeah it's a weird sidegrade where the character changed a lot, but AC Testament is super lame and uninteractive. The gap between tiers is just lower in +R.

      @@BlackDT Idk, Zappa also does some pretty nasty things, and when I watch good Baiken players she looks utterly cracked. Testament is easily the most popular out of all those, and easiest to abuse the power of though. I personally think the main contest is Zappa, but it really comes down to consistency versus explosive potential

    Testament's tier list history, especially in the segments shown in the video, has always been pretty funny to me.
    Went from "1-9 vs half the cast" tier (ML) -> bottom tier (X) -> low tier (Reload) -> absolute warcrime tier (AC/R+).

    Pretty interesting video honestly, I am real curious about your other videos. Im a big Potemkin fan and while I do know how fucking broken he is right now in Strive I won't lie I do miss a lot of his gameplay from +R, seriously I'd trade stuff like Garuda Impact for 2S with vacuum any day or Flicks working on Supers again anyday! Heck I even like Judge Gauntlet (though I wish it was buffed). Though his journey took quite a while for him to get fully viable and not so clunky, I believe around Slash is when we would finally see him the powerful yet really fun Grappler that we got in AC/+R, before that he had tools and damage but they weren't all that great... too bad that Xrd took the wrong lesson and decided to inspire on the crappy Reload version. At the very least Potemkin in Strive generally was pretty solid, though I do wish his gameplay was a bit more fun.
    Oh one suggestion if you are ever interested! There are some oddly niche versions of a few X/XX characters that maybe later on you could look into, mostly out of curiosity, those being from X GBA having exclusive EX and GG versions (The first one is unique to that version and different from the EX of the XX games like Potemkin being able to run and air dash and having a insta slidehead and the latter is a mix between the ML and X versions with X characters getting a bunch of new tools and changes, like Dizzy getting Dragon Install), GGX SLash (First game to have Order Sol and ABA in the main games and was mostly led by Mori instead of Daisuke, which from what I heard might be more unbalanced then AC) and X 1.5 (a rerelease of X on arcades that adds a few things from XX to X and some unique ones like Potemkin being able to Roll)
    And while it is a touchy subject, apparently Testament was always planned to be agender, according to interviews with Daisuke from back in 2002: "They're androgynous. In fact, they've transcended human existence. Just like me." That and a lot of other information like the character polls in the ArcSys 25th anniversary character book with them being in the male AND female character polls. The Guilty Gear Wiki has better explanation to these things (not the Fandom one) But in a nutshell, the official translations for those games just were pretty mediocre, quite a few details were cut or forgotten and some weird additions like Johnny's last name for a long while was thought to be Sfondi, but it was a mistranslation along with the whole plot of Chipp wanting to be a President actually being a thing since Missing Link.
    Anyway I look forward to seeing more of your videos and for whatever comes next!

      One of my friends who plays these games is a pot player too, and even though he mostly plays casually he also prefers the tools available in +R. I think that version of pot created a really satisfying gameplay loop, more so than most other versions.

    I started playing STRIVE because literally my first FG char was Bridget was going in. But coming in and playing her reworked kit, I felt unsatisfied. Testament tho, hit all the right spots for me, I love characters with long range and "viscous" attacks that can play mid range (ie. Eliza from Skullgirls), I didnt like the trap based gameplay in ACC but Im loving the fundamentals based zoning they offer in Strive (and is a good "teacher" character for me who has bad BAD neutral). I love Testament and I hope they stay this way

    • @Garharu
      @Garharu  8 днів тому

      It's nice that these new versions can appeal to new people, but I can't help but wish that sometimes they would just make these versions entirely new characters rather than reworking an old one who had an iconic kit. I enjoy the gameplay of both, and would still like to see a variant of the trap based ACR gameplay in Strive which just makes the whole thing a bit bittersweet.

      I have a somewhat similar experience. My all-time favourite FG character is Reload Bridget, with +r one being... Still fun, although a bit hard for my casual taste, especially with all the craziness that you have to deal with in that installment of the game. I do love to play neutral tho, and my favourite gameplay loop is basically "win neutral, set up some bullsh*t, reset to neutral after bullsh*t". Old Bridget, with her distinct lack of reliable knockdowns and an extremely diverse setplay-centric gameplay just ticked all the boxes for me. Strive one feels really repetative in comparison.
      Testament though... I like their new style, and while some portions of their gameplan can feel a bit repetative as well, it's not nearly as bad as you rarely even get to play them agains most of the roster)

    Great restrospective. I am a huge fan of Testament in both +R and STRIVE, and the variety they bring to my character picking in either game. While I do have issues with Test's STRIVE version (mainly just from a power level standpoint and being 'too fair,' like you said), I ultimately agree with your conclusion.

    I really like Strive Testament. I can see why people who played them in +r would be upset with how different they are, but as someone who had started with Xrd and mainly plays Strive, I think they are a really fun character. They are a really simple, intuitive, and fun character that still has a lot of room to explore, I love their combos, their setups, and how they navigate neutral. Ngl, I have always been a fan of Testament conceptually, but I have never been someone that likes to play a playstyle like Test's. As a Sin main on strive, I'm the most grateful about the Strive rework because it probably makes things way easier considering my game plan is just to land a hit and try to keep pressure, but I wish they give Testament some kind of trap, specially the tree could work well on Strive as long as they don't give the powered version of the move (although it could be a Super, and it could apply Stain to fit with the current version of Testament).

    • @Garharu
      @Garharu  20 днів тому +1

      That could be pretty cool, and that's always the difficult part with reworks, especially ones as comprehensive as Testament's. After the rework is done there are going to be players who prefer both versions of the character, meaning that you're likely to disappoint a decent portion of the character fanbase no matter what in future versions.

I agree with your general take on how they were reworked. Plus r Testament has soo many fun options and tools, that they are my favorite version in terms of gameplay (I say this is the case for plus r characters in general, but specially them), but is a understandable rework in strive
    I did also enjoy their development design and characterization wise. Like it's pretty different from their old attitude, but it tracks with the development they were having, nice they can just chill now

    @Hastings727 19 днів тому +1

    Hey, great video! I think these sorts of retrospectives are sorely lacking in the modern FGC and you did a very thorough job explaining every minute aspect of the character, which I appreciate! You remind me somewhat of the old school series "guilty bits" in terms of the voice (before novriltaka nuked their reputation by being a jagoff on twitter).
    A suggestion for future videos would be more emphasis on editing. I don't think there's anything wrong with long form explanation style videos, but I do think that when you're talking about a specific move, you should show the move more specifically in the background footage. It can also cut down on video length and sharpen parts of your commentary. It's also not to say that you shouldn't use background footage that's just filler at certain points, it's valuable to keep the viewer engaged, especially after you've explained what the move does in a controlled environment e.g. training mode.
    Last thing I will say, i mentioned the old series "guilty bits" before and honestly, I think that's an idea you should "strive" for in the future (hahaha puns) whenever Strive finally reaches its final version. Your voice is pleasant to listen to and you're very knowledgeable. If you were to combine that with shorter form video formats and smart editing (i recall RemyHobo and their GGST Anji videos), you'd make some very good stuff!

    • @Garharu
      @Garharu  19 днів тому +1

      I'll try to remember to check those out for some inspiration. I made an attempt to throw up background footage of a given move being useful when I was talking about it, but with this character there were a lot of times in my gameplay where I just couldn't make good use of a move, or at least not over and over again for a good showcase. That said I did notice that and want to try and force some better situations for the sake of footage. Thanks for the feedback!

    I am a new gg player, but i prefer the old design. Its actually pretty cool to make a non-binary character due for them being transformed into a gear - and as for what i heard, the english translation used the he/him pronouns because industry in that epoch wasn't so acceptable with queer characters - and in his music theme its used all pronouns, its quite cool for him being nom binary because "they transcend human's norms". But i think that the redesign was unnecessary, i miss the old testament (even tho i never played that epoch) because his aura was crazyyyy, it fit the character and the lore of being biologically a boy and surgically transformed into a gear (maybe removing his genitalia because it wasn't necessary and Making them stronger, faster and more agile in an inhuman way). I prefer the old testament, because it was the one who makes more sense etc. As i said, him being non-binary and the "explanation" for this is actually quite cool but about the appearance aspect... Just no :/, they could make him elegant and still having that aura, vibe and design
