  • Just like in previous years, we are continuing with the popular topic of a "Poor man's food plot." This year, Bill chooses a site near a bedding area and destination food source. This plot will act as a staging plot for the deer as they come in and out of the bedding. Bill also discusses an option for bigger equipment and bigger fields; the Genesis drill from RTP Outdoors. Lastly, Jared heads to his farm to deploy trail cameras and discusses the Cuddelink system that cuts down on intrusion when checking cameras.

    How do you keep the deer off the brassicas when they start coming up? I threw out clover this past spring and it barely made it out of the ground. I'm trying to see how the food plot even gets to the point that it could last through the season since it seems like it would take a lot longer to mature and the deer don't seem to be too patient. I'd really like to try it for next yr. Thanks for the off season videos. Makes it more interesting to see the work behind reward.

    I have been looking at those cameras for a while but nice to see somebody actually using them to hear real feedback about them. What kind of battery life have you been getting out of them and how many cameras can you link together? I run wireless cameras on my further alway spots, but see a huge benefit of these cameras for some of my local spots.

      Yeah we've seen a number of benefits to the system as well. Most of the models that I have take D batteries, and that results in longer battery life compared to AA's. Combine that with the CuddePower, and I think these will last almost the entire hunting season. It looks like 15 remote cameras can be linked to a home camera. If you had more than that, you could just create two home cameras. -Jared

    Definatly spray before, I tilled up a small area and planted clover, came back 2 weeks later and the grass was 2 foot tall with clover just starting to sprout

      You on correct Caleb. Give it a few days after spraying for the herbicide to start to work before tilling. That way you kill the root and prevent regrowth.

    Awesome video Bill! I noticed you mentioned Multiflora Rose. Unfortunately our property as a TON of it. Would you recommend removing this invasive all together or leaving some in strategic places for cover? The stuff is nasty and has a tendency to take over when we open up the canopy. Just curious to your opinion on the stuff. Keep up the great content!

      Jake, I would leave pockets of it here and there. It is useless really, for deer other than to provide a dense cover they can hide behind and having thick ground cover like that makes it easier for you to sneak to and from your stands without being seen too. A few patches here and there is fine, an entire forest of it is not good. -Bill

    Do you actually plant commercial ag to help fund the farm? Or is it strictly for deer forage? Just curious

    • @MidwestWhitetailVideos
      @MidwestWhitetailVideos  4 роки тому +1

      There is about 75 to 100 acres of commercial ag on the farm, depending on the year. -Bill

    What did you broadcast after the burn? Looked like wheat? Before clover

    • @MidwestWhitetailVideos
      @MidwestWhitetailVideos  6 років тому +1

      It was probably fertilizer. I generally hit it with a good dose of fertilizer, sometimes pelleted lime, if the pH is low and then the seed (usually clover). It is not a bad idea, however, to add wheat or oats. Problem with those seeds is their size. They are harder to get good seed to soil contact with those larger seeds when just broadcasting them. Good when you till first, but not so good with a simple Poor Man's Plot. -Bill

    Bill could you give us a $-$ amount your talking about? Just trying to gauge the expense for a 1/4 to 1/2 acre doing what your doing with the same type of material. Thanks - Jim

      You are looking at probably $30 for chemicals (which will last a few years) and $40 for fertilizer, another $30 for seed. $100 max. That is probably on the high end. Good luck. -Bill

      Bill thanks for the quick response. Best of luck. Maybe we'll have a G5 or DoubleG4 here in GA.

    At what point do you think technology will take the fun out of hunting? I mean how many cameras do you need? Why not just put a gps collar on all your deer lmao

    • @MidwestWhitetailVideos
      @MidwestWhitetailVideos  6 років тому +7

      I think everyone will draw their own line on that. At least I hope they do. Everyone's situation is different. For me, I love running trail cameras because of what you can learn about deer in general, not only hunting strategy. It adds to the fun, it doesn't take it away. And cameras for me are also a time saver. I wouldn't run as many cameras if I was able to go out and scout all the time. One thing I know for sure though, if I had GPS collars on deer, I wouldn't be hunting them. But bottomline, I think everyone should do what they want. -Jared

      Running cameras for me is a way to continue the hunting process in the off season.....if i plan to pull cards on the weekend im excited all week to see if the big 10 showed up or if the drop tine buck that a few have seen walked by my camera.....i love the whole process and everything related to hunting. I dont care if you have 10 cameras per acre its still very hard to kill a mature buck. Using trailcams is very diff than GPS locations of animals....not sure how you make that comparison....if youve seen any of MW episodes you can see that they know what they are doing and take big bucks yearly.....dont hate....

      Yea I enjoy seeing the deer progress and see what time they move through out the year I also like having multiple pictures of bucks I kill if lucky enough
