    Yes! PTL! I love how you're so brave for taking on your dreams instead of just keeping your head down and surviving day to day. I know you haven't figured it all out, but that's okay! No one has! I can't wait to see more content on this channel. I know you've already taught me so much about my finances (through this channel and off) and it's made such a huge impact in my life for the better. Can't wait for others to benefit from all of your hard work and experiences!

      What does it mean when it’s your 2nd week at work and you’ve been kind of nervous because you’re new to the job but you ask one of your trainers and she says your doing great and she asks “how long have you been here, since last week?” “I reply “yes since last week” and she says “yeah you’re doing really good”. But she has given more work to the one that has been there for 7 months and the guy who’s been there for 1 month, and not me…. Does that mean she doesn’t think I’m ready for that amount of work? I’m literally in the same boat. I have worked for the same public accounting firm for 4 years now am an a senior accountant. I was fresh out of college when I first started working here and noticed right away that this wasn’t for me. The stress is so much and it gives me severe anxiety. Now that I am a few years in I have tried to put my foot down a bit more to have a better work life balance but I think that people have this expectation that I will be able to put in the extra hours and do everything right away because that’s how I have always been. I am exhausted and looking to leave public accounting

    • @FinancialMatter
      @FinancialMatter  2 роки тому +18

      Hey Kenicke - yes definitely agree with you. The times I had the most difficulty with others was when I was trying to separate work from my personal life. I was in the "in" group if I put in the crazy hours or if I was the most dedicated worker in the office. When I begin to prioritize life outside of work, that's when the problems started to occur. I even worked for a firm where we had "mandatory hours" during busy seasons. For instance we would have to work 55-60 chargeable hours. This highlighted the fact that the focus was on quantity of hours and not efficiency. Because this was a standard, I decided to leave public accounting. I don't know when the best time for you to leave is but definitely continue to see where you want to be in 5-10 years and if your current workplace aligns with your values.

    Holy COW, we have the exact same career progression! I did two years in B4 and then moved to a mid sized firm. After getting more free time, I’ve also realized that I just can’t do public anymore, and I don’t think that it’s any better in industry. It seems like I’m burning out every couple of months, and it’s really not sustainable. It feels like I’ve lost the first three years of my post-college life, suffered a lot health wise, and I don’t want this future for myself. I’m looking to reset into a field that treats its workers better and compensates them better, too. I dont understand why some companies let you work overtime to finish the bookkeeping.
    I finish the bookkeeping from yesterday, in the morning of today and today’s bookkeeping, in the morning of tomorrow..
    I work in a family business as the finance person. So its flexible for me.

    Hi I've learned a lot from your videos! I have taken Principles of Financial Accounting and I am taking Principles of Managerial Accounting now but I don't really feel like what I am learning sounds anything like what accountants here on youtube do. Did you also take those classes and if so do you remember what they were like?

    • @FinancialMatter

      In the public accounting space, most people focus on either tax accounting or auditing. However, what you learn in financial accounting is applicable in our day-to-day. I personally, as a tax person, didn’t use too much managerial accounting except when I was studying for BEC of the CPA exam!

      Definitely I found application of Principles of Managerial Accounting in private/industrial accounting field. But Jen is right. A good chunk of Accounting is focused in either tax or auditing. All of this depends where you want to apply yourself into the field.

    Did you work 7 days a week?
    I'm learning accounting right now as online student while I work and learn part time at my job, and I'm already feeling too much pressure to learn quickly online and in the company. Also, my boss does not have moral values so it makes the job difficult because he trusts me but I've been told he makes bad business decisions. How do you deal with that?

    • @FinancialMatter
      @FinancialMatter  2 роки тому +5

      During busy season it was normal that people worked on the weekends (at least one day). However, that was just my team. Each team has their own culture and expectations. When does your part time job end?

    • @heathers.9740

      @@FinancialMatter Thanks for the reply! I guess your'e right. At the company I work for, which is a small business, my part time job doesn't "end," but rather I'm in the learning phase, I've been trained on the job since October, and I guess it would just be up to me if I felt like it wasn't working out. Sometimes, it's good, sometimes it's stressful. I guess it's like that with any job.

    I'm questioning myself to whether pursue CPA or not.
    so yeah I would like to ask you if CPA is worth to be pursued in 2024?

    Isn't teaching WAY less money though , in my country ,school teachers make almost half as much as mid-career accountants and I don't think it is much different in the US ( isn't underpaid teachers kinda of an issue in America too?) .

I work for the city as an accounting clerk. ….. am I just overthinking it? I was working really fast and balancing with my money while the others were kind of messing up with their counting and then all of a sudden yesterday and today they started working faster than usual…… any thoughts? Like I’m not sure if I’m being useful or resourceful

    Hi Jen, this is my last year of high school and I’ll be majoring as an accountant next year.
    I just wanted to ask, is this is the right way to go if you’re someone who’s into business and want to start your own company?
    I really love to teach but at the same time the pay is really low for an average teacher and it does not really align with what I’m striving to achieve, what do you think? Should I commence with accounting as it will help me monetarily and knowledgeably OR should I cancel it and major for something I love to do but have low income and basically no hope of starting a business?

      I think it’s a grass is greener scenario…I used to work in healthcare then went back to school in engineering then finally I’m now working in accounting. They all have their pros and cons, it’s just about choosing the work or field you like to do or enjoy the most. Healthcare is extremely people oriented, you will literally be tending to patients or talking to other disciplines for at least 90% of your day. If you enjoy being around people then go for it. I felt emotionally burnt out and exhausted at the end of the day. Personally, I’m a more task based oriented person so it wasn’t the right fit. As for software engineering, coding was fun as a hobby. But as a job, you need to like building things, finding bugs that could literally days to figure out. I also just didn’t have the patience or passion in terms of software architecture which are more senior roles. So I didn’t see my career going anywhere except being a coder for the rest of my life and being stagnant. We always believe that another career path will be better but they all have their downsides. It’s just figuring out which cons you will be able to tolerate more and overlook…also 26 is really young still to switch! I finished my accounting degree at 33! My take was that I was going to turn 33 anyways so might as well do it.
