Dominique Wilkins said it Best: “When you look into the eyes of Larry Bird you see a killer”. He was a joy to watch, and many of us appreciated every second of it from 1979 to 1992. The first 9 years he made ALL NBA first team every year. His rookie year 1979-80 he finished 3rd in MVP voting behind Kareem and George ‘ice man’ Gervin. He finished 2nd from 1981 to 1983 and was 3 times MVP 1984, 85 and 86. Then finished 2nd in 1987 and 88.
    The man was AMAZING.

Today players grow up shooting threes. Bird never had a three point line until he reached the NBA, and even there it was so new coaches didn’t put in the playbooks and players didn’t practice it. Bird was just a true natural and would be hitting ten threes a game like Steph if he were playing today.

Guys have ALWAYS shot from long distance. Bird shot 10,000 would be 3s growing up. We all did. They didn't just decide to make a 3 point line and then guys started practicing it. They made the line BECAUSE guys could hit it. Also, the original 3 point line was in the short-lived ABL in 1961 and it was 15" farther out than now.

Nzinn73 He shot nearly 38 percent on 3 trees a game. Shot 40 or over a couple of times. I have no doubt he would be an elite shooter in today's game and would be shooting North of 40 percent today. Steph Curry has perfected a shot that is one motion and maximizes the distance you can shoot. Larry had a lot of range, I would like to see him shoot those kind of shots in today's game.

Bird was a big man shooting 3's in an era where the 3-point line was literally brand-new and disregarded by coaches and most players. Bird even casually said he never really practiced shooting 3's except here and there with Danny Ainge, and yet he was a killer shooter while being a general all-around elite basketball player at every facet. It goes to show how the game has changed compared to the present day. Bird played in an era where hard physicality, post game, and mid-range was the focus, and he as a big man at 6'10", slow and not terribly athletic, pioneered the game by being an elite 3-point shooter. We need to bring up Bird when we talk about GOATs.

Bird always was capable of long range shots, even in high school. They were another part of his arsenal. Used when needed but 2 points just like a layup.
They were, of course, considered a lower percentage shot and therefore discouraged generally in favor of team-oriented higher percentage shots.

Larry Bird is one of only 2 players ever to shoot 50% from 2, 40% from 3, and 90% from the line TWICE in a season (Steve Nash did it 4 times) and Larry did it in an era that frowned on taking a lot of 3s or deep shots. Larry is arguably the greatest shooting front court player of all-time 💪

Possibly the best Celtic of all time and one of the greatest to ever play basketball. Overall, he's been than LeBron.

But it was never about the money. Bird was making a lot of money, then, even if his salary played to what players make today.

I disagree. I think Bird was doing it for the money. He was saving up for a Buick and it’s well documented that he wanted to do some renovations on his house that year but was out of money. This carried him over so he didn’t have to get a second job.

00:46 Bird made 23points just for MJ. = He told MJ i'm shooting 23 just for you and you need to sit down and enjoy this performance.
After, MJ told Bird i'm taking the Slam Dunk Contest. Bird asked MJ, "What about Nique (Dominique Wilkins), he's been pretty good this year?" -MJ said, "Don't worry about that, you just better sit down and enjoy this."
= To be the Man you had to beat the Man back then to get that respect. -No "free" trophies just for showing up.
Magic got word of what happened and told them both (and everyone else) West is winning this and I'm taking MVP. (All-Star game).
