The sights and sounds of this game bring me back to the short days of the fall of 1990 where my friend and I played it nearly every day after school and twice that on the weekends. Throw in the aroma of a Round Table Combination Pizza and Coke Classic...Oh how I wish I could go back in time!
I never could understand why we got the "Vanilla Ice" box art cover. Thankfully another friend of mine got a Japanese copy for me (along with a converter) on one of his trips to Hong Kong. It will never leave me...

The Sega Genesis was my first 16-bit console and it started off, in my opinion, the first golden era of gaming. I soon got a SNES afterwards and TurboGrapX. Wished I had the money to buy a Neo Geo AES.

Strider was a stunning achievement. To the much younger me; the graphics looked perfect and the sound was stunning. Being an early adopter, I was used to that genesis music quality which honestly many times sounded like a cheap synth, Strider was gorgeous, both sound effects and music were luxurious. Sega knocked it into orbit with this one.

One of my favourite Megadrive games (I'm from Britain) I played the hell out of Strider, completing the game loads of times. I was about 16-17 years old and the Megadrive was the first console that I had bought with my own money, earned from a crappy job I had at the time. The Megadrive will always hold a special place in my heart for that reason, plus it was a great console.

Back in 1989 Legendary Axe came out for the Turbografx 16 got EGM game of the year and TG16 was winning then here in the United States but then came Strider for the Genesis in 1990 got EGM game of the year and best graphics of the year. The Genesis or Mega Drive took the lead then and never lost it. Also when you look at Genesis systems sold and Sega CD systems sold here in the US together, the Mega Drive actually out sold the SNES or Super Famicom here in the States. Systems and Games.
When you look at the PC Engine most people just say PC Engine for the Hu Cards and the CDs. So to keep it fair we should do the same for the Mega Drive. So when looking at the sales of Genesis plus Sega CD.
The Genesis/Mega Drive was number 1 here in the States. Super Nes/Famicom number 2 and Turbografx 16/PC Engine 3.
As a kid the Genesis always gave me more of a Arcade feel especially with the Resolution with Sega choosing 320 resolution most of the time compared to the 256 resolution that Nec and Nintendo decided to use for most of there games even though both of them could do 320 too and actually the PC Engine could do 512 x 240 but only used once if im not mistaken and the 320 x 240 only a few times. The Genesis highest was 320 x 224 which was used most of the time. SNES could do the same but was rarely used most of its games like I said were 256 x 224.
The Neo Geo used a resolution of 320 x 224. This is why out of the TG16, SNES and Mega Drive. The Mega Drive was the closest thing too it being that is used a resolution of 320 x 224 most of the time.
I love the PC Engine and the SNES but I was an Arcade fan and out of the 3 the Mega Drive did the best bringing the Arcade experience home and SEGA at the time was one of the best Arcade game producers.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane ! Remembering Strider , an arcade game that I owned . Ughhhhh why did it stop working ? I had 3 games plus a pinball machine , all purchased at a coin operated auction (1993-95'ish) and pretty cheap becouse everyone wanted Mk and Street Fighter etc lol. Not sure if the machines were original or kits having never seen them in arcades . Strider blew my mind as did Magic Sword ! Also had an Snk Time Soldiers that had unusual rotatable joysticks and like the other machines failed in some way being kept in a garage for too long but was a real fun game as well . Solar Ride pinball was really fun but was quirky from day one but will always love the sights sounds and smells (it had a smell of wood and undefined 'heat' on that one . All gone now with only videos like this to remember ... Danke !

Got my boxed Genesis copy off Ebay ages ago, also have it on PS1, amazing how both ports have different endings. The Genesis has a unique ending, the PS1 version basically has the arcade versions ending......plus Strider 2 (as Strider 1 is the bonus disc). Capcom goofed on the labeling on the PS1 version as Strider 1's disc is 2, and Strider 2's disc is the original Strider.

The first 8Mb cartridge. I still remember the thrill when I finally got it. It was all hyped up among the video game magazines that time and I just became excited, even though I had never seen this game in local arcades and had no idea what this games was about. I purchased it anyways. An what an amazing game it was. Years later I finally got to see how the arcade version looked like with MAME. Turned out this was a wonderful port paying attention to lots of details. Obviously a lot of love was poured into the task of porting this game. We used this game to fight Nintendo fanboys. Should Sega have never gone cheap that often and done all the 2D port like this (and pseudo 3D port like Outrun), Mega Drive would fare way much better than it was.

Tip: if you ever get stuck with an import cartridge not fitting properly in your Sega Megadrive, the best way around this is to simply pop in a Game Genie first and connect the cartridge you want to play on top like you normally would with a Game Genie. It bypasses the need for the shape of the cartridge to fit foreign software/hardware. I was able to play the Japanese version of "Donald Duck's Quack Shot" on my English Sega Megadrive no problem with this method I'd discovered back in the day. There's really no need to start unscrewing your console. I hope that this tip helps anyone who maybe thought that they couldn't play imported games for their Megadrive 😃🎮🕹

Strider 1, released in 1989 in the Arcades and in 1990 on the Sega Mega Drive was by far the best Strider game.
Same with the proper canon Capcom sequel Strider 2, released in 1999 and 2000 in the Arcades and on the PlayStation.

Strider was an amazing feat of programming with graphics that resembled arcade original and it was the same with the sound being close to the arcade original with some differences but it was the best home port of Strider by a mile until the X68000 port.

Mastered this back in the day.loved it! I do like the Japanese case far better than the "constipated middle aged guy" we got on our cover.

It was definitely short. Once mastered you can easily run through it in 15 mins.

The Japanese version went “Puh! Puh! Puh!” when he attacked, The American one did not.

Correct. I actually started with the original Japanese version but the sound clashed with the voice over with the constant Ha! Ha! every time he attacked.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who got thier first job to buy games. Mine was in 97' when I as 15 for a PS1 and Final Fantasy 7. That Christmas of 96' was tough 2d giving way to 3d, carts to CD. It was guessing game lol. I guessed N64, because I "did the math" 64 was greater than 32. My guess was a little premature, but with some hard work I got to experience some of the best games of all time on PS1, Saturn and N64. Yay for child labor !!

I remember it, spending my Christmas money on it on boxing day and completing it on normal difficulty within 2hrs, then being gutted I spent £50 on it.

Used to ride my bike to 7-11 mini mart to watch other people play a Strider arcade game. I didn't have any money for quarters. I still remember the wierd smell in that store. Got the NES version and was super disappointed, It's actually a decent game but has very little to do with the arcade game. Then eventially I got it for Genesis for $80 from the electronics department in Macy's. Was a birthday or christmas present. Still one of my top 5 if not number 1 games. Nice to read through here and see I'm not the only one into Strider.

I don't think the Ghouls and Ghosts port holds up very well compared to the arcade or SuperGrafx versions, but Strider is an honestly incredible port crammed into 8 megabits. It still plays pretty much perfectly, the graphics are barely dialed back, and even though voices are missing, the Genesis sound chip is used masterfully here to recreate the arcade's unique score. Easily the best console port of a classic arcade game.

It was a trip to see all those Import game ads from EGM. I only got the US version. I was a lb so awaiting g the Super Grafx version, but it was canceled and released a few years later on the NEC PC Engine CD. It also required the Arcade card to play. It even had an additional 2 levels, cinema! I imported it for $80.00, Plus the cost of the arcade card. In the end after all of that, The Genesis version was the better translation by far. Great video!
