I lived in Charleston for years. Gentrification has been a real problem in this city and I can see it's happening in these neighborhoods. Soon the current residents will be forced from their homes with nowhere to go because affordable housing is nonexistent in Charleston. The housing projects create a firewall against gentrification because demolishing them would create a nightmare for politicians and developers.
dsr they even started throwing black folks out of Hanahan, The whole city has always been kind of racist to me mainly because it's mostly military folks by downtown Charleston. A lot of people I stayed down there with have mostly congregated to goose Creek
Grew up Downtown Charleston and its not the Downtown I grew up in..... I can say the murder rate drop..... Thats a good thing. I lost plenty of classmates to gun violence in Charleston....

He did drive by projects in this video. sometimes projects are brand-new. sometimes they are renovated. sometimes they are a disaster. sometimes they are in nice or gentrified neighborhoods. sometimes they're in the hood. either way, they're still the projects.

Charleston has the oldest 'neighborhood' architecture in the country. Everything you see is newly renovated gentrification. It used to be largely delapidated just like other east coast port cities.
Projects look great, and fenced in to keep rife raph out but the streets are design for people who travel by city transit buds main streets are to far away to walk to a bus or train

Like most locals that encounter so called "outsiders" they will not speak to you in their real accent and or dialect . They will mainly speak with your with the more formal/proper version of the language, doesn't matter if it's English or any other language. I'm a middle aged African-American man from Greenville (upstate) SC and while visiting Charleston that was exactly what I experienced. For instance, I'd go to a store then while waiting in the check-out line some of the locals would have small-talk with the cashier in their so-called geechie/gullah dialect or accent. When I would get to the cashier they would always switch to speak with me in a normal/proper English accent. I assume they just knew that I wasn't from the area so they automatically switched accents. I wasn't offended in any way but I just assumed that I wouldn't "stick-out" from the crowd so to speak.
Beaufort and the surrounding areas have that pattern of Geechee dialect. Due to the proximity of Beaufort to the Gullah islands. People from Charleston really don't have that dialect. My Dad and his whole fam is from the Charleston and Summerville area
