    Interesting. What could be physically happening when we have a "bad" cell that is not keeping a charge (or matching the same voltage as adjacent cells)? Is it a breakdown of the chemical composition of a cathode or anode, or could it be due to degradation of the layers in between?

    • @ChrisRosser
      @ChrisRosser  11 місяців тому +5

      It could be a few different things. The anode material is liable to separate from the copper foil under thermal or mechanical stress. The same can happen for the metal oxides on the cathode but I think this is less common. Insufficient electrolyte can lead to dry areas within the battery.

    • @easyefpv6609
      @easyefpv6609 11 місяців тому

      I would guess it's mostly the layers separating to where there isn't good enough of contact for the electrons to move between the two materials

    Absolutely fascinating video, Chris. Now I am curious to see the internal construction of all popular 4s-6s lipo brands. I would especially like to see what the new GNB lihvs look like inside with their claim of being the "better" kind of LIHV.

    Great video, Chris! The bouquet must have been exquisite ;-)
    It would be interesting to know the total areas of the active electrodes. Those should generally correspond to the relative energy capacities, no?
    (3rd bullet @ 12:53 matches 3rd bullet @ 13:08. Typo?)

    • @ChrisRosser
      @ChrisRosser  11 місяців тому +1

      Yes typo. The layered cell should say the opposite low internal resistance and higher power density

    We could say that the layered construction of the newbee drone pack is actually 1S 12P :-)

      @KimAbraham 11 місяців тому

      When a cell "swells up", which parts of this construction are causing that effect? Is it the electrolyte that is converted to gas?

    While the NNG results are pretty much what we already knew, the GNB insides is fascinating. I had always suspected the wider 1S cells are on-par or maybe even better than the Tattu folded cell equivalent, but it seems they may not be. Still, for the price and ease of purchase i think GNB are still good for 450 and up sizes

  • @testpilotian3188

    Please do the same with more bigger batteries, like CNHL black, CNHL mini, Tattu, GNB etc. etc.

    Very interesting. Would like to learn the pros and cons of each construction method. It seems like the layered could be taken down by a single faulty layer, whereas the swiss roll might be more tolerant. Also, your first graphical representation depicts coating only on one side of the metal anode and cathode when clearly both sides were coated in the actual sample.

    As Mr. Spock would say... fascinating. It was really interesting to see Chris doing the surgery on these batteries to see how they were constructed.

    This was a very informative video, I love your content. How dangerous is the evaporating solvent and the electrolyte for your health? Did you wear a gas mask or took at least care for proper ventilation? At least when lipos are burning there will be hydrofluoric acid (HF) as a reaction product which is extremely dangerous. Does this also happen upon oxygen exposition? Please be careful and don't risk your health just for the sake of science.

    How bout li Ion? Is it a one big Swiss roll that's why it's low discharge rating?
    How can we safely salvage the xt connecter and balance connecter from a dead liposuction?
    Thabks alot for a great video !

    • @ChrisRosser
      @ChrisRosser  11 місяців тому +3

      I'm cutting a Li-Ion open for a video next week so stay tuned. To salvage the cables from a battery you need to fully discharge it to 0V using a quad followed by a LiPo killer or a suitable resistor (10R for 1S up to 220R for 6S). Once it measures 0V you can cut open the casing and desolder the wires. Be careful not to puncture the cells.

    Beta FPV has a new battery series. The lava ones. They claim that for example the 2-4s 450mah is also a folded(layered) cell type. I wonder how these look.

  • @LarsEchterhoff

    Very interesting. Thanks for getting your hands dirty to disect those packs. Is GNB actually a manufacturer or "simply" a reseller that slaps their brand on a generic cell?

    While lipo is a different chemistry than liion, I've read where most of the time liion is what you actually get when you think you're buying lipo.

    • @ChrisRosser
      @ChrisRosser  11 місяців тому +3

      Most of the value is in the LiMnCoO2 on the aluminium foil. That stuff is really valuable.
