I need that t-shirt Mrs NG that’s me 🥴🤣. You guys give great info I can’t wait until I can start my homestead. But I think I would definitely want a perimeter fence AND the solar fence lol
You got this! You can start where you are so that way when you get to your forever place you have les of a learning curve.
@@TheNakidGardeners I thought about starting but I think it would be a waste. I’m month to month at my place. I was supposed to have left a couple months ago but I have a brother here who is getting married the end of august, so I just decided to stay until his wedding. I think it would be a lot trouble to transplant stuff for a just a couple weeks. More than likely I will do a temporary Homestead on my brothers land until I find my forever land
There you go! Way to find a solution. I hope your brother doesn't mind you doing a temp setup at his place until you get yours. Hope you find what you are looking for. How is the housing market where you are?
@@TheNakidGardeners no he has been offering me to come there for awhile. I originally was going to set up a camp ground for glamping. He has all this land and said I could do whatever, he’s been selling 10 here and 10 there but he has a portion he wants to keep in the family so that’s where I’ll be temporarily. As far as land Missouri has been the best for the money and Tennessee the most beautiful. I’m looking but not too hard because I want to at least get the temporary going and breath for a minute.
I understand that. Well best wishes and hope you find your peace soon
My mother's chickens ranged over five acres, yet they laid their eggs only in the henhouse. She had a row of little elevated wooden boxes with a narrow ledge running in front of them. Each box was lined with pine straw and she always kept a wooden egg in each nest. This is where they laid their eggs and setting hens hatched their chicks.
That is good to know. We still couldn't due to the mix breeds we have. The American Bresse chickens we have. How many chickens does your mother have. I bet she has a nice set up for them.
@@TheNakidGardeners My mother is long dead. She had at least twenty-five chickens at a time. We had a tin-roofed outbuilding that was half-barn & half-chicken house. The barn & open loft were the back half of the building and the chicken quarters occupied the front half. The front half of the building was divided into the roost on one side and the laying quarters on the other, each with its own door. The roost had ascending slats where the chickens sat. The poop fell down beneath the roost & was a source of rich fertilizer. The roost also had a pole that the chickens walked up each evening as it grew dark. We had an eclipse of the sun one afternoon and I remember the chickens all walked up the pole to the roost around 2:00 PM.
@@almaburns6562 lol😂😂😂 That would have been fun to see.. in the middle of the day🕊Thanks for sharing your experience. It seems like you have fond memories with your mother. That's always good to hear🌹
I agree. I have 30 layers and want to find those eggs, which I sell. Second, have a 5 acre pasture that I have let them out, BUT it's when I can sit out there with them. My long cane pole is what I use to get them back in. To many fox, possums, raccoons and stray cats to let them out on their own.
See? You get it. lol Same thing with us...minus the lone cane pole lol. What else are you selling off your homestead?
@@TheNakidGardeners my garden is for growing ingredients that I can for our Farmers Market and the eggs. Keifer pears and concord grapes coming in for preserves and jelly - for self and market
Oh that is nice!
You can train those chickens to lay in designated areas. My mother always kept a wooden egg in each straw-filled box. I do not recall her chickens ever laying eggs anywhere else. My mom never had to search for eggs, though her chickens ranged freely over five acres.
We have tried the egg things with our ducks and it just ain't happening for them lol
Naked Gardeners I want you to know that I'm happy to have found your channel and I look forward to seeing more of what the channel is all about
Welcome aboard! We are glad that you found our channel as well. Hope you like what we have been uploading. What brought you to our channel? Do you garden, homestead, mixture of both?
Four incredibly valid reasons for not free ranging your birds. We would love to free range ours but think the pros outweighs the cons for our situation as well.
Have a blessed week.
Yea especially after that predator attack yall had awhile back. I wouldn't free range either unless I could supervise them throughout the day. But ain't no body got time for that lol
safety is very important for the chickens and everyone/everything around,, by the way love the new logo
We totally agree. We have to protect our investments otherwise we would just be throwing our money out the window and pissing into the wind.
Thanks about the logo response. Just a preview of some future merch that we have coming up.
When we had chickens we free ranged them during the day and kept them in a coop at night. Our problem was hawks getting them in the day time and possums would find their way into the coop at night. We want to get more, but I think this time we'll build a chicken tractor.
Thank you for your response. We might try and free range one of our non valuable flocks. They are their for enjoyment 😉 sorry to hear about the birds being hawks and possums. Reason why we use the poultry fencing and solarizer by Gallagher as their first line of defense.
Y’all are so cute. New subscriber here. Love the channel! Love the funny side-eye from Sidney… Mrs. Nakid Gardener is spicy! I love the realness. Thanks for sharing your beautiful homestead.
Awesome! Thank you! What all do you grow and raise?
Thanks for sharing your experiences 🤩!
You're welcome. Plan on chickens any time soon?
@@TheNakidGardeners My space is too small 😏 but I have considered the possibility once I'm in a bigger space.
We're only allowed to have 4 hens in our suburban lot, and I did a semi-free-range last time I had chickens, and that was a huge mistake. Pretty soon those hens took over the garden until it wasn't a garden. I gave them away to someone with a large flock and a much larger lot. Starting again this week with new chicks, making sure I teach them the right tricks! I will for sure rotate them around, but they will be rather more contained. I also ordered a calmer breed. This has to work for me, not just for "free range freedom"! I will also be growing loads of extra greens to put in their designated area more regularly. I love chickens, but it needs to be a mutually agreeable situation!
Sorry to hear that. Maybe you can add a Gallagher poultry netting with a solarizer so they will stay in a certain area or at least away from your garden. Which breed are you raising that are calmer?
That Abe Lincoln shirt is cracking me up 😂 Good luck with the birds!
Haha thanks. It took the Mrs awhile to get it.
We are fencing in a large free range area for our chickens. Other than that we wont be free ranging for all these same reasons.
That is good to know. What fencing are you using to protect your birds?
@@TheNakidGardeners we have a pen with welded wire with hot wire bottom middle and top of it with ropes on top for air predators and secure coops inside for night time so a double barrier but outside will be four foot fence with hot wire up to six foot. They will still he able to he attacked by birds but will have plenty of hiding spaces as well. For our bitties and setting moms we plan to have hardware cloth soon on a section just for them. We had a snake recently come in the daytime and take a chick. That will never happen again.
Yea that is one thing we have a fear of is the aerial predators. Hopefully, our roosters are protective of their hens and will not have an issue *knock on wood*
@@TheNakidGardeners yea i dont think you can 100% protect them ever . Love your American Bress!
Very informative video you guys are doing a great job protecting your animals. The electric fence is a game changer. 👍🏾✨😎👏🏾
We agree! We try to protect all our animals as much as possible. Think you will add some chickens to your place?
Great video on reasons why not to free range. Very informative, even though I don’t have any right now but will in the future. 😊
Thank you so much. Before we got to this homestead we wanted to free range but with all these circumstances we just could not. Especially with our American Breese chickens. People are paying high dollar for these eggs and birds. Do you plan on getting some egg layers?
@@TheNakidGardeners Yes , I will be getting egg layers and meat chickens.
@Triple Threat Firearms & Defense Inc. WHOOHOO! That is great!
Very good information; helpful.
Glad it was helpful! Do you currently raise any chickens?
I've been researching what to do with chickens for free range. I want some just for pest control reasons, and haven't seen anything recommend rotating what part of the yard they go in. Makes sense and will keep that in mind as I put up my fences and make their runs.
Wish we could help you with free range chickens. I would only free range if we had smaller land, not selling eggs and chickens for monetary reasons, and a perimeter fence
@@TheNakidGardeners I'll be having mix of both egg layers, meat chickens, and pretty much the yard pest control squad if you will. They'll only be able to "free range," while supervision is available. Rest of the time, IF I get my way, They'll have at least three runs available for rotation purposes that will be around 10 foot long by 20 foot wide. That's if I get my way. Plenty of space on my land to make a few coops large enough for that kind of space and have a garden.
your garden is beautiful, were gonna let our chicks free range in an electric fence
Thank you so much. Do you mean perimeter fence or poultry fencing?
Brilliant! 😃
Thank you. Do you have any chickens you are raising?
@@TheNakidGardeners Nope! But I'm dreaming of a full-sized coop housing chickens, ducks, turkeys and some cornish-hens in future.
@@glenwhite4443 oh wow
fit farmer recommended you guys! love your channel!
Aww thank you. Was it the video he came out to our farm?
@@TheNakidGardeners yep and you cooked turkey! God bless your family!
@@Dirtysouthpottymouthmamabear not turkey. Brisket. We just smoked another brisket this weekend and sent him a picture of it. Lol
you guys are awesome this is a good vedio
Thank you so much. We appreciate the kind words. Do you raise any chickens?
Thank you for great info. Mine stayed in the inclosed area, which wasn’t portable. They got to free range most every day as I could be out with them. Rain or shine heat or freezing. I made it work.
Glad it helped. We are thinking about building a few stationary runs for when we go on conferences our farm sitter does have to do much to little at all. How many birds do you have? Are they all egg layers?
Thanks for the video
You're welcome. Do you raise chickens?
@@TheNakidGardeners yes incubated one nearly two months
Have some more inthe incubator now
@@AAHomeGardening uh oh....chicken math!! 😜-Mrs.NG
@@TheNakidGardeners the little one that hatch is doing well and just waiting on some more to join her
Joel Salatin style free-ranging in portable fenced rotational areas with a portable coop.
Exactly our style and inspiration....are you doing this too?
very funny thumbnail, i like her shirt this time
haha thank you. She has these in different colors. I guess she wants it to be known EVERYDAY lol. Do you raise any chickens?
Really enjoy the channel guys. New subscriber.
Welcome aboard! Are you raising chickens?
@@TheNakidGardeners closing on five acres this week. Yes. Chickens will be a big project. But I’ve enjoyed the videos about permaculture and the mower review.
congratulations!
In you guys situation you are doing the right thing I myself free range but I don't live by the road and my chickens are all 1 breed my chickens are done laying by 2PM so I do keep them in till then they go into the coop when it gets dark so I will make sure they are all there and shut them in I also have a fenced in garden but mainly to keep the deer out of my beans but that's my dilemma
Aaahhhh.....it's really great to hear other perspectives because what works for one never works for all. We love the diversity ❤️
heya it's a nice setup for your chickens
Thank you! We're continuing our learning journey
We don’t free range our birds either. For same reasons. 😂We have a rooster that just showed up …we named him Claude .
A rooster that just showed up? lol too funny. How many chickens do you raise?
@@TheNakidGardeners we have around 50 …..12 ducks….10 baby pheasants…and 40 quail. It’s fixing to be harvest time. To many boys…a few that are problems lol
@Pamela Cooley haha we understand that
I have a few reasons we dont free range anymore... my reasons are : hawks, eagles, owls, opposums, raccons, bob cats, lynks, ,,, basicly anything with an appetites...
Hahaha don't mean to laugh but we can relate. Do you keep them in a run or are they protected by poultry netting?
@@TheNakidGardeners had them in a run with heavy netting over, but the 4legged would find a way in under the 6ft fence... without the netting bob would jump over for a bite and leave with take out .. or the owls would fly by night and the count would go down... we have a 10ft rattler my wife met... some coon thought he could take him but i found him under the pecan tree.. i am building another coop with chainlink, will try to find more to lay on the ground as a barrier and hope they dont figure out how to go under... tried a tractor... reached in for eggs and came up with a snake... got bit once by a 5 footer... i dont know what but something broke the hatch door and slaughtered ever bird i had... that us my life in the country. 😉
@@ronallens6204 sorry to hear that my friend
When I had chickens, the worst predators were domesticated dogs. I lost one bird to a weasel, one bird to hawk and 20+ birds to a pet dog, from down the road. I will start again with chickens next Spring and will continue to free range. It depends on where you live. My nearest neighbor is .5 miles down the road. It was their German Shepard who took out 20 chickens. They had the dog put down. She said, "we can't have a dog that kills neighbor's livestock".
Thank you for your response. Especially after our rabbits were attacked by dogs and one got away. Reason we can't fully allow our chicken to totally free range. Sorry that happened to you. Glad to see the neighbor at fault take matters in their own hand. Good luck on your birds.
I cooped mine when 1 layed an egg. They learned to lay in the box. 2 weeks is all it takes. I've seen mine run down the hill to go lay their egg. Free range for me and no egg hunting
That is great. One day we MIGHT be able to get there. Perimeter fence and breed types would be the other issue for us. How many egg layers do you have?
@@TheNakidGardeners
As I am alone now, I have 5
That is perfect size for one person.
I really want to have a controlled free range situation for my birds. Where I live in MO has a heavier tick population and birds are recommended to help keep that at bay. If I keep them controlled in one area, that would only help me control it in that area. But not you have me thinking of just trying to rotate their grazing around our house and outbuildings each week 🤔
That's awesome. What type of birds do you have? If you do rotational grazing with them, get you a strong poultry netting and a great solarizer. I recommend Gallagher Fencing. If you use our affiliate at checkout, it will help you save money.
Where do you guys live ? Looks crazy dry ??
It is, we're in a drought in northeast Texas.
But your chicken is better then most "free range"
Thank you for the kind words. We try to give them the best life as possible for us. Do you raise any chickens?
