Peter Brook is a genius. How fortunate we live in the time of technology to access his wisdom with just a click! I'm here because of Helen Mirren's class. I am using headphones to listen and the audio quality is fine.

My deepest thanks to Helen Mirren and the artists and teachers and internet people who allied with the creation of her Masterclass that has brought this talk to me to be part of the internet community I have myself evolved in ways, yes, both esoteric and profane.. &, after my way, often both at once ..as indeed the bawdy hand of the clock is on the prick of ... NINE! so I had best go ...eat, lest dinner soon enough becomes a mere afterthought~!!! !

Also here from Helen's class. Not one word of Brook's talk is unclear. And so wonderful to have the opportunity to learn and be entertained by such a talented and intelligent theatre artist.

Just beautiful philosophy of not only theatre, but life itself.

What a wonderful thing! Thanks so much for sharing it.
If you're only ever going to read one book by Peter Brook, I'd suggest making it The Empty Space - though I'm currently reading Conversations with Peter Brook by Margaret Croyden, and getting a LOT more out of it than I expected (and I was expecting great things).

    From NYT Obit/ July 2022
Peter Brook, whose ambitious, adventurous and endlessly creative stage work ranged across seven decades on both sides of the Atlantic and earned him a place among the greatest theater directors of the 20th century, died on Saturday. He was 97.
His death was confirmed by his son, Simon, who did not specify where he died.
“Peter is the quester,” the director Peter Hall once said, “the person out on the frontiers, continually asking what is quality in theater, where do you find truth in theater.”
He added, “He is the greatest innovator of his generation.”
Mr. Brook was called many other things: a maverick, a romantic, a classicist. But he was never easily pigeonholed. British by nationality but based in Paris since 1970, he spent years in commercial theater, winning Tony Awards in 1966 and 1971 for the Broadway transfers of highly original productions of Peter Weiss’s “Marat/Sade” and Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” He staged crowd-pleasers like the musical “Irma la Douce” and Arthur Miller’s “A View From the Bridge.”
He was equally at home directing Shakespeare, Shaw, Beckett, Cocteau, Sartre and Chekhov. And he coaxed brilliance out of actors like Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, John Gielgud, Paul Scofield, Alec Guinness, Glenda Jackson, and Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne.

People seem to be upset about the "poor audio quality" of this talk, a problem I must confess to not having noticed, perhaps because it's not a question of audio quality so much as the ability to listen to a soft voice speaking in a kind of cultured accent and context with which many of the young of today are unfamiliar. I do not say this in judgmental tones, (nor did Helen Mirren, in her introductions, one notices!) because, of course, I have the advantage of being nearly the same age as she and perhaps a bit older than she! We are in any event of the same vintage, if NOT the same level of accomplishment!
O, would that one day I might approach her in that regard!

Being a video artist myself, I find it very unfortunate that the uploader of this video couldn't manage to get the audio levels at least into the range of easy hearing. With that said, it doesn't take much to fix it on the users end, if they know what to do. Either way... that was a little disappointing.

I learned that he is the last living legend of modern theatre along with Eugenio.I have seen his bio on wiki but could not understand why he is so lauded and revered as living legend..Seen his Mahabharata .Liked it but frankly thought it was only ok.Also seen Marat/sade.Forgive my ignorance about modern theatre but can someone explain his contribution to theatre or why he is so revered?

The introductory speaker sounds like Violet Elizabeth out of Richmal Crompton "Just William" stories and is the only one I can hear.
