Thank you for the inspiring video! I've been stuck on what to do with a bedroom feature wall for a while....no more! :) I love working with mud and the ideas you shared for a painted textured surface are awesome! Thanks, again!
I absolutely luv all these ideas! It makes a boring room exciting! The littlest thing u do with everyday items makes a big difference! Wow!! That’s all I can say! Wow!! Amazing!!! My fav is the one with the pringles container and wat they did with it making it look like real wood. I absolutely luv that one!!!
Fun ideas, can be translated onto art projects, too, like onto canvases or some prepared Masonite. And for those that want to have bit of the look, they can do it on some other surface, anything thin and light, even a sheet or shower curtain or something more solid, and hang it up for a temporary thing. Then you get your design fix, and can change it if you’re the type that will want a change sooner than later, or for apartment people. A faux glaze 4:1 with paint (more glaze than paint) keeps the color but makes the layers blend well, and you can make them more subtle. Doing a 2 or 3-layer process works well for softening or pulling the look all together, like the base layer with no glaze, just regular paint for the whole wall your background color, them use the glaze for the coordinating colors for the patterns or stencils. Roll off excess onto some scrap drywall or anything, then the pattern will go on well, but not leave as much tactile texture of paint (or any, if you roll off enough first). Have a few pieces so it can dry, or roll it off on some newspaper, taped-down so it won’t slip, (especially if you’re using more than one color, that’s when it matters). For people afraid to try it or wanting to perfect it first, it’s a very good idea to go to a home improvement store and get some thin drywall, or sheetrock as it is called (thin to keep it easy to carry). It’s very cheap, usually just a few dollars, and they’ll usually cut it down into sizes for you that are easy to get home if you have a small vehicle and/or don’t want to DIY that part. 2‘ x 2‘ or 3‘ x 3‘ are good sizes to test your project first. You may even find you like it, and end up with a nice piece of art to hang up just like as-is. You definitely want a base coat first of white primer or any white paint on the sheetrock, and then proceed like you were planning to do. It’s also a great way to test and decide paint colors and patterns first without messing up your walls and having to paint the whole room because the color or design didn’t come out the way you thought it would. Also, look at the color at different times of day to be sure it looks the same. Because lighting changes throughout the day from the outside, a paint color might look totally different in the morning, noon or at night. Just some ways to prevent “painter’s remorse”.
I’ve never commented on a UA-cam video before but that’s because this one is a cut above the rest. I never painted my own walls and now I’m going to start today. Thanks for the fabulous ideas.
Anyone can do these in the middle of a short section of a wall, but how do you paint the top and bottom and corners is what I would just love to see you pull off with the paint roller techniques.
Well, you could do it on a large wall, if you didn’t pick aggressive, or crazy patterns. Or, you could halfway, add a complementary color on the top,, and a great sticky border to join them.
note how you do not see where the wall meets the ceiling or where the wall meets the floor/skirting, there is no way any of these patterns could cover the whole wall top to bottom, even with a normal roller you still need t cut in at the top and bottom and in the corners with a brush or with a very small roller
@@mickcunliffe1912 and exactly how is masking tape going to help???? the point i was making was that there is no way the pattern can go all the way up to the ceiling or down to the skirting board no matter IF masking tape is used.....even when using a roller without these daft patterns you still have to cut in with a brush duh so your comment on masking tape was a bit pathetic and pointless.
Here's a little explanation for a few.... At 2:25 the cardboard will get soggy pretty quickly so you'll probably want/need to make a few cardboard pieces... At 3:05 paint was mixed with drywall compound, then you do as illustrated. Just make sure you mix the paint and compound very well or you will have an inconsistent color when you spread it out. At 3:45 its hard to notice but the person is slightly rotating the can in both directions while sliding it downward. At 4:15 Barely let the roller touch the wall, do not press too hard. At 5:10 your roller will get messier and messier the more you roll it through the paint, so this method looks better in smaller areas. If you do a larger area I suggest changing the plastic bag after 2 or 3 roller applications and I would use multiple roller pans to help keep the project looking consistent (or try like 9:40 shows) ... also I would only use as much paint as I needed for 2 or 3 applications... too much paint at one time causes more color bleeding inside the roller pan. At 5:50 it is better to make a stencil for each of the colors you are going to use. At 6:45 you'll want to put a drop cloth on the floor to catch any drips that go that far. If you don't want the baseboard to get paint on it you can use some blue tape to cover the top of the baseboard and then move your drop cloth up so any paint that happens to flow over the tape will land on the drop cloth. Also, not every line will be straight, some will have imperfections. At 10:06 another thing you can do to get the paint out of from the groove where the lid fits is to get a small nail and a hammer and punch a hole in the groove where the lid fits in a couple spots so the paint will drain into the can and not splatter when you put the lid on. At 10:13 that is a paint and drywall compound mixture. (This idea has a nice elegant look when finished, its my favorite). At 11:00 that is drywall compound. A slightly wet sponge works good just don't press it against the wall too hard and make water drip out of it. At 11:49 that is a paint and drywall compound mixture. At 12:20 that is drywall compound. They also make roller naps that create this texture. At 13:10 that is drywall compound. I hope this helps! These are some awesome ideas! A combination of them can look awesome too! Experiment, don't be afraid! Use a cardboard box or construction paper to test ideas on before applying it for real.
I made up many techniques myself and used them over the years to overcome problem walls. There is nothing hard here. Fear of failure is a big limiting factor for most!
Some textures were pretty dang cool. You definitely need a skilled hand to accomplish a neat and clean look. That wooden tree branch shelf was freaking awesome though!
Some of these are cool, but after painting several rooms in my house I cannot imagine doing some of these! My hands are cramping just thinking about it 😂

transitioning to the ceiling or baseboard would be a problem in many of these cases, so it would be best to consider this be fore attempting them
Because that crazy just painting on a piece of board and she perfectly just making fool of herself!
unless you do it before crown and base trim. : )
