I like your review (I own a SLK32) but a bit too much whining and too much is your preference as opposed to what a potential buyer/owner might like or dislike. Who the heck cares about your past disappointment in other cars (like the Crossfire). So for me: too personal and not enough objective sharing for potential buyers. (maybe some stereotypical youtube "cult of personality" in your review ...and I soon saw that I'm not in the cult you're trying to form). But I'm glad you reviewed it...thanks! IMO, the SLK320 (especially in R170 form), is a delightful summer cruiser....top up or top down....and at a reasonable price: $6k-$12k.

I would rather hear about the car's ride and handling (roof up and down) than gripes about the switchgear.

It needs work, suspension from factory is negligible at best, lowered , firmed and wheels plus tires, then the chassis finally works.

I had a complicated relationship with a red 2001 SLK230 for almost a decade. I named it 'Heinz' because it was red like ketchup and German. I cried like I'd lost a pet after I totaled it a few months ago.

They are great I have owned 3 SLK's from this generation. My advice if you get a mint one it's worth hanging on to since I brought my first one at 23. I am now 30 and still love my current one as my second car. The styling of this generation is so much nicer than the ones that came after.

The same year this was built, you could buy one of the last R129 SLs with the last gasp of Mercedes' famous bank-vault build quality. This just looks too jellybean for me and comes from post-cost cut MB. The headlight washers are fun though with that little puff of fluid. I never actually realized that the SL and SLK were different lines. I thought the name changed depending on the year.
Chrysler got the better end of the DaimlerChrysler merger. I don't think Mercedes ever used any Chrysler tech, probably because theirs were better. The Charger, 300, Challenger, and Durango still use Mercedes-derived platforms today, though not to the extent the Crossfire did.

Me too very underrated, I've had 3 R170's including an SLK 32 AMG. They handle beautifully, fun to drive, classy timeless looks thanks to designer Bruno Sacco just before he left Mercedes. What more could you want? I cannot understand why some people hate on them and complain so much. Who cares if it's not the fastest or not the "manliest car" which I think is such an irrelevant term to begin with associating a car with gender. They are simple, beautiful and fun if it's not your sort of thing people should just buy an MX5 instead which is still a great car. Apologies for the rant I just don't think the SLK R170 deserves the criticisms it gets.

i own always around 3 Cars over Decades.... some come, others go again... mostly Daily Drivers. 6 Mercedes in total. I loved them all. But my SLK first Series stays with me fpr 18 Years now and still hopefully more to come. I beat the shit out of it on the German Autobahn or Countryside Roads. Just mention that it´s not Stock anymore... Suspension is completelly overhauled and modified. Smaller Steeringwheel and Bucketseats. 18 Inch Rims .... Making it a driving Machine without the Diva-ness of a Porsche or other Sportscars.
It´s a true Driverscar without any stupid Touchscreens and Senseless Gimmicks. No overload of Climate Controls, just two Knobs to turn - and be serious. These Cars are made for driving OPEN !!!
Just seeking for a new Daily Driver and my SLK just took me 2000 km through Germany in 3 days. This little Fun Bitch (thats it´s Nickname) will stay with me forever it seems.... ;-)

The problem with the Northstar is that it had to be rolled out quickly to supplant the weaksauce disappointment that was the HT4100-4900. Which, while itself a failure, was the only one of 3 engines Cadillac planned to use in the 1980s (HT, 368 with the 8-6-4 system, and the Olds diesel) to survive beyond '85 or so. Now, based on the later 4.5 and 4.9 HT engines, that platform was overall salvageable, so I think Cadillac should have just upgraded that to an all-aluminum spec - keeping it as an economy engine of sorts - while taking more time to develop the Northstar. Iron out bugs, beg GM for more funds, maybe make the damn thing 5 liters or more.

MB used the worst paint on those center consoles. Even one as nice as this looks rough. I love the looks of them though, especially the earliest low spec cars with the lower-body black stripe, small wheels, and the relatively high take rate of bright colors and manual transmissions. Give me a bright yellow SLK230 with a manual.

The interior in the SLK I had felt quality, but it wasn't. In addition to the flaking center console paint, my glovebox decided to just stop closing one day, the spring-loaded lock keeping the center armrest lid closed broke, the metal trim surrounding the shift gate popped out, and the headliner started drooping to the point where I had to tear it down. Oh yeah, and the roof would also leak all over my passenger seat when it rained.
