  • Pruning hydrangeas, or not pruning them at all, is the best way to ensure you have flowers every year. Certain hydrangeas bloom on new wood while others bloom on old and it's this one characteristic that determines whether or not you should prune.
In this video, I take you with me as I prune all my hydrangeas - panicle, smooth, oakleaf, climbing, mountain and macrophylla. It's easy to do once you understand when these gorgeous, low maintenance shrubs set flower buds.
Also, if you're curious about the Mt. Cuba Center hydrangea study I reference in the video, here's the link to read more:

Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5B, recently changed to 6a, in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.

As always, thanks for your support and I'll see you in the garden!

Great pruning information to have beautiful blooms all season long. Love hydrangeas all around the garden.

I've completed my prepping on my Invincibelles. Mine do flop however with heavy winds and heavy rainstorms. I wish they didnt! Fun time to prune as you know! 😊 Wheres your Shamrock tee? ☘️ 😉❤

Do you have to tie them up for support once they flop or do they bounce back?

I’ve been hearing to delay any shrub/tree pruning until after our cicada apocalypse? (I’m Chicago area too)

Central Illinois will experience the two cicadas at once, but our area will see just one. I'm not delaying my pruning and will be covering new trees as their thin branches are the most likely to be affected. I'll do a video on that as the event gets closer. Thanks for watching!
