A Turkic-Latin ohps...sorry Turkic-Roman for the politically correct. What bloody shame it is to be replaced by a foreigner who never once visited the British Isles. When one has a native hero who died valiantly for defence of his kingdom. Perhaps one day the error will be rectified. God bless you Sir.
As a resident of Bury St Edmund it's nice to watch a video dedicated to St Edmund. Most of us are taught about him during our school years but I guess people from further afield don't know his story. I for one would love to see him back as our Saint. Great video Chris 👍
As an American the first I heard of this was from Bernard Cornwell’s ‘ The last Kingdom. ‘ I first learned of Bernard Cornwell from Ritchard Sharpe who I first seen on Public Television. It’s amazing how a work of fiction can teach history Bernard Cornwell has taught me about Stonehenge ( I must note this is his least historical book) agincourt and crécy , and the campaigns of the British army in Spain and Portugal. Great video ! Thanks !
Edmund was said to have lied at St Andrew's in Greenstead, Essex. Which is the oldest wooden church in England. There is a carving on one of the rafters depicting the wolf and the head 👍
A good overview. As Churchwarden of a Norfolk Church dedicated to St Edmund I became fascinated by the story of St Edmund. To trace his story means wading through many later additions, like the story of Edmund hiding under the bridge at Hoxne but being caught after the Danes saw the reflection of his golden spurs in the water, a lovely story, but spurs did not come into use until much later. 15 yrs ago I went on a motorcycle pilgrimage and visited all the places where Edmund had stayed, beginning with the remains of the Chapel at Hunstanton that was built to commemorate the spot where he landed (He had been fostered abroad), the assumed site of his last battle and finally ending up at Bury St Edmunds. A fascinating trip. there is a very good depiction of Edmund on the Wilton Triptitch. We still celebrate him on the consecration day of our Church and sing the (Victorian?) hymn composed for him.
A very important saint for us Orthodox Christians; especially for those of us here in the Anglosphere. Thank you for this, sir! This was very nicely done, you have quite a wonderful channel. Saint Edmund the Martyr, pray for us! Our Lady of Walsingham, save us! ☦️🏴🇬🇧🙏
They can't save you. They dfo not hear you. For there is ONE intercessor between man and God - the man, Christ Jesus, who does live forevermore. 1 Timothy 2.5. You need to be reading and studying your bible. There is no salvation in any other but Jesus. Praying to and trusting in a pile of rotting bones is not going to get you into heaven!
Love this! I (grew up in Thetford) now live in Bury st Edmunds. I watched the Viking series, an when Edmund was martyred I was stoaked to think that happened 2mins walk from my flat!!
St Edmunds story was taught to us in the school that I attended, he may have become the forgotten Patron Saint of England but his stories live on. A very well done video of this subject matter, more like this please, it was excellently done. and yes, i have subscribed :-)
Sir, your History Kung-fu is strong! I am studying to become a History teacher, and this is the kind of History-in-Context content that I want to teach my students.
History chap, an interesting point for you. The people local to Hoxne, Suffolk have a legend which is that a newly married couple must not cross the bridge at Hoxne, where Edmund was slain as it's bad luck! Couples are known to travel miles around just not to cross bridge!!
I guess it would be weird to be shouting out in the woods and hearing a voice answer back. I suppose I would have been well on the way to the skinboat to Tunatown! 😂😅 I am taking the time to watch all of your older videos and enjoy the intricately woven tapestry of history, kudos, amigo!
Great video! I find this so interesting, given how much of England's history was destroyed during Henry VIII's attacks on the Church. It's often overlooked that we have our own rich history of saints, which I have found fascinating to research. Like how Thomas à Beckett inspired a crusader order of Knights, something I had never known! So thank you for illuminating a somewhat neglected aspect of our history!
Great story. I heard about St Edmund when i was reading the last kingdom books, he was mentioned there briefly, also appeared in the tv version as well. I think he would be a better choice for england's patrion saint.
A different hagiography has 3 wolves bringing the head to his friends. There are a few variations on the theme. Sadly when Bury St Edmunds was ransacked in the baron's war nothing seems to have been left. Though one claim says a relic was taken to France.
We should have St Edmunds Day.. Plenty of Miracles.. I like Stories of Bryonoth 6"10 and huge statue on promenade park at Maldon Essex. And today drove past Waltham Abbey the possible resting place of Harold.. History of Battle of Maldon !!!
The wolf tale is a nod to the Wuffings or Wuffingas who were the royal family of East Anglia as that means wolf. It is entirely appropriate to bring a wolf into the tale of St. Edmund of the royal wolf family. Return St. Edmund to be the patron Saint of England and replace the cross of St.George (actually the Genoese flag borrowed by the English Crusaders) with the arrow pierced crown of St. Edmund and place a wolf upon his standard.
Oddly enough, the US Army unit I served with in Iraq had our most intense battle in Baghdad on 20th of November (2004) and our insignia is an arrowhead (Apaches Out Front). With a surname of English and a genetic history that tells me I'm descended from the British Isles and Scandinavia, I'm somewhat conflicted.
@John M2 Charleston is considered a tourist hot spot. I visited many times when I lived in Greenville, SC, and then lived in Mt Pleasant while in the USNR 1988-1990 during hurricane Hugo. Hadn't been back since until last year. The place had exploded so much, it was unrecognizable. Greenville is even worse now.
Don't mean to be nit picking, - but you've got all the Saxons except the Middle Saxons. It's bad enough Middlesex is a lost county administratively, we need to keep these things alive for future generations.
Don't mind you nit picking David. By the time of Edmund, Middlesex had been absorbed by it's bigger neighbours - just like Lindesy, the Hwicce and others. Fascinating period of English / British history.
The body was no longer covered in arrow wounds, and his head had rejoined to his neck, and he looked liked he'd died yesterday.....reckon they might ve got the wrong body. Cool story though.
Very timely, what with the Last Kingdom on Netflix ( Vikings doesn't compare..) , my own name is a direct Gaelic translation of Edmund, reflecting the deep ties between the Gaels ,Saxons and Angles, you may already have read Max Adam's book, the King in the North, vividly describes the British Isles of 400 to 700 AD...great post, sir ,best wishes from the wirral, site of the great battle of Brunanburh/Bromborough 937AD,Wirral,namechecked albeit in Welsh in the medieval poem of sir Gawain and the green knight....
Shouldn’t St Alban be the prime candidate for a true patron saint of England? We could all then enjoy celebrating on 22 June. A far better day than 23 April.
Thank you so much for this. I would dearly love to see St. Edmund restored as our patron Saint.
Thanks Mark.
He's dead! There's nothing he can do for you or anyone else, my friend. You're trusting in a bunch of rotting bones!
Great and serious lesson, thx Chris! Ludwig
It's great to hear someone using the correct expression of 'battle royal' and not 'royale' for a change. Keep up the good work. Great channel!
Thanks for your comment & for watching my video
It truly is England lose. Yet a great tale to be remembered. Once again Sir thank for producing a wonderful video of a martyred king.
A bit too late to change it now, I guess we are stuck with the Turkish bloke killing a mythical beast 🤣

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Being brought up near St Albans, I have a similar vote for Britain’s proto martyr.

Something recent my family found out is in my mother’s side we are related to king Edmund. But on my fathers side we are related to Ragnar
Now that is a family tree!

At last St Edmund & St Edward - England's rightful patrons!

As I said at 13:35 in the video.
Didn't Edward the confessor also briefly hold the position too, 🤔
Indeed he did.
Of note his close relative was sainted following an interesting military encounter and possibly beheading in Herefordshire.
it seems martyrdom was a family trait!

Does anyone know which Pope canonized this Saint?
Not off the top of my head.

As a girl from the fens , I am bias. St Edmund needs to be reinstated as our patron . We need him more than ever.
He certainly a bit more English than St George!
The body was no longer covered in arrow wounds, and his head had rejoined to his neck, and he looked liked he'd died yesterday.....reckon they might ve got the wrong body.
Cool story though.
Or simply made the whole thing up!
I've never understood why stained glass windows depict Edmund as an older man, he died in his 20s
Rather like Jesus being white with blonde hair when he came from the Middle East!
@@TheHistoryChap Exactly, bizarre
A pity that Sebastian got filled with arrows nearly 600 years before him or Edmund could have been Patron Saint of Archers !
:)

I believe the more interesting version ☦️
I think most of us would like to
Makes sense. No offense to saint George, but England does seem to prefer foreigners to their own.
Thanks for taking the time to add to the conversation.
A good Christian Martyr story is much better to get converts than the old, He died in battle!
Indeed it is.
I allways thought it was stolban
Saint Edmund for me, the so called establishment will not convince me otherwise with their horseshit...
Thanks for casting your vote for St. Edmund.
