Another good surprise for me, the bearings are not so hard to replace as some doubled row ones used at many cars, as the Passat! Even for me, I don't have a press but can take the whole hub and bearings to a friend's garage and reassemble it at home!
Vini Terranova the rears are double row cartridges locked in with giant snap ring like on front wheel drives. I’ve not done this on a 124 yet but its on my to do list with the rear end rebuild. I have them in stock ready to go.
Tuning in again from Atlanta, I must say you are truly a man after my heart. This is the stage I am at in my restoration, however because I don't have the press i must do everything manually. I have the races in the freezer, and will install them later today. I noticed that you used another high temperature bearing grease not the MB neon green one. Please let me know which grease you used and how you measured it out before packing. As always phenomenal demonstration. BTW, are you using a Canon 5D MK II to shoot the video?. The quality is excellent.
I just use this castrol htb 2 grease - its cheap and works great. I have scales and weigh the tube at every step and ensure the correct weight has gone in. Obviously with this not being the same as MB grease the weight may be slightly different but as long as the quantities are roughly correct it will be fine. The camera i’ve had for years now is Panasonic HC-X1000, the lower image quality, shaky hand held videos are generally shot on my phone. I bought the Panasonic new and from day 1 it’s had greasy fingerprints all over it - it has had a rough life with me and I’ve even dropped it a few times. It’s huge and heavy but the image quality makes it worth while.

So I decided to copy you and this was intentional. I sprayed my spindle with cast iron and also my calipers. It gave them a more natural look, and even though no one will see them, I got a personal satisfaction from doing so. Unfortunately I cannot share the pictures here. It's coming along. Tomorrow, hubs go on, calipers go on, and then it's time to dial in the numbers with the dial guage. I have no clue how to use the tool but I'd learn as I go.
What kind of grease did you use? I always thought you had to use Mercedes Factory Grease. I'll be doing wheel bearings on my Son's 190E when it hits 100,000 miles.
This is the stuff most commonly used here - it is used at the mb workshop i visited recently and they've never had any issues with it. I've never used mb grease on wheel bearings - any high temperature wheel bearing grease has always worked fine for me.
georgimilkov777 MB is very specific about how much grease they want in the hubs, for the 124.031 it’s 70 grams in total. I weighed the container multiple times to ensure approximately 70g went in. If anything theres not quite 70g as some will always be lost on fingers etc but it’s close enough.

Just did the front bearings on my 1990 300ce a month ago. Did not have any special tools but managed anyway :) /17 year old from sweden.

I think it's also possible to assemble outer raceways by cooling raceways in freezer and heating up the housing.
quite possibly. The interferance fit isnt that great so it probably would work but I have never tried.

as far as i know there is special rolling bearing grease, at least that is what used. It was not the one from Mercedes, but still works well.

DJ Wallick correct - the htb 2. This was what the workshop advised me they use. The added bonus is that its cheap too!

Graham Carruthers it’s all in the workshop information system. Many of the 124 manuals are contained in it.
