Anise seed is the flavour of Ouzo, which is a Greek alcoholic drink and probably why it was added to the spice mix by Steve’s family. A traditional taste of the old country.
Licorice is from a root. You were showing a picture of star anise which is not the same as anise seeds. They both have the licorice flavor, but there are differences. Star anise is used a lot in Asian cooking.
I finally got to try some of your hard candies, a while back I considered a purchase but 18$ shipping felt excessive, this time I said what the heck because I was so curious. I LOVE the flavor of your hard candies they are great and long lasting. You guys show so much care in how you package the candy and the packaging materials are high quality which definitely justifies the cost the old saying "you get what you pay for" is definitely apropos and I will definitely be ordering again, love the candy!! Should've purchased it the first time I checked out your store😍
Licorice is a plant growing in Asia, Middle East , Southern Europe. Back in the days it was used for medical reasons. Even the Pharaohs used it as a sweet drink. Myself I love licorice candy, the best is the soft chewy sticks. I also love clove. Funny the things people don't like is really healthy for them. I absolutely love your Hercules Candy's
Green should be an acceptable color for anise as star anise is an evergreen tree in Vietnam and China. Love your videos. You ate all so much fun to watch. Thanks for sharing your candy life!
Maybe to put into perspective the flavorings that were available to "early" candy makers... were the spices... the other fruity flavors came along a long time after. Early candy makers were just so ecstatic to have sugar at their disposal... they didn't really consider all the other options they had to flavor the candy. To me... this is why original "ribbon candy" at the holiday season (when I was a kid about 100 years ago) was always spiced flavors. It looked so pretty, but as kids, it was really kind of yucky.
I have always wondered if you made sugar free candy. I was recently diagnosed with diabetes and as you can guess sugar is not my friend. Just received my spice candy after being notified via email. I'm so glad to get this. I love clove and anise (Clove and Blackjack gums also BlackJack taffy). Fantastic.
There are so many different licorice tastes. Sadly my favorite discontinued but I still love others. It's also funny: most from North Germany like licorice South not so much
Historically black licorice is ammonium chloride and not made with anise and other similar ingredients 😊 Taste is pretty similar but real black licorice is way different especially when comparing side by side 👍

I would order things all year round, the candy prices are fine but the extreme shipping costs, which with some things couldn't be avoided, but makes the orders more than I can afford on a fixed income.
Mmmmmm black licorice/anise.. sooo good..one of my favorites. Growing up, there was a older lady who lived on our street who made these Anise cookies. They were sort of like a Biscotti biscuit. Great with hot coffe or hot cocoa ot some teas. All you have to do is store them away in a tin can and they would last forever... The older they became they would become rock hard.. almost dangerous weapon rock hard... LoL. But they were sooo good. The the oil extracted from anise seed consists of trans-anethole (85.69%), limonene (2.92%) (also found in orange peel!), chavicol (2.69%), and anisaldehyde (1.79%). At Princeton University (and many many other schools), the organic chemistry students do a steam distillation of the crushed seeds (from dried Star Anise flowers) to obtain the oil. Some to the components are actually foul-tasting and it might be best to use pure trans-anethole, though it's more expensive and probably seldom done.
There are a couple of 'old fashioned' flavours in Australia, and Anise is one of them (but we call it Aniseed). Humbugs are Aniseed hard candies that are traditionally black with white stripes.
I don't mind anise (I prefer the balls with the anise seed in the middle as I like chewing on the seed), but I loathe licorice and wintergreen.
Makes me sad all the dissing of clove. I always thought it tasted like vanilla mint. At least that's what I picture in my mind. Love clove.
I love anise and spearmint. Hate clove. Cinnamon and peppermint are okay too of the Christmas candies generally available.
licorice, anise, fennel...i love it all lol. grew up occasionally having finnish salmiakki (little too salty for me) but i love anything that tastes like black licorice
My favorite. Just bought the Spice Mix and I pick them all out!
You hit the hook with the hammer to show dominance. It needs to know you don't fear it.
Haven't had yours, but i'm a fan of anise! Our pizzellas at chirstmas are anise--- one of my favorites! I like clove too... Clove gum, just chewing on one until my lips go numb! Have you ever done cardamom?
Anise candy is green because its the color of Absinthe wich is flavored with Anise
Black licorice and clove candy has a soothing medicinal value
I enjoyed having licorice buttons from Meyer Brothers in Paterson NJ as a teen. Our cousins arrived from Holland with salt drops of varing degrees and shapes and sizes. I can buy Horehound candies at the local Heritage Park candy store. I love it all!!! In Calgary AB. Keep up the good work.
Anyone else get a good laugh from the system's caption replacement for "anise?" No, just me? 😂😂😂😂😂
Love y'all! And my dad and i love black licorice, this would be fun to try! I just can't do cinnamon.
I love the taste of anise. Every year when I make pizzelles for Christmas I always use two bottles of anise so good.
I ordered 2 bags of the Anise one time. It was so good! I need to get more money & beg for more.
Licorice Root isn't used as much as Anise (aniseed) for Licorice flavored items.
Those earrings are awsome 🥰🥰👍💯
I was a hater. But found my love in my late 20s/ early 30s. Now I really dig a Good-n-Plenty!
