In Concert from 1973 is probably one of my favorite live albums ever, but this one is such an oddity. Glad you guys covered it.

I think the '73 concert shows them off better as a live act with Ricky and Blondie in the mix, as well as the archival performances that have come out of the last few years. But this is still pleasant, and I agree that the vocals were very good for live performances.

By this time the band was bigger in Britain and this was released initially there. My copy was an import. It only came out in the U.S. when they had their resurgence.

Still have my vinyl copy of the reissue from when I was a kid. I do still listen to it quite a bit, definitely best version of Darlin ever and Aren't You Glad was great as well. Keep up the good work guys

I got this in the early 70s. Back then you could only find it in the import section, so it cost a buck or 2 more. I always enjoyed this album.

Good review. It's a good live album, and I'm not usually a live album guy, but this or the remaster works well with full sound and depth, and the tinniness is minimal. 'Darlin' sounds very good, and I always liked it so much more than 'Good Vibrations, which is a bit of pretentious inventiveness but is more enjoyable here. 'God Only Knows seemed even more beautiful. Mike Love's chit-chat is found wanting.

Solid pick. The quality's ace, also with bands like the Beach Boys a live album can be a break from studio versions that are overplayed. In the end I'd rate it about the same as you two though... because of Mike. Maybe a few surf era tracks included could've added something cool to this. Also, I have this on a single CD with their first live album from '64 =).

Never listened to it and I'm a huge fan. Tomorrow I'll do it.

Yeah I liked this album but I basically agree with you both entirely. It was cool to hear as a historical document but I will likely never go back to it. Mike Love's banter was pretty goofy, I groaned a few times lol. 3.5 for me too.

Just wondered when the 1974 deep dive is due? I am rattling though a lot of albums and have found some gems. Would like to know how much time I have.

I basically agree with your observations on this album .
It's Ok , but not one I listen to very often .
I find the In Concert album superior as a live document from them .
    Cheers !

The horns on Sloop John B really don't sound good, which is a shame, because it tends to be great live number. The version on the 1973 live album sounds fantastic.

This album didn't get released in the US until 1976. Somewhat surprisingly The Beach ⛱️ Boys were never particularly good live.

They had a pretty solid live act in the Ricky/Blondie era IMO.

What a perplexing review! It’s clear that a live album (even by one of your all-time favorite artists…right?) is not immune to scrutiny. Was expecting you two to gush for 20 minutes about this one! 😳
Live albums by my favorite artists give me such a surreal feeling of being present right there in the moment and I revere them: the banter, the crowd, the idiosyncrasies. I may enjoy live albums more than the next gal.

Beach Boys music lends itself better to studio albums. Their live interpretation of their studio songs always pales in comparison to my ears.

@@oppothumbs1 Some singers are better at engaging a crowd than others. A couple of my favorites are ‘The Cure - Paris (Live)’ (old fave) and ‘Wild Beasts - Last Night All My Dreams Came True (Live at RAK)’ (more recent discovery)
Of course you’d have Neil! 😊

Really intimate album with all the dialogue. Too bad a lot of it (Mike's) is so dumb! Song selection was a little odd, but it's fun. Aren't You Glad needed this energy (and horns) over the laid-back studio version.

I love live music and albums, more that studio in a lot of cases. This album is flat and boring. Beach boys are a studio band. you are being generous because you love the band so much.

Nah, I was being hard on them because I love them so much. I’ve heard many better regarded live albums that sound worse. - Joe
