You can't listen to Gurrumul without a lump in your throat or tear in your eye. The soul of that sound is coming from the dawn of humanity.
He was to good for us.

He sings of his land and his life. I saw his mother interviewed. She said " If you close your eyes and listen, you will know him". He has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. ❣️❣️

The ‘spiritual’ is, always was, there, but G….. opened many non-Ab people’s ears to it.
There are none so deaf as those who will not listen. 🤍

If Archie and youthu Yindi brought politics to the front, Gurrumul brought life, love, culture, ancestors, family and spirit forward. His aunty said it best, 'if Gurrumul's songs bring tears to your eyes then it's speaking to your spirit'.

Thank you for showing respect by putting up the warning first ❤️.
This song is haunting. Delta, who also performed this with him provided an explanation of what the song is about - suggest you find that video and watch it. It makes this performance even more powerful.
The saddest tragedy is this is a beautiful person with so much to share who died too young. Way to many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders die too young.

I am an immigrant from Wales although I have lived here most of my life. I can hear the country in Gurrumuls voice. To me it’s like the Treorchy male voice choir who sing with the country in their voice.

Thank you so much! More people should know of him. I was lucky enough to see him live a few years back, and it was simply transformative. He has several solo albums and also collaborated with numerous musicians (he did a duet with Paul Kelly, singing Amazing Grace - Kelly singing in English, Dr G in Yolngu), and his final album, Djarimerri, is a masterpiece, blending traditional chants and ceremony songs with contemporary minimalist orchestral arrangements. There is a documentary about him made just before his death which is well worth watching.

If you haven't already, react to Delta Goodrem and Gurrumul (from The Voice Australia season 2) their duet of Bayani is beautiful and healing as well! Like this one, tears flow from the first note. Delta (an absolutely beautifully talented singer/songwriter in her own right) stated "it was the greatest single honor of her life to be asked to sing with Gurrumul" Enjoy and God Bless you!

Yeah it's beautiful. Really special. It's just such a tragedy that the people like this that do things so well, those that unite us, as opposed to those that divide us, are seemingly always lost to us so quickly. Lost before they could ever realize their potential, I don't mean their professional potential but their potential to bridge the divide.

  • @artistjoh

I also love him singing duet with Delta Goodrum in which they sing Bayini with Delta singing an English part as well as Aboriginal.
Also incredible is his duet with Paul Kelly singing Amazing Grace in which Gurrumul sings it in Aboriginal, while Kelly sings English.
Aboriginal music has benefited from the original Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander radio station started in Townsville in 1972, and now there are around 130 Aboriginal community radio stations around the nation, some big, and some small.
Glad you have discovered the incredible sounds of modern indigenous music, and use this taste to explore further. Australia has been producing great music from all cultures for a long time, but most of the world is only waking up to Australian musical treasures relatively recently.

If you think his guitar playing looked a bit wierd its because he was born blind and self taught. And left handed. So instead of turning the guitare around and restringing it so the the low strings are on top and the higher strings at the bottom. He just figured out how to play it upside down. Amazing. He also played drums and keyboards. RIP.
