      War for defending the defenseless is one thing; War for greed and power is a totally different animal.
      Like to hear Ann Murry's arranger ADD this short beautiful introduction Vera Lynn sang;
      Funny how time doesn't seem to change the VOICE, isn't it.
      Short song, to the point, with love straight from the heart, through the brain and out the mouth. BEAUTIFUL MS LYNN.
      "I Fall to Pieces With a Touch of Class-ical Guitar"
      "Heartaches" and "Why War?!"

    Why do I cry to this? I was born in 81 and heard this in primary school. The war has never left my sense of tactile understanding after that. Kids in school today have no reference, no Grandparents who knew it. The smells of that generation and the cooking. The coal bunkers and single glassed windows. Milk men and paper rounds. Real cream sodas with a ball of ice cream in lemonade. Is it any wonder we have these issues in Ukraine now? Egos chomping at the bit to go down in history. Nationalism again? Seriously?

      Now explain why this American cries every time I see such a gathering in Britain, for example, in the Last Night of the Proms, while "God Bless America" in the middle of a baseball game does nothing for me. It's a very inspirational song, so it must be the way it is sung.
      I think several things go through my mind.
      1. When people sing God Bless America at a baseball game, it's 30,000 people singing individually. No one's got his/her arms around the strangers next to them. This song emphasizes "we." As does, for example, Parry's "Jerusalem." God Bless America emphasizes "I".
      2. In these moments, the British express both toughness and resolve, and sentimentality. Not a half-bad combination, is it?
      Every now and then, I come back to this page to experience that once again.
