Seriously... everything is priced like designer fashions and accessories now. Prices no longer have anything at all to do with what a thing is worth or how much it cost to make. Nvidia - above and beyond any company in our space led to this. You could point to Apple, but generally Apple is incentivized to get their main hardware into your hands somehow. Fan performance isn't going to be great, in terms of airflow-to-noise, at least. While lots of people might think that RGB is all about aesthetics, fans designed for RGB have a performance penalty. This is because that RGB ring eats into the space available for fan blades. So while these fans are in a 120mm chassis, from the disassembly it looks like there's about 10mm on each side allocated to the RGB ring + tolerances, compared to about 4mm I've measured as the gap on a Noctua 120mm fan. Might not sound much, but taking into account the fan hub, the Noctua fan blades would have something like 25% more area (assuming a circle can be used to approximate relative fan blade area, fan hub with 35mm diameter).

The PWM control has come a long way that you can simply limit their max rpm by editing the fan curve on Rem0o's fan control (like 80~90% speed below 99°C), the server fans comes with much better dynamic balancing, and sturdier bearings since they are designed to run constantly on 3000rpm or faster, yet sold cheaper than those flashy PC fans, I've heared that some PC fans even comes with obsolete bearing designs

Fans seems to be a high margin product, cost little to make and people seem to pay a lot for them if they have rainbow puke.
I usually buy Sunon fans for my OLD computers, they cost about 3.5€ on sale with tax for a small 40-80mm fan.
When not on sale about 5-6€, and if I want a 120mm its closer to 12-13€ if they are not on sale.
Now why would one buy basically industrial fans for a old or modern PC?
Well you can nowadays get Magnetic bearicgs or maglev as Sunon calls them, they can be had for the same or lower price as PC branded fans that dont even have magnetic bearings.
And they are even cheaper compaired to PC branded fans with good bearings.
I cant scientifically say how good they are but my old 486 has two new 80mm Sunon and you cant hear them.
I replaced a 80mm Noctua with a 80mm Sunon Maglev and its much quieter.
The downside of the Sunon fans I bougth is that they have no fan header and no RPM cable or sensor.
But for a lot of systems I cant measure RPM anyways, and the connectors cost med 2€ for 20 on ebay sent to my mailbox from this french company, they have 2,3 and 4 pin mail and female.
So adding the connector is almost no cost.
I did buy some fans with RPM cable and they are like 3x the price (about 14€ per fan) so as soon as you start to add stuff to a basic fan the price go up a lot from my experience!
To me RPM signal and PWM for a modern PC is a must but past that I dont NEED or want to pay for stuff that are not needed.
RGB and software and hubs for your fan is just a solution in search of a problem, it adds little to no value in the sens that it wil lhelp cool your PC or save it for disaster.
Just more shit that can fail and more shit you pay for.
Why would I budget 50 USD per fan if I can budget 13 USD or even less and it still cools well and is quiet?
When I buy fans I want to know there airflow VS noise level, because the fan that moves the same amount of air to the lowest perceived noise is the fan I want!
    RGB can ho and DIE!
The fans being designed for looks without compromising performance that I do not believe in, but now fans reviews are basically "how good is the RGB" review.
I do price comparisons with industrial fans, and Sunon,Y.S Tech and Papst was used in PC, Mac etc in the 90st and early 00 before the howl "PC brand fan" became at hing but with there prices now being more competitive, them using modern bearing tech and modern DC motors and with a price often around 4-13€ I actually look at them as an option even for modern systems and if I need to I add the dam connector myself!
My smallest server requires a 60x10mm fan, ITX system, and I can not get that in PC stores most of the time and when I do they last 1 year.
The Sunon fan I have now is SO DAM GOOD!
The DC motor is smaller then anything I seen on a PC branded fan, the bearing quality is exelent, sure it was 12€ for a 60x10 but the fact that it already lasted as long as 2x 10€ crap PC fans means it pays for it self.
No DC fans are not that expensive, 3-4€ and up with VAT included so why the hell are we paying 10x or more for that for a PC fan?
    Its beyond retarded.
I have saved so much money Buying Sunon fans with two leads only and adding my own connector instead of buying fans targeted at PC's.
Its kind of funny how we in the late 90s to early 00 paid extra to get Papst or Y.S Tech industrial fan brand instead of Garbage PC brands and then around 2010 give ore take most people abandoned Industrial brands for PC brands names like Noctua or BeQuiet! due to there good airflow to noise performance and long lasting bearings.
Now we are abandoning those brands for RGB rainbow acid trip fans for even more money and performance, who cares!
Its also funny how Noctua now is kind of a budget brand, even BeQuiet has increased in price, they where so cheap once.
Both of them do have more expensive fans but they do offer the 12€ fan.
On top we have Corsair and others making RGB fans with unknown performance but they make light and thats what people want apparently, or at least what the companies want us to buy for more money!
I think fans like this just shows how superficial we humans have become XD

The more the cost of cooling equipment the more I'm starting to think outside the box. I have and old radiant heat system that has been disconnected, also have a circulator pump to suit. I'll still need water blocks and mounting kits, so keep up the solid work! I do have a question, what are the approximate design limit pressures of an average water block??? D5 pump curves barely approach 5 psi. Have you tested any water blocks at higher pressures? Do you have any flow/pressure curves for any water-blocks? I intend to use my whole foundation (or at least 1 zone) as a heat sink, no fans needed! Just assuming the water block is the biggest restriction in the loops. I haven't seen anyone test setups for restrictions of flow, though I have seen triple 90's in a row. Immediate 90's pre and post pump discharge with no regard for pump cavitation. Rule of thumb would be 3x pipe diameter straight line prior to pump. It's also a bit surprising that the D5 pump is the goto pump even though pressure restrictions are not known. Usually you know the operating pressure range and THEN you spec the pump. Food for thought! 60 psi sounds like a nice manageable pressure, 5 psi is just a dribble!

Just a shout out to you as I have followed you for many years always great videos. On this topic I have found that most of these case fans are so slow and do not perform very well at all. I have been building my own set ups using delta fans that have a much higher static pressure and up to 3600 rpm. Then I add a speed controller that can handle the extra amperage the delta fans need to my rigs. They are fused with heat sinks and are attached directly to the 12 volt rail of the PSU. All can be purchased from amazon and made to look very professional in your build. One exception is the led bling which for me is not as important as the cooling on my open loop systems. I was able to get some used Cisco chassis fan trays with Delta fans for a very reasonable price and they rock keep my hi heat CPU and GPUs 10 to fifteen degrees lower then these types of fans.

The only fans I bought in over 20 years are Sanyo fans. Never had one fail on me. In the worst case, I just need to oil the bearings to kill high-pitched chirps.
I do get a bunch of fans that come with components, such as cases (Fractal Design, Lian-Li) and coolers (Noctua).
I will use the Noctua fans if I don't have a Sanyo equivalent, but the rest, I give away or throw away.
The only other brand I'd consider buying is Nidec, but I find Sanyo is easier to buy (Mouser), so I haven't bothered trying to source Nidec fans.

Of course Corsair have done a great job but I can only see them in show off builds, not in an everyday system

I swapped my DC Thermaltake fans to a set of Thermalright TL-C12s, they were roughly 12 bucks each. And it still hurt me to pay 36 bucks for them, the old ones still worked and all I wanted is a bit of noise reduction and better CFM for my rads. I kind of got it, but it wasn't nearly 36 bucks of improvement. Payin 50 dollars PER fans is insane, you can get so many PC components for this much money - additional SSD, more RAM, a better PSU if you sell the old one. Maybe as technology matures, they will come cheaper, but my experience with fan hubs is quite negative, as they work over USB and Windows often freaks out about them.

love the thing you said about how often are you assembling your PC, people are not buying a car based on how easy it is to assemble or take apart, but on how it drives... get the better parts for cheaper. 400$ on fans alone you might as well go custom water cooling for a bit more money.

    • @Morpheus-pt3wq
      @Morpheus-pt3wq Рік тому

With a car, it´s considerable to take repairability into account - at least slightly. The longer, it will take to disassemble and reassemble parts in service, the more you´ll have to pay each time. It´s not like you´re going to disassemble it at home, right?

    • @k1vd038
      @k1vd038 Рік тому

@@Morpheus-pt3wq you want a car with easily available parts and cheap, if the parts are expensive as hell or rare to come by it doesn't matter that it takes the mechanic 3h instead of 5 for a fix. also even with a car i assume you are not at the mechanic every week (maybe if you drive an alfa) . I'm just sayin that people sometimes use that excuse of easy to assemble to justify a higher price even tho Joe random is gonna put together his PC and probably not touch it again for the next 2 years so the assembly time in the grand scheme of things doesn't really matter.

I didn't even use the RGB on it because it didn't fit my board and I need their custom adapter cable for it for another $25.
It is in a Lian Li Lancool II Mesh RGB White case as the rear fan, which should have been included for the price of $165 CAD and without the front panel USB-C adapter for another $35.

The length of the 6-pin and USB connects seem like they could be longer. It seems like you're going to need to cable manage around to the back and then you're going to have this hugely long cable that doesn't need to exist going to the fans. Or maybe I'm missing something.
Overall, like most people the cost really isn't in-line with the product itself. The link product line is awesome and saves a ton on cable management, if you've used before. But it's not something you see, or should want to point out. It's something you'll quietly impress people with.
Markets everywhere are out of whack though. Prices for the smallest products are sometimes competing for the price of the completed products they are already in. It makes no sense. Not to say that's happening here. Although, you could buy a cheap computer for that price (once again).

Never tested Corsair fans, but from the various brand I personnaly bought, only noctua didn't have annoying bearing noise
Most don't make much noise but it falls appart after a few month, or it only happens in a specific orientation
I also remember the ML120 fan from corsair being overpriced while being trash in performance/noise ratio.

That's kinda hard to justify when a Phanteks T30-120 is like 25-30€ and like, double the performance. I can literally get that AND a lux RGB frame for less money, and have the same temperatures for half the perceptual noise level.
I also find a white fan with a lux frame reflecting off of it looks *so much better* than a translucent fan, YMMV.

You could get the Alphacool Solo Pump/CPU Block, Hardware Labs SR2 Rad, and all the fittings, tubing, coolant and fans for the same price ($300) as that AIO, and you will have a much better cooling solution that you could take apart and use separately later if you wanted. It is crazy to me why someone would want to spend that much on an AIO that you are unable to do maintenance on, and is just going to die from clogging in 3-5 years.
Edit: I made this comment before the very end of the video where he said the same thing, whoops.

Pricing is crazy high for a simple fan, even their AIO pricing is way too high, also Corsair will no doubt be adding these to their case lineups, so their already expensive/overpriced cases will increase by £100-150 by simply changing from the current 2-3 fans they come with to these.
I have a 7000D case, it came with 3 of Corsairs lower tier fans, I swapped those out for Noctuas mostly due to fan noise from those, I do not care about RGB at all, it is a waste of energy for a metal box that sits under my desk.
When you are spending ~£250-£300 on a case already (That is usual retail price, I got my 7000D on a mis-priced discount for £170 😁, I would never pay full retail for such a case), then if Corsair force people into this ecosystem by adding those fans as standard, a case like the 7000D will increase in price to £350-£400 or more, at that point a lot of people will simply stop buying Corsair cases.
I also have a Corsair AIO, which I got before prices were yeeted due to "pandemia", I paid around £110 for a 360mm Elite Capellix AIO that retails today at ~£170, these new 360mm LINK AIO's are £250, that is simply a price I will not pay nor a closed eco-system with proprietary connectors that I do not want to enter into, it is essentially the exact same AIO system except with proprietary connectors and some magnets, no thank you.
Any future cooling items I buy will be from a different brand, I already use Noctua fans in all my builds for great airflow, static pressure and low noise reasons (also no rgb garbage) - those are features I am willing to pay for.
It will not take much effort to find another AIO vendor or simply move to Open/Custom loop and never have to bother with all this AIO, RGB and overpriced fan rediculousness ever again.

My opinion is that Corsair prices these things so high because people still buy them. An AIO loop is not a critical component so,if people want prices to go down they should just stop buying overpriced stuff. Same goes for people complaining about the price of new graphics cards, nobody actually needs a 4090 they just buy them because they're rich and/or care about social status, realistically most gamers can be satisfied with a cheap-ish 2080 from 2 gens ago

2 years ago I bought an h150i capellix plus 4 LL120 RGB fans for 280 euros. I've already used them in 2 systems and intend to keep using for at least the next 5 years. Unless Corsair chooses to discontinue this line in favour of the QX line, save yourselves some money and buy last gen instead. It will take you an extra hour to cable manage but if you do it right you'll never have to do it again, even if you upgrade your components later. If you don't care about RBG, even better, just get a noctua Cooler and a few arctic fans and you're golden, 150-200 euros Max.
