My friend, the Olympics belong to the world! I cannot describe how happy and proud I was when the games were held in my home city Athens, same for all Greeks. That is a joy everyone should experience.
The voice in English said "Olympic Games welcome back to Greece." In Greek she said " Olympic Games welcome back home" Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες καλωσορίσατε σπίτι σας!!! ❤🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
The Olympic Games has come to belong to the world, however hosting the Games is very expensive for the host country to the point that it is almost not worth it financially, and it is this reason that there have been some talks about keeping the Olympics in one place, and I whole hartedly agree that the games, if ever to stay in one spot, should be in Greece

the fact that the greeks gave so much RESPECT to the ceremony melting my mind and giving me tears. you can see how they love their history, their culture.they shared with all of us. what a great nation . olympic games must hosted always at greece.
We as Greeks are very proud of our culture and our tradition the Olympics which originated in Greece there still have a couple of Greek islands that host things similar to the Olympics and honor of our ancestors it’s on a couple of Greek islands my ancestors came from the Greek island chios and from the inland in volos just two hours away from Athens Greece I might’ve been born in the United States but I am adult citizen of the United States and I am proud of my families culture and our traditions and the Olympics being shared with the world the Olympics were about bringing together the community and a competitive athletic type of way it’s also a symbol of our culture and our ancient ways
As an Italian huge fan of Greece after 20 years it still’s give me chills.. culture, history, class and beauty. Greeks must be very proud!
Only the creator knows every detail about its creation. The Olympics has the same history as Hellas (Greece). Showing the Hellenic history, we try to show the mentality and staff of that people.
Can you help me comprehend the plot and characters of this play, please? - time code 16:09 What is this? Greek symbol? - Who is this couple playing in the lake? And this pregnant woman? Are these Greek characters from the epic? Or is this the director's creation? Thank you!
@@milaos8787 At 16:09 is the "Cycladic Figurine", basically idols/figurines (never life-sized statue) that were sculpted by hand before the archaic age. Many of them were excavated around cyclades I think. Basically it's the "origin" so to speak, hence it was used as the "egg" of what follows (ancient greek statue parts) No idea on the couple, could be anything (we have many such myths here) but I doubt they were purely the director's creation, must have symbolized something. If I were to guess, could even be europa and zeus (he did fall from the sky), but again, many myths of a couple falling in love in the beach. And honestly in 2024 it's refreshing to see something like it - a normal relationship.
@@theyellowarchitect4504 thanks a million! I googled Cycladic Figures. Now I got it. Ancient period. As Greece is known all over the world with her myths I thought that couple is Gaia with... Idk who. Because Gaia is not only connected with the history of how the world appeared. But also she took part in Olympic Gods life;) I'm sure that the director was inspired by Greek mythology. That's why the historical part is not purely history. Greece is represented here as one of the centres of civilization. This explains the Universe, love, pregnancy, DNA code that are woven with each other through the performance. Million people are here again after that shame in France. We all need to find something beautiful and normal. ;)
I was 12 when I saw this opening ceremony and all I thought at that time was: "I want to go to Greece one day." Now at 32 I have visited Athens, Mykonos, Corfu and Santorini. ❤❤❤
But it is partly our fault, we've ridiculed the west for a history and culture of slavery(as if slavery is not a universal matter), we've claimed their cultural identity is rooted in colonialism, so as we saw in France ,all they have now is illusion for culture and identity. It was sad. The west has too contributed much to civilization.

It is a bit of a shame though they completely ignored Classical Roman Greece and Medieval Greece. Classical Rome was the golden age of the Olympic Games, when it was funded and promoted by a Roman Empire of 50+ million people, to the point that many cities tried to host them too. Medieval Rome had Olympic Games in Antioch up ti Justinian the Great, when the city was destroyed due to earthquakes, plagues and Persian invasions. And still after that the Roman Greeks still hosted sport competitions, like spear-throwing, ball-throwing, disc-throwing, weightlifting, running, boxing, horse racing, chariot racing, even horse polo.
Im not greek but I just cant stop crying because of how emotive, beautiful and meaningful this opening was. Such artistry included every single one around the world and portrayed the essence of the Olympic games. Well done. ❤
Same feeling, I'm italian, and I was in awe when I saw this masterpiece of beauty and soul, and poetry, it gave me such a happiness and many tears of emotion ❤ thank you

I think France had many fantastic moments. And their bold outdoor setting is to be applauded. It was not a perfect 4 hours as we know when they hit the runway it went South fast. It recovered well with the metal horse scene, tower light show and Celine finale.

For those who didn't understand the beginning, the person who was playing the drum on the screen was supposed to be in Olympia (where the games originally started). The two people were playing their own different rhythm but in the end they synchronized. It's actually an amazing symbol of the past and the present being aligned to start the games. Such a fantastic tribute to our history, which without it, we wouldn't be the same.🇬🇷
Hearing Greek spoken at the Athens Olympics was a turning point for me. I decided I absolutely had to learn Greek. I didn't get the opportunity until the pandemic when classes were online. There were local classes but they were holiday Greek and that wasn't what I wanted. I've been learning it for almost 4 years now and am enjoying every moment. How different things would be if I hadn't watched the opening ceremony of the Athens Olympics!

Basically it's the "origin" so to speak, hence it was used as the "egg" of what follows (ancient greek statue parts)
No idea on the couple, could be anything (we have many such myths here) but I doubt they were purely the director's creation, must have symbolized something.
But also she took part in Olympic Gods life;)
I'm sure that the director was inspired by Greek mythology. That's why the historical part is not purely history. Greece is represented here as one of the centres of civilization. This explains the Universe, love, pregnancy, DNA code that are woven with each other through the performance.
Million people are here again after that shame in France. We all need to find something beautiful and normal. ;)
@@milaos8787 I agree, but at least it is easy, just look into the past ;)
From an art history perspective, the cycladic figure breaking into a kouros is absolutely breathtaking and a brilliant decision of art direction.

The emphasis on Greek identity rather than just being a modern spectacle is what makes this ceremony stupendously beautiful.

The west has too contributed much to civilization.

Well done. ❤

2024 The Olympics in Paris France it was a flop , a circus rather a Pride parade I feel sorry for the French people they have to pay for this .
For those who didn't understand the beginning, the person who was playing the drum on the screen was supposed to be in Olympia (where the games originally started). The two people were playing their own different rhythm but in the end they synchronized. It's actually an amazing symbol of the past and the present being aligned to start the games. Such a fantastic tribute to our history, which without it, we wouldn't be the same.🇬🇷
I was watching the 2024 Opening Ceremony, and had to come back to this to be inspired again. That procession is absolutely sublime.
Hearing Greek spoken at the Athens Olympics was a turning point for me. I decided I absolutely had to learn Greek. I didn't get the opportunity until the pandemic when classes were online.
@@tongmanng9543 Both Athens and Beijing opening ceremonies are number one till now.
*This ceremony was the beginning of the perverse plan.* First, they made Greece famous to everyone so that with the memorandums (i.e. the staged financial crisis 2010+) they could start the dirty defamation of the Greeks internationally, to ruin Greece and bring millions of illegal "immigrants". Wake up.
Greetings from Athens🧡🧡🧡
Unmatched Opening Ceremony of the modern day Olympics up to this date (2023). The creativity level is on another level. Greek ingenuity is so much alive. Well done, Greece! 🇬🇷 🙌 Greetings from the Philippines!🇵🇭
I totally agree with you
I completely agree
I can't take my eyes off this stunning parade😮😮😮😮😮I even repeated the Greek cultural parade session 5 times and still want to watch it, truly enchanting and magical❤❤❤❤❤greetings from Indonesia🇮🇩 to the people of Greece🇬🇷
The level of artistry in this is unmatched. Olympics is definitely home in Greece.
With Paris 2024 around the corner i wanted to watch older opening ceremonies. So i watched tokyo and forgot that the stadium was totally empty. How derpessing. So i came here instead. Hard to believe that this was twenty years ago.
@@juliagamet1998question is why do it in the first place!!!!
The true art is timeless
how depressing are you feeling now with that Olympics woke garbage?
Yes it happened!!! And do you know the reason??? Because we are Greek!!!! Thank you for your kind comment!!❤
2004: Athens
2008: Beijing

2020: COVID 19
@JYB'S Foodworld indeed. I will call Tokyo 2020+1
@JYB'S Foodworld yes , it's , unfortunately
I can't wait for school teachers to say."Do you guys know that the Olympic games haven't took place only once and when was it?" WE ARE PART OF HISTORY NOW !
😔
2024: Paris
2028: Los Angeles
The best OPENING OLYMPIC in History......no one can defeat GREECE,.

Probably as 90% of current viewers now :D
😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 It's necessary to watch Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020 in order to clean your eyes completely.
😂

I am French. After the opening ceremony of
Paris, I felt the need to see this ceremony
Greece, cradle of Olympism, for me
reconnect to the pure values of the Olympic Games, that they have been carrying since the dawn of time....
And studying the ancient history of games and Olympia, i have shame of this 21st century.
Thanks to ancient Greece and its Pantheon for having offered this to the world 🙏
Thank you from Greece 🇬🇷
Thank you from Greece🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷♥️🌿
This 2004 Olympiad showed all of Greece s History, including its Byzantine History
I'm from Greece! I'm really sorry for all French people! I was waiting for this ceremony for long time, i admire the huge history of France, all the great things that this country has accomplished, so beautiful art and architecture and culture! It was disappointing for all of us! But that doesn't mean you must feel embarrassed! We all know how beautiful people French are! You, as citizens, must feel proud for your culture(your real culture)! Only the organisers must feel embarrassed about it 😉 We love France and French ❤❤
Am Greek and I would expect, due to rich french civilization (in philosophy literature music , fashion, cuisine arts, or even popular culture ) to achieve the level of Athens opening ceremony or even to surpass it .Instead I watched Minions and Papa Smurf on a fruit plater surrounded by a Drug show. A cheap rediculus kitschy show that has nothing to do with the olypmic spirit or what France has offered to the world....
