- Fort Talietumu, Wallis island (Uvea), Pacific Ocean - the Tongan fort Talietumu on the island of Wallis of Wallis and Futuna in the Pacific Ocean. Let's travel to the island of Wallis in the Pacific Ocean and let's walk around the Tongan fort Talietumu located in the remote island of Wallis, of the French territory of Wallis and Futuna in the Pacific Ocean. This is the Tongan fort of Talietumu, built in the 1400s during the peak of the Tongan Empire in the Pacific.
The Tongan fort Talietumu or Kolo Nui is an archaeological site in Wallis and Futuna in the southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean.
Talietumu is situated about 9 km (5.6 mi) southwest of the capital of Mata-Utu and northeast of Halalo in the Mu'a district on Wallis Island (Uvea).
The Tongan fort Talietumu was a fortified Tongan settlement called Kolo Nui and the whole fortress is surrounded by a strong defensive wall build of basalt with several entrances.[2] Inside the fort there are a few preserved buildings and structures, lawns and the central elevated platform called Talietumu (a Marae or Mala´e, "Sacred Place"). The platform is of circular prolonged shape upon a circular stockade base. Raised walkways paved in stone start from the mala'e and radiate outward from within the fort.
Wallis and Futuna is a French island collectivity in the South Pacific between Tuvalu to the northwest, Fiji to the southwest, Tonga to the southeast, Samoa to the east, and Tokelau to the northeast. Though both French and Polynesian, Wallis and Futuna is distinct from the entity known as French Polynesia.

Thank you so much Vic for this fascinating video. It's so important for all Tongan to learn about there culture and history. You can find signs of Tongan occupation throughout Polynesia stretching from Tonga to the Cook Island and Rarotonga to the east and as far north as the Marshalls to the north then back down to Tonga and every island kingdom in between. One correction on this piece of documentary. The only reason Tonga and the Tu'i Tongan manage to create a vast empire is by a strong navy. To accomplish this was first to occupy Fiji and control the large timber to build the Kalia. These were large double hull vessels that could travel far distance where canoes could not. The Kalia's could carry up to 200-250 person. Can't thank you enough for this beautiful documentation.

+Sione L Toki Just another quick message; is there a museum somewhere that displays an original Kalia?? The biggest 'canoe' that I saw was in a museum in Noumea, New Caledonia but is was not big enough to carry 200 people..

Unfortunately Vic there isn't one that I know of. However, there's a small replica display at the Polynesian Cultural Center in La'ie Hawaii. The only other one of the same structure however not as large is the Hokulea of Hawaii.

Fantastic Vic. I can give you information about the artist who built the Kalia. He is a living monument in Hawaii. He can provide you with a personal tour and deeper insight on the history of the Tongan Kalia. He lives just about two miles away from PCC.

"Malo Lailai (Greeting In fagauvean) alright so there was a legend of a powerful warrior who was referred to as ahu'eto he was a power legendary warrior who conquered the people of Fanguvea. He was from what we called in our legend and myths "Polianga oe fukau ngàahe tahi tui tonga' which translates to 'land and kingdom of adventures seas." After conquering the island it was said that he intermarried with a local ouvean women. After that he would bring many tongans to intermarry with the locals which brought the rise of fagauvea. The son of Aho'etu who was referred to as Mana'tukua who was known as the legendary chief of fagauvea he helped unify the whole of uvea island by the help of Mighty tongan warriors. This legend is mainly about "the rise of fagauvea" or "kou e Mahiki xere hake le fagauvea."
Keep in mind Aho'eitu on record is 950AD according to Tongans

I'm learning the influence Tonga had on the Pacific. I am Palauan and on my ancestry DNA reading I'm 10% Tongan. My great great grandma came from Wallis Island. The other Tongan DNA is unaccounted for so Tongans have definitely had their DNA as highly influential around the area. Never thought MMT could apply to me 😂.

The Lapita people are Polynesia’s Ancestors and they settled in Tonga first, making it the first Polynesian Settlement. The Tongans then left home to explore what was out there in the pacific. For example they FOUND & CREATED an island we know today as Samoa. Basically all Samoan Chiefs & wannabe-Kings were actually Tongan descendants. Know your history & speak with your grandparents, they will know so much more.

Majority of the Tongan a very talented people, they have the most Ph.D. per capita in the world, they have the intelligent to rule over the Pacific. The ocean were not barriers but highways for their "KALIA", only a few European warships in that era can match the speed of those KALIA. Today Tonga faces many challenges, obstacles, positive and negative political issues, but this KINGDOM still survive & carry on the same traditions & cultural values, such legacy may last forever. Amazing video Vic Stefanu! Talietumu You bring to light Our Tongan History, I am proud of my Tongan heritage, but have been raised to know my roots from Samoa, Fiji, Uvea, Tahiti, and Hawaii. I have noticed many people have biases for their own cultures, but from my own ancestry it's actually very simple. Samoans and Tongans are the same people, root of all Polynesians. Samoans settled and cultivated the land. That is why Samoa has the better Islands,they are also the root of Polynesian Royalty (Tu'i Manu'a), and the Mother Land. Tongans were the Warriors and Navigators. They traveled the vast South Pacific and colonized many, many Islands leaving their mark everywhere, Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia. In Ancient times their language was One.

Samoans are the descendants of Tongans. Our Tongan elders have always told us these stories as well as scientific evidence that suggest we have the oldest Lapita Site where they settled first before exploring the rest of Polynesia. So basically all Samoans are the Off-Spring of Tongans.

I knew Tongan ruled the Pacific but i had no idea they built am empire on the island. I hope to see the ruins being studied further so we can learn more about our history while we have it!

Yes, the Tu'i Tonga also ruled Samoa for many years and they were brutal until the Samoans had had enough and fought back ousting the Tui Tonga and his men out of Samoa, which gave rise to the Malietoa title. The Tu'i Tonga and Tuimanu'a prior to that were the ancient dynasties in the Pacific region. They visited each other and there were stories in Samoa handed down from generations to generations about Tu'i Tonga's visits to the Tui Manu'a. Tui Manu's was said to have received regular visits by people of other Polynesian islands to pay tributes to him what they call "umiti". The name Manu'atele ma lona fale selau "The Great Manu'a and its House of Hundreds" was referred to the hundreds of the Polynesian islands under his rule including those Polynesian outliers within the Melanesian group of islands. Interesting history!

A site in Faga Fitiuta on Tau island of Manu'a was dated to have been inhabited as early as 1000AD which is the peak of TuiTongAa empire........
100 islands paying tribute to TuiManu'a .....the migration to settle islands outside of Tonga and Samoa said to have been between 900 to 1200AD and that is again the peak of Tuitonga empire..... 950AD is estimated time of the first TuiTonga Kauulufonua ...boasting the empire to have engulfed 20 different island groups not 100 haha haha ......
If TuiManua predated TuiTonga much of Polynesia was not yet settled haha haha so how could it boast 100 islands...lol...wasn't much of an empire.....

From my readings, the Tongan empire reached as far north as Hawaii, far east as Tahiti, south to NZ, parts of the east coast of Australia, Rotuma, Samoa, Niue, Tokelau, Uea, RaroTonga, parts of Micronesia. It was a tribute system of empire, the main centres of power were in Tonga, Samoa, Rotuma, Uea/Wallis. Also their empire existed much earlier than 1450, some estimate as early as 1200AD.

Less than 20 people a year visit this fort and it is such a historic place, all Tongans need to know about it...

My family was also from 'Uvea. Sadly, most - if not all - of the 'Uvean families that settled in Vava'u were refugees from 'Uvea who were driven out by King Lavelua during the civil war.
The refugees were led by the chief Puli'ūvea (I believe his descendants still use Puli'ūvea as their surname), who tricked a pālangi captain into transporting them all to Vava'u, where they would be welcomed by their Tongan relatives.

This video is a fascinating one because it gives you some insight to what my ancestors were doing during the reign of the Tongan Empire through the 15th century, as stated in this video. To be frank with yous i have little knowledge about my Tongan history especially Tu'i Tonga, once the greatest empire in the Oceania Region. Although that time is now in the past, there are still traces of Tongan influence and culture left behind on different islands throughout Polynesia. Great Video & Thank you for sharing!

Also I like to ad that I really love the way you explain and speak with so much passion. It is so graceful and humble... Also the name of the Tongan canoes that they traveled in were called TONGIAKI canoes. These canoes were double hulled 70ft long canoes with a flat deck that were made to haul huge loads or 100 men at one time. The wood for the Hulls were only found in Fiji called "Giant Vesi" for they were very very hard and strong.
When Dutch, French and British explorers sailed to the Pacific they were overwhelmed by the HUNDREDS of Tongiaki Canoes(Dells, Yachts and Catamarans) that were all over the Pacific and how they were also BIGGER than their european ships. In Tonga, Samoa, Tahiti and Hawaii. These explorers ALSO illustrated and kept records that you can find on the internet. Tongans built ALL of the Tongiaki' canoes and made giant warehouses in both Tonga AND fiji. These explorers were Cook, LeMaire, De Bourgainville and Dumont D'Urville... This is HISTORY schools do not know about. Which is sad.

Sorry brother, Tu’i Tonga is the ONLY maritime empire there ever was. Vic’s spent a lot of time in Samoa but has not found anything suggesting an Empire had been established there. Thanks for all the insight in your video’s Vic! Regardless of where in the Pacific we come from it truely is a rich history which is more of a shame as we have no documentation of it apart from old folk tales.
I was just explaining to my son about how Samoa won their country back from Tongan rule. I think it is such an awesome story that I hope one day could be made into a movie. One country’s unification to overthrow the reign of another, a great battle. On exit a great speech which helped form a Royal bloodline for the victor. All the squabbling nowadays is in detriment to that event and the words that were spoken on those shores.

Hey Vic I would like to commend you on your brilliant content and also underrated commentary. I've been scrolling through your videos especially the ones in regards to Polynesia. I'm off tongan decent and have always been a history fanatic more recently wondering what the ancient Polynesian culture and history was before Christianity reached us. Because we had an oral culture we couldn't preserve records of what life was like before hand so history and lore had to be passed down through story and song, I fear we lost to much and time has mixed these accounts with cultural bias. I'm making it a hobby of mine as a goal to piece together my own version of what happened as accurately as I can and then like you present it for viewers to see 😁. One day soon

@@VicStefanu hey vic recently saw your video in rapa nui and yes I think you make an interesting argument and present and overlooked link, the architecture of the mound does indeed match up with the langi found in lapaha and in our oral tradition speak of voyages made frequently to the people of rapa nui during the region of Tui Tonga's. I've recently found myself quite interested in polnesian history as I think it's often overlooked but holds a wealth of lost knowledge and it's thanks to people like youself we can shed a little light. I'd like visit some of these places one day like yourself 😊

Thank you Vic for the documentary. I am very fascinated by this as I love the history of my people, the Tongans, but in general, all of Polynesia. There is a rich history with the Polynesian people as they are connected in a lot of ways. You will also find a lot of fortifications in a lot of the other islands. The Maori people of New Zealand also have this and have a lot of traditions that are passed from generation to generation. I wished you had a drone so you could video from the air as to how big this fortification is. Amazing, just amazing. Thank you very much for this documentary. Vic! There's a Tongan Fortress in Fiji. There's a village beside Sigatoka town that it was told that Tongan people lived there. If you come across Fiji you can check that out.

Great video my friend. Talietumu means "Tali-e-Tumu" or "Reception-of-the-Apex". "Tali" means "to receive" or "reception", "tumu" means the "summit" or "the apex", a referral to the Tu'i Tonga, the Supreme Ruler.

+Michael Friedman There is an airport On Waliis with flight connections to Fiji, twice a week... The motorcycle belonged to a person that was there cutting the trees and the grass around the excavated part of the fort, there is a small dirt road that leads to it...

The war dance Kailao came from Uvea now known as Wallis. The limestone used to build the Ha'amonga o Maui (Triliphon) is thought or said to be from Wallis too.

Vic you might wanna travel and learn history from all the islands besides Polynesian. I believe the micronesian island still practice the art of sailing using the nature of the stars, clouds and tides. Maybe you might find Kalia boats there im not sure. Also there is other islands with fort build from way up high as you sail close to the island. It looks so amazing as if they were ready for their enemies arriving with huge ships. And to add on to this video Tongans believe when Aho'eitu the first Tu'i Tonga took over the South Pacific he build empires across the oceans. Not only was the empire was build for Kalia Boats to be made but also to make sure Tonga will never be rule by another Island but due to his great grandson being assassinated a group of Tongan warriors followed an unknown ship and the ship landed there to Futuna. The Tongan warriors who discovered the betrayal of Futuna Island were killed and eaten commanded by their chief but they left one warrior alive. He was to deliver a message and that message was that the Empire of Tonga is no more. Futuna and part of Samoa had gain alliance and war once again took over the south pacific. That was the last time a King has ever taken over the South Pacific. Afterwards is just many stories of Kings fighting for the throne of their own island or the throne of the South Pacific but no one succeeded for the throne of the South Pacific.

Hi, I do not think that Talietumu looks like Pulemelei and that's because Pulemelie is a pyramid like structure (I was there in 2020 and I was refused entry to the site from the waterfalls below since there was a dispute about the land). However, I would seriously compare Pulemelei with the tombs of Lapaha and the old, original ahus (platforms) of Easter island and I would not be surprised if they all showed architectural similarities

+Jay Young Absolutely. We know so little of these ancient cultures and that is because we tend to think that European history is 'older' than that of other parts of the world. When I arrived in the Pacific, I had assumed that the islands (of Polynesian, for example) had been inhabited for (maybe) 1,000 or so years and I was amazed to learn that the Lapita people had lived here for more than 3,000 years old (and that is, 6 centuries before the Acropolis was built in Ancient Athens!). So, we tend to think as European history being the oldest and far more important but there are places in the world where civilization has existed for many centuries before major historical events took place in Europe.

Back in the days when all of eastern polynesia was already settled the tui tonga tried to take islands in eastern polynesia, yeah they may have won battles but in the end we sent them back west to where they came from there's no stories of Tonga ever ruling but trying to. Eastern polynesia was a place where many wars were breaking out from island to island any outsider would've just been extra food for the blood thirsty savages.
