I grew up in one of those Tudor houses in the 50s and 60s, some of the streets were still brick paved back then and there were more original Victorian style homes.
What may have been the impetus behind the layout of the streets goes back much further, to what are today called the streets of Higgins Ave. and Talcott, were well used Native American trails, and then wagon trails, used by settlers and farmers, it's believed the later street layout plan designed to flow with those angled streets.
There is no real evidence that Frederick Olmstead had any involvement with the design, it was laid out by a landscape designer named J.T. Foster who was commissioned in the late 1860s, the very same time that Olmstead did his first commission for Riverside. In 1905, noted landscape architect Jens Jensen was commissioned to design the parks.
Your video brings back many great memories, I haven't been back there in some years, it was a wonderful place to grow up. That house to the right of that tri-level at 6:22 (the house in the middle), was built by a friend of the family, he built many thousands of those homes all over that area and the adjoining suburbs, most in the 60s and 70s.

What was the friend of your family’s name who built thousands of the Chicago step ranches? My husband and I just purchased one in Norwood and are mid century enthusiasts. Thank you!

Cahill builders, its the one to the right of that tri-level at 6:23. Great for you guys, I miss that area, it's the most beautiful residential neighborhood in all of Chicago IMHO.

@@frankkolton1780 Yes! That's exactly the type of ranch we purchased. We're in the process of restoring her original charm but it's built like a tank! Can't get anything with nearly the same quality or craftsmanship these days. Thank you!
