Trying to keep my ego out of being a freshly promoted blue belt, I can tell a lot of the white belts roll with me differently knowing that my belt color has changed. I know that I have a lot that I need to learn during my time as a blue belt so I'm focusing on trying new things outside of my comfort zone so that I can expand my game.
Same here brother. Once you get your blue belt the white belts roll harder, purple belts roll harder and even the people who have been blue belts longer roll harder. It's all about learning and growing which is hard to do if we're always worried about "losing" or tapping.
Just got crushed In my first tournament, stings is a understatement but this video was what I needed to hear, I worried what coach and others thought of me afterwards, kinda hard to show my face again but wasn’t a big deal to anybody but me
As you clearly expressed, losing can be the best thing to happen. My biggest leaps forward have been sparked by my worst losses. Thanks for addressing this situation!
One issue with the belt system is that there are no clear guidelines on what each level means. White and black are easy to understand, beginner and expert. But blue, purple, and brown are a little messy. I think of the belts as an education pathway. White is K-12, Blue High school-AA, Purple BA, Brown grad school, Black is when you earn that advance degree. Also competition adds a different element. If you are placing 1st in all the white comps, thrm blue is needed to promote growth.
Not really sure why i even watch these videos since i dont train bjj, but same thing happens in track and field, once you are constantly improving everything is great, but at some point your progress slows down or stops completely, thats where the doubts come in. However, if you have a good coach, as long as you keep your chin up and continue working hard, your coach will probably be happy to have you around and not feel like you are ruining his image.
Been addicted to your channel since I joined a gym 3 weeks ago at 38 yrs old. I got a bruised rib at last weeks training and have to take some time off. I'm really bummed and a little embarrassed about it but these videos keep my mind sharp. Appreciate you.

Love your videos and I've never even looked inside of a BJJ gym before... Reached out on Twitter with questions, hope you see them. Love all the positive energy and advice you give!
Coach probably promoted him because of recent success where he proved blue belt level. New blue belts are statistically worse than the average blue belt. Coach probably understands this.
Great videos Chewie. Just wanted to let you know that after stumbling onto your channel a few days ago, ive enjoyed all your white belt beginner type vids. I got the BJJ bug from hearing a former navy seal named jocko willink talk about it all the time and now coupled with you. I have started looking at gyms and ill be going to my first fundamentals class this Saturday at one of the Gracie academys. Im excited and nervous at the same time. Of course if I was in Kentucky I would be going to yours (jersey is konda far😂) but the vids do help a lot boss so keep coming. Very insightful and educational. Wish me luck!! P.S. sry for the comment being long..i like to talk as much as you do lol.

Got smashed, had no idea what I was doing and did it all with the biggest smile on my face. Now my only regret is not starting when I wanted to way back in my early 20s lol. If you keep showing up youll keep getting better.
1) Even if you never meet your coaches expectations I’m sure he doesn’t mind THAT much. I imagine he still likes your money at the end of the day. 2) I’m not crapping on the community. But as much as I love Jiu Jitsu and everything that comes with it, at the end of the day people need to realize it’s just a martial arts class when everything is said and done about it. How some people lose sleep over stuff like this is a little beyond me. If I advance, awesome. If I don’t, that’s fine too. I still have things going for me in life outside the gym.
"It's just a martial art". I understand that YOU don't take it seriously but for a lot of people this sport is pretty important. I'm sure you have things that are important to you(outside of necessity). Try to empathize.
2 of our bros were promoted to blue this week they both smash me every time. And I don't think I will ever be anywhere near as good as they are. Somehow I have 3 stripes.

Hey chewy, I need some advice, every time I roll in my gym, I tend to get winded or fatigued after just 1 match, I tried doing some cardio but nothing is working, any advice?
Upvoting and commenting so that chewy sees this. I’m woefully in need of the same but what has helped me has been interval training. Things like dynamic movements, sprints for time. So I’ll pick up a 50lb bag for 30 seconds and then chill for 30, or do the same thing with sprints, hills, kettles, etc. Again I’m coming from level -1000 but it seems to be helping me a lot.
Maybe try to focus more on faints and good frames, don't force things, try to find space before moving so u conserve your energy more , less scrambling and more frames and technique, or better body position for more pressure so if your on top your not "squeezing" so much but are still heavy and have control
The best cardio for rolling is rolling. I used to easily gas out then think that's me done for today. Then someone said to me to keep rolling even when really tired. Best thing I ever did. Now I don't really get tired
