The modern variation, a good, dynamic stroke...The traditional Gyaku-Zuki I learned involved pivoting fully into Zenkutsu-Dachi, with the rear leg locked out and the rear foot flat and the rear hand going Hikite to the hip or high side, then back to Kiba-Dachi. Not criticizing, the modern technique is more practical. Subscribed!

Thanks for sharing your input and experience, sir! It's always appreciated here. The Okinawan system we use here doesn't use much hikite, although when it does, it's usually very subtle. Onegaishimasu!

I'm just wondering what makes this punch "reverse" 🤔
Like: it comes from the rear arm?

Exactly! It's called a reverse punch because it's performed off the rear hip which offers the greater rotational power.

Thank you! I think it's important to punch for every realistically-conceivable position possible, and this one is a no-brainer. 😉 Thanks again for your comment!

It's pretty like modern JKA Shotokan sport karate. That's not like traditional Uechi Ryu karate. There's no trunk rotation in Uechi Ryu. Just look at Uechi katas. But to think two things : a) Ancient masters haven't discover trunk rotation (that means they weren't so clever in that case), or b) Ancient masters knew trunk rotation, thought it is very important to generate power but didn't put in their katas and at the same time they said that all are in katas (it's very strange. Perhaps they did appreciate to make a lot of jokes).

@@AuthenticKarateTCWestPeabody what are you thoughts on this? Would you say Uechi-Ryu got influenced by Shotokan later on in included such punches in the training?

      That's an interesting comment!
I'm pretty new to Uechi-Ryu but it's my understanding that several southern kung fu styles like Wing Chun don't use punched generated by hips rotation.
I think the reason is Uechi-Ryu really focus on self-defense which should be super close range and prioritizes speed over strength (which the philosophy of Wing Chun).
I don't think Uechi-Ryu is meant for fighting (consensual fighting/street fight).
I don't know if punched generated by hips rotation are practiced in Uechi-Ryu (even it's not in the kata).
Depends on how the style is taught I suppose.
Personally I've been to few classes.
The head sensei is a 9th Dan from Okinawa but the classes are not purely traditional I feel, we use pads to practice punching and kicking (like in Muay-Thai) and spar full-contact.
Well your question is very interesting, and I'd love to hear what other people think about this.

looks good... but where's the snap. that is what separates the reverse punch from the thrust punch.

Should u rotate rear foot? I've heard that u dont need to rotate it..

Thanks for your question, sir. Both methods, in my opinion, are valueable and provide different benefits. And although it can be performed when the foot is fixed and rooted on the floor, as in zenkutsu-dachi, I think it's of vital importance to learn to punch in a more dynamic manner, which would include practicing pivoting on the ball of the foot as well as in other positions. At some point in our development, becoming mobile is essential, and this method really lends itself well in that environment. Thanks again for you interest.
