The Growlanser RPG series started in 1999 with Growlanser on the PS1 in Japan and continues to this day with six primary games. Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time is an updated re-release of Growlanser IV which debuted on the PS2 in 2003. The story revolves around an ancient civilization which was destroyed 2000 years ago and rebuilt only to face danger again. You play as a "ruin child", one found in an ancient ruin, who has special powers to open doors. Gameplay is loosely styled on tactical strategy games and features anime cut scenes and artwork by Satoshi Urushihara. Fans of lengthy JRPG video games and tactical strategy should enjoy the deep plot, character depth and robust gameplay. Satoshi Urushihara has worked on many things including the Langrisser series which is often thought to be the "spiritual inspiration" for the Growlanser series.

Same. I poured so much time into Growlanser II in Generations that I needed a year or 2 break. I loved the story as little as I can recall it but the battle system took me a bit to get into and then I was so hyped during them all. Can't wait to play III and then once that's done I will be getting Wayfarer of Time. Then I'll finally get to open my limited edition of Heritage of War!
This game has sucked up my life. I'm about 40 hours in. It's really good.

If you like Growlanser, then you should play Warsong (Langrisser) on the Genesis which is the first game in the series.
I wish they ported the other Growlanser games for the vita.
Or better yet put it for PCs and especially Switch and Ps5 n Xbox x.
I highly recommend this game if you want a long jrpg with many choices and character relationships. I am around 54 hours on my first playthrough and the game has "more than 40 endings possible" depending on the choices you make throughout the game.

As much as I love the Growlanser series I really wish they would bring back Warsong/Langrisser Hikari. While Growlanser is the spiritual sucessor to these games I long for a day when the tactical awesomeness of Langrisser Hikari returns to us ):
I got this game when it was on sale and I can say that the story is very intriguing, but I feel the combat leaves some to be desired. I'm about 8-9 hours in so I'm assuming and praying the combat opens up some, but it is very well done ^_^

I also never said Growlanser was the best(although Growlanser 1 is easily up in there and better than any Final Fantasy game).

And i agree extremely under-rated. I miss this series alot. I haven't got around to finish this one yet. It's probably the most challenging. But growlanser 2 and 3 were my absolute favorite and i would love to have another like that.

CGR should do a review of The Legend of Dragoon, it was an amazing underrated RPG for the playstation one I still play it to this day on my psone!

The party consists of the main character. Max from Shining Force 1. Elk from the original Dot Hack series and tv series. Plus the price from Final Fantasy 2.

Yes, every game you see when you open the PlayStation Store on Vita is playable on the device.
Love this game.. however.. I do wish there's a guidebook that goes along with it.. it can get challenging and I also want to know what to do somwtimes or what I can do... other than that, if u love JRPG then this is a great game to try out.

I thought so. I was in the store when I first saw it on the shelf, I was trying to figure out why the girls looked so damn familier. (sigh) Gotta love Japan. They be the only ones that can make games with look a likes from mature movies into regular games.
Easily one of the hardest games i've ever played.
if you think atlus is "kinda cruel" in this regard, you better never get in contact with the words "compileheart", "nis america", "idea factory" or just any jrpg with SEGA written on it, and yeah i did this on purpose^^
I haven't play all the way through 4 yet, but I have beaten 1, 2 and 3 so I know more about Growlanser than you do.
If people say 4 is supposed to be better than 1 than 4 has to be pretty damn good to even compare to 1.

You should import the PSP port, it is REALLY good.

I also play a lot of borderlands 2 ($20) which i clocked in more hours than MF4U + Fire Emblem +Shin Negemi Tensei combined on my 3ds
Freedom Wars($15) kinda like a futuristic Attack on Titan type game
Soul Sacrifice($18) the best story i have ever been engaged on.

It's not really mashing two unrelated words together. Growlanser is a word made up by the game developers... It means "savior of light" in the game's universe. They say it like "Guro-ran-sa" though :)

Lawl, magic and angel put the end of the world, but the best plot Sephiroth became mentally insane, welding a long sword to kill every friend, friend and everyone in his way to process as Birth God from Lifestream and summoned the black materia to wipe the entire world for his hatred, gruesome.

I laughed hard when I saw the reviewers characters fight the enemy with only spells when you save Hien. I gave the two swordsmen null magic and made them use decoy and all the mages were preoccupied wasting magic on magic immune soldiers. This game REQUIRES tons of grinding for skills and a lot of thought for determining your strategy against loads of enemies. This game is not for rpg noobs.

Import Growlanser 1 for the PSP, use Borgor's translation guide and play it so you shut up.
Yes FF7 is interesting, but it is still not as good as Growlanser 1 because the gameplay is just that much fun and the characters are absolutely great.
I would take Carmaine as a main character over Cloud any day, and likewise Gevel over Sephiroth, or Julia over Tifa etc.
