In 1977, after taking heavy LSD and going to a Pink Floyd concert, my still-tripping friends and I were sitting on our roof listening to music. I put this album on and this song came on AT EXACTLY THE MOMENT ALL THE BIRDS AROUND OUR HOUSE STARTED SINGING. Never forget that bliss.
Legend is, Dave Holland wrote this in an old appartment atop a cafe in Amsterdam where he often studied at the Conservatory. One morning, he was watching all the birds outside his window and noticing their interactions. This song is his musical description of the interaction of those birds in Amsterdam.
There is a medieval Arabic Text called The Conference of the Birds as well, it is a beautiful story. I have no reason to doubt your story, but I would be surprised if he was not aware of the title of the story to use the exact same words for his tune and album. Probably my favourite of his also.
I was in my 20's, 57 now. This piece was introduced to me by a girlfriend 19 years older than me who lived in Le Marais, Paris. June 84 or 85. Never forgot this piece, neither the girlfriend. Last winter I listen to it before meeting my students online. Just after listening to it I took a brief walk and saw above me a flock of wild goose flying south, wow!...One of these moments of grace and synchronicity.
When I was 15 (in 1974) this was too outside for my tender brain. Took me another year of listening before I got hip. This, Circle-Paris, Out to Lunch and a two-album set by Anthony Braxton were at the top of my listening lists before too long. Very beautiful album indeed.
Dave Holland is a genius. Never have I ever heard something as unique as this work. The way the wind instruments play along the stereo channels in my headphones. A perfect display of controlled chaos. The two channels talk about a similar topic, but go off on their own tangents, occasionally reconvening, saying the same thing. It echoes the synchronization of two grandfather clocks. They articulate the exact same idea, but each in their own unique way, It's beautiful.
Early on in my transition from rock to jazz listener, I was introduced to this album, this song. Holy shit...David Holland's bass sounds like my idea of heaven, or nirvana, or utopia...take your pick. Braxton and Rivers softly drew me in...maybe I'd toked a bit, too, but DAMN! This song has never left my soul, decades later. True heaven was seeing Holland live in Ann Arbor...be still my heart, and my toes...absolute musical perfection!
@@SpindlyMoon thank you. I lost touch with that "someone", but it just so happens that I was thinking of them when this piece came on, completely randomly. Although not a believer of cosmic power nor of religion, I can attribute this incredible coincidence only to love, and our particular set of circumstances. Hope things are going well for you stranger.
Me too, it was one of the Don's tunes playlists. I'm 39, and i still can't believe this composition and myself lived separately for such a long period of time. It's like i found a brother i never had, 1:48 often brings tears to my eyes. :)
29 years ago for me after having heard Sam Rivers and Dave Holland live. The shop was in San Francisco's North Beach. Holland signed the insert for me at Newport. I could go on.
Let's hear it for record stores, especially used record stores where you could listen before buying. I spent countless hours over many years standing at a turntable with headphones and a stack of records to evaluate. Even though it's so much easier to access a ridiculous amount of recorded music online, I don't think I would have had the same sense of discovery, engagement and awe, somehow, sitting at home and exploring at a laptop.
was this song in windows xp default music folder? i was thinking to find a new song today but as soon as it started it took me somewhere around 20 years ago and the first thing that came in my mind was that folder in my very first pc, dunno why
since everyone has commented here i just bought a pikap (i dont know what you guys call that in english sorry) and to my chance i saw this album and im glad that i choose this i know its a bit strange to buy a old machine rebuilt but you know wonders a wonder and i still play this plaque once a day (for now atleast)
Randy and Michael Brecker were originally on horns when Holland played the song live, but Sam Rivers and Anthony Braxton were chosen to do the recording. Would love to hear the Brecker's version.

Are you back now?
Have you landed safely?
Life is magic
You guys should get together and do it again. Then afterwards, listen to "The Fish" by Yes! And then "The Albatross" by Pink Floyd....

The liner notes report that!
An absolute classic. Love that tune so much 👏👏👏
I love this song so much. I love how the leads both sound like birds with distinct personalities

I am 70 now and it keeps getting better!!!
This song makes me think about Autumn mornings, cool air coming through my windows as I sit at my desk, drinking coffee. Pure bliss.

1st time. What have I just heard? It's blissful. Down the rabbit hole I go.
Someone just introduced me to this. N I am absolutely hooked! I am a resident at a nursing home. My friend that introduced me to this is too.
Knock knock. Who's there? It is me! There is no room here for you and me, there is only we. We love you!!
Hope all's well Suzanna! I am also loving this song :D

@@suzannabienkowski2033 that's a very touching and beautiful experience. Truly the music can bond us like nothing else.
I saw them play this album at the Keystone Korner. Amazing. Braxton solo to start, the other three as a trio and then Conference as the third set.
This tune is so nostalgic for me ❤ one of my faves
i'm quite new to jazz, 30ish years old and i discovered that song on a playlist on Spotify. i have been obsessed with it since...
Me too. The playlist is "Jazz Classics"

What a great record!.... Found this strolling around on a rainy day in Naples , Italy almost 30 years ago....
a beautiful song on double bass
thanks to Dave
Sublime. I borrowed a bit the theme to write an organ arrangement for our wedding procession some years back.
Exquisite tone poem!
I heard this long ago and have been searching for it. Mesmerizing. Thanks Dave and ECM.
A VOIX NUE ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Astonishing. It sounds like it was recorded yesterday. I first got this album at a used record store 20+ years ago.

Ce morceau évoque pour moi le Médoc en Gironde. Souvenir de moment passé dans cette région très attachante.
