- Introduced by Canon in 1993. The eye-level viewfinder uses a roof mirror, making this camera the world’s smallest and lightest 35mm AF SLR when it was launched.
With the prewind system, the entire roll is first wound onto the take-up spool. Then each time a picture is taken, the exposed frame rewinds into the cartridge.

Photography And More I've been using disposable cameras for a year now, and today i was with a friend i don't see too often when i randomly mentioned that i wanted to buy a regular film camera. she said that she had one that she was given as a gift, but doesn't use, and that she wanted me to have it. it is a canon rebel x from around '95. im so happy!
@@virginiac7231 Congrats!
It's interesting how these cameras advanced in the time from hand to hand to finish with the correct person.
Good luck with your new camera!
What kind of film can I use?
My parents used this camera to capture my childhood. I recently found out we still have it, so I'm going to try and check if it still works. This video will help a lot!
Hi Lalo Asael Ríos,
One time upon a teacher tell us "the best photographs in the world are those that our parents took when we were children".
I hope you can make the camera work and you can take many pictures.
Thanks for you comments.
I was collecting old cameras at yard sales, never really thinking any more about it. After the past ten years learning digital photography, this 66 year old hobbyist has had enough in the digital world. I am dusting off these old cameras. One is the Canon EOS Rebel XS in really good condition. Everything seems to be working, now I just have to get out there and test it. I am excited to get back to film and try to remember everything I learned in my high school "Photography 101 Class" back in 1975!
Started film again with an AE-1 program I got from my grandpa. Got tired of carrying around separate lenses when I want to shoot both film and digital. Got one of these bodies to work with my existing EF lenses and it's been so much more convenient also thanks to autowind and autofocus. I shoot film much more often now!
I found this camera in a charity shop! it already has film in it and has 8 shots left so I'm excited to see the previous owners photos when I get it developed :))
Thanks for the video, it helped me tremendously. My father bought the camera in America, San Francisco. The camera dusted until last week but today I took my first pictures with it. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do this with the video.
Hi Tim,
It's great to know you found the video useful, some magic is in these cameras that we inherit.
Good luck with your pics!
Recently getting into photography I got my hands on this amazing camera today at my local flea market .
Hi, thank you for this video. It helps me a lot when I try to find out how to use my vintage film camera.
Hi Ha Anbebl,
It's nice to know that you found it useful, thanks for watch my videos and good luck with your pics!
Thanks for the video! I was wondering if you could make another, possibly show us how to do double-exposure? And also explain what the -2.-1...1.2 means? Thanks again for great content!
Just shoot again on same film to double expose. And those numbers are the light meter
Just bought a 500 and battery grip in mint condition from a well known auction site for a crazy low price, I'd recommend buying the battery grip if available, as you can use AA batteries, this is a money saver, film is ordered and I'm set to go... Can't wait. Great video, no talking just showing, excellent. Many thanks.
Hello Rob,
Thank you for the recommendations you make us and for your comments.
Thank you so much for this video, I collect cameras and this is my newest addition ❤ I bought it from a local antique shop after rummaging through their tech bin.
Maddie,
That's shops are wonderful, you never know what you can find, thanks for sharing your comments with us!
Thank you. I have been taking photography classes and came across the one that my parents owned.
On the EOS Kiss model, a small amber lamp on the lower left external eyepiece frame illuminates when the camera is in panorama mode.
My mum traveled the world with this camera and I am doing the same thing in only 15 rn so just visiting kangaroo island and victor harbor in South Australia I am from Melbourne so more city in my area. :)
Hi Lauren Marsh,
Thank you for sharing your story with us!
Photography acquires a special value when we have inherited a camera.
I'm new to the camera world so I found this a little confusing. I was wondering what should I set the desired iso and shutter speed/aperture value for someone who is barely starting out ? I don't really know much so I'm trying to start off with basics and go off from there. I got my camera from cleaning out my garage and the lense is a bit older as well going from 35mm to 70mm. Sorry for the whole paragraph I just want to get cleared up on things and was confused if I should set my own settings or if I should just follow the steps in the video. Thank you.
Hi Lin,
- The ISO value to use is the same that is printed in the film magazine. This value can be set automatically by the camera if the magazine has a DX code, otherwise, it must be set manually 1:27
- An easy way to start using your camera is to set the Shotting Mode to "P" 1:52 since the camera would automatically set the shutter speed and aperture values according to the configured ISO value.
This Shotting Mode will get a good exposure most of the time, but sometimes the result will not be what you expected or what you were looking for.
Therefore, I recommend that you learn to use the Shotting Mode "M" Manual 4:24 (for the moment, do not take into account the explanation of Bulb Exposure) which is the best way to have full control over the camera.
A key part of using the camera in Manual Mode is learning how to measure light with the camera's built-in light meter 6:16
You only have to study a little of theory to know what effects you get with slow shutter speeds and what effects you get with fast shutter speeds.
Likewise, it is necessary to study what effects are obtained with large openings diaphragm or small openings diaphragms (Aperture).
I hope that with the above you have resolved your doubts, if you have any other questions I will be glad to answer you.
I have the “newer” (it’s like 10 years old at this point) Rebel XS DSLR, and I’m looking to pick one of these film ones up soon. Thanks for the video!
Hello,
Thanks for your comments and good luck with your searching!
Hi. I just got this camera from a small antique shop I found in my town. so far its been fairly simple to find the proper materials to make it work, except after finally taking a few pictures the flash stopped working and I can't figure out why. I've tried searching around but no one seems to have this specific camera. Do you have any tips/suggestions on how I might be able to fix it. Awesome video by the way really helped me out.
very useful video thanks for sharing!

I just got this EOS rebelX camara. Can you please tell me the best beginner film I should get. Please be a specific as possible, this was my father‘s camera and it was passed down to me and I want to honor him
Hi,
I can recommend these two Fujicolor Superia X-TRA 400 or
Kodak's GC/UltraMax 400.
Love the video it was very informative! How do you turn the camera off? I set mine to the L but the screen showing the available film is still there?
Hello X X,
Theoretically, it turns off when the dial is set to "L", but if a roll of film is loaded, the available film will appear on the LCD panel, and that can drain the batteries, the solution I see is to remove the batteries when the camera is not being used.
Photography And More Thank you!! I’m still trying to figure this camera out since it was passed onto me with no manual 😅 any idea on how to turn off the small light on the front from flashing when taking a picture?
thanks i just got mine from my sister im going to Walgreens to buy the batteries. but alot of places stop doing film
Hello David,
Congratulations on your new camera, luckily there are still places where we can get film.
Good luck with your pics!
Also getting this beauty as well
What film did you use??
Does it matter the film you put in the canera
thank you so much for this video it was so helpful but my camera automatically uses flash how do i turn it off?
when pressing the shutter button halfway trough, gently lower the flash with your fingers and it will not raise once you press it all the way through
👋 hello , can i ask you about something? . How do you send the photos you have taken to your mobile phone ? If possible please reply
Hi,
It is not possible to send the photos to your mobile phone, because these types of cameras were designed to use film.
@@photographyandmore yeah just realized that i cant lol , thanks anyways ❤️
Hello! Can you tell me how the little window on the back of the camera works? I've run out of batteries and can't get any more, so I'm thinking of removing the film and using it in another camera. When i look through the window, I see a purple bit that says "Superia 200-24-200". Does this mean the film hasn't been used, or that all the frames but 24 have been used?
The 200 is the iso and the 24 is the amount of frames you will potentially obtain from using that film canister. The little window is just so you can remember what kind of film you put in because if you wanted to know you wouldn’t be able to open the door all the way.
Hi! When I put the film in and turned it back on, it didn’t wind the film. Any ideas on what to do?
The main dial seems to be broken on mine - can turn it but nothing happens! Camera shutter is working fine though. Any ideas on what could be going on?
Hello Xiao,
I suggest you take your camera with a technician.
For the “Program AE”, when I set the dial to P, the two numbers don’t show up on the screen. Am I doing something wrong?
Hi Andrew Seliga,
You need to press the shutter button halfway or turn the main dial to appears aperture and shutter speed values.
Will a ef cannon 50 mm lens be compatable on this camera? if not what lenses are compatible for this camera?
Hi Derek,
A 50mm EF mount lens is supported.
EF mount lenses are compatible with this camera, EF-S mount lenses are not compatible with this camera.
@@photographyandmore oh ok Thank you!!!!
Hello, how can I check a battery if my display pane was damaged before? 😢 And is there any chance the ISO will be set automatically?
Hi Y Uyên Đào,
I think the only direct way to check the battery is by LCD panel.
One way to know the status of your battery would be to count the number of rolls you take.
The manufacturer mentions that with two CR123A lithium batteries at normal temperature and without using flash you can take 60 rolls, with 50% flash you can take 25 rolls and with 100% flash only 12 rolls.
If you use film with DX code the camera automatically set the ISO value.
What kind of lens mount is this? EF or EF-S Definitely doesn’t fit my canon t3 dslr lens. Thanks!
Hello Ayana,
The compatible lens with this camera are the EF lens mount, EF-s mount not are compatible.
@@photographyandmore Thanks!
I have the E0S rebel with an attachable flash, does it automatically expose?
Hi, i used this camera a couple days ago and finished a whole roll but I think before it was able to rewind the film it shut off. I thought it was a battery issue but I put in new ones and the LCD would not turn on, and the whole camera itself won’t turn on. Do you know what the cause might be and how I can fix it? I still have a roll inside and I’m scared to open it or else I expose my film.
Hello Klarence,
When you load the film into the camera and close the back cover, inmediatly the film is wind forward.
When you take a picture these film portion is rewind into the magazine, when you take the last frame, practically the entire film has already been rewound in the magazine.
I want to think that it is already possible to remove the film from the camera.
I hope I am not wrong!
Does use EF mount lens?
When you set the camera ISO, are you suppose to match the film ISO? For example, if you insert 400 ISO film, do you then switch the camera to 400 ISO?
Hi rochat,
If the film has a DX code attached to, the ISO film to be set automatically, but if your film has no DX code on it or if you want to use the technique Pushing or Pulling Film you can change ISO value manually.
Generally yes you do as the film is rated for that iso to be best performing but if you are going to push or pull film that is a different story I can’t explain that my self so look that up
Does it have to be on iso to start taking pictures? What does it have to be on to start taking pictures?
Hi Matthew,
Set the command dial to "P" to start to take pictures.
Is the film required and how to I extract the photos I made to a computer or desktop?
Hi ShisuiGamer 9,
Film is necessary for this type of camera, it is not possible to transfer the photos from the camera directly to a computer.
All photos are taken on the roll of film, the roll is rewound and removed from the camera.
The film cartridge is taken to a laboratory where they are still developing the film and the negatives are asked to be scanned in order to have the photographs in files that we can see through a computer.
Hey I just got this camera at a cheap price, put a roll in it and the problem is that the film counter advances when I shoot without a lens but when I shoot with a lens the counter stays in place. I have swapped batteries, but that doesn’t seem to fix it. I’ve even switched between MF and AF on my lens to make sure it wasn’t focus locking. Do you have any idea what this issue could be?
Hi Crunchitto,
Never heard of this kind of problem, I hope someone from our community can help you fix it.
I just got mine and I’m following every step it’s just your camera is showing something my camera isn’t every time I press the button to take a picture the LED screen it says BC I changed the iso to 400 then set the command dial to p and numbers for the desired doesn’t show so I can’t set them please someone help
Hi Enrique,
When appear "bc" can meaning:
The batteries are nearly exhausted.
Remove the batteries and wipe the battery terminals and reload them. If the "bc" indicator still appears, replace the batteries with new ones.
Or the camera's self-test process detects an internal malfunction.
Release the shutter once, if the "bc" indicator goes out, the problem is corrected and you can continue using the camera normally.
If the "bc" indicator does not stop, the camera needs to be examined by an camera technician.
What model were you using in the video itself? I can't seem to figure out what model mine is?
Hi yves-carmine,
I used for this video the Canon EOS Rebel X S camera.
What words has printed in the camera body of your camera?
@@photographyandmore mine is just labeled "EOS Rebel". It's a 35mm film camera, no flash, and has the same lcd display/button configuration as the one in your video.

i have this camera and i think i might accidentally pushed the release up and the back opened. i removed the film from inside but now the back will not close. any tips? 😔
Can i put a battery grip on this
how do i rewind halfway through the film
Is thia camera worth buying?
no, just got it and im so annoyed for many reasons , you can't get the pictures on your computer, can barey see the picturees you take unless printed, you have to go somewhere to get film printed , i mean its cute to have.. but if you have the opportunity to get another one, get another camera.

Do I have to take out the film for the camera to turn off
Hi el picarro,
Isn't necessary take out the film to turn off the camera.
Just turn de command dial to "L" position to turn off the camera.
How do the view finder work with manual focusing?
Does it have a depth-of-field-review button?
Hi NorceCodine,
This camera does not have a button that allows you to preview the depth of field.
hey! my friend give to me a camera like this and it appears bc, what does that mean?
Hello Raq Lopez,
There are two situations in which the "bc" indicator will be appear in the LCD panel.
1.- When the batteries are nearly exhausted.
2.- When the camera's self-test process detects am internal malfunction.
If the "bc" indicator appears, perfom the following operations:
1.- Remove the batteries, wipe the batteries terminals and reload them.
Check the batteries again. If the "bc" indicator still appears, replace the batteries with new ones.
2.- Release the shutter once.
If the "bc" indicator goes out, the problem is corrected and you can continue using the camera normally. If the "bc" indicator does not stop , the camera needs to be examined by an specialized technician.
How do I look at the photos I taken?
Hi,
Since this camera is an analog camera, you must first load the film, take the pictures, extract the film and take it to a laboratory where the film is developed and printed on paper.
@@photographyandmore thank you!
What kind of film can you use for it,I just got one and I'm trying to get the film and batteries for it..
Pennie Treadaway any 35 mm film with a DX code will do and it uses two CR123a batteries :)
AMAZING VIDEO BTW
Hi Lauren Marsh,
It's great to know you found it useful!
Does this camera need light seals added?
Hi Jonathan,
It depends on the state of conservation of the camera, some remain in good condition over time in such a way that there is no leakage of light, we can realize this in the first roll that we take, when developing the film we will look for if there are veils of light.

how do i transfer the pictures to my computer?
Hello Lina;
Once the roll of film has been completed, it is taken to a store where the film is still developed, and very probably there they also offer the service of scanning negatives with what would already have digital files of your photos and thus be able to pass them to the computer.
Mine keeps saying BC, I checked and put brand new batteries in. Nothing

Was just wondering if anyone knew how to turn off the camera?
It’s too difficult is there a setting where I can let the camera do everything for me 😭😭
Hello Emilia,
Automatic systems are good at first when we are learning, but they are limited if you want to develop creativity, that is why some of us prefer to use the camera in manual mode.
What is the ISO for
Hi El Picarro,
The ISO is the sensitivity of the film to light, low numbers mean low sensitivity to light, and high numbers mean high sensitivity to light.
Generally, before we go to take pictures, we have to think about the light conditions in the place where we will take the pics, to choose the ISO film.
On a sunny day, we can prefer to use ISO 100 or 200, while on a cloudy day maybe needs ISO 400 or 800, in the night ISO 1600, 3200 or 6400.
Photography And More THANK YOU SM :)
Is this camera worth anything anymore? Do people still use film? I have one and wondering if anyone would want it.
Of course its worth buying! film photography is still a thing this days, there is a big community in the ytb/internet! You can search for other cameras to so you can decide for yourself wich one it´s better
I own this camera and just started experimenting with it a bit here and there. It’s worth owning for me, because I also own an EF mount digital rebel camera (t2i and t3i to be exact) so my lenses work across all of my cameras. The t3i was gifted to me, the t2i I had purchased a few months prior for a bargain, and the rebel X I got for $20 on the marketplace simply because I wanted the extra lenses that were being included with it. That said, I’d love to get ahold of an extra of this to give to my brother as a gift because he also uses EF mount cameras (he has a canon 90d now) so I’m keeping my eyes open for one haha.
