    Use paper Q-tips for cleaning, instead of the ones with plastic shafts. You can take the paper ones and cut them in 2 at an angle with wire cutters and the newly made pointy tips will remove any hardened paste in between components and in corners. Because it's paper, there's a bit of extra give to help protect the components you're cleaning. Also each Q-Tip gives you 2 little picks and once they're dirty, you simply toss them. Use electronics grade alcohol because it's 99% alcohol. Drug store alcohol can be as low as 50% alcohol while usually being 70% or about 90%. The weaker solutions don't clean as well.

    This is the kind of stuff I been doing since I got out of college. The kinds of stuff you can find for e-Waste is pretty incredible and people want them gone more or less so a lot of it is free or dirt cheap.
    Something like this is perfect for turning into a DIY router with the likes of software like OpenWRT. You could even dedicate this thing to something like Pi-hole.

    My wife bought me a Toshiba laptop with this APU in it back in 2013. It was low end at that time, but I wanted it for running Office and browsing the web. Almost 9 years later, and it is still going strong. I haven't even formatted the HDD in it. It started out with Windows 8, then upgraded to 8.1, then 10, and now it has Windows 11 on it. Even though it isn't technically supported, Windows 11 runs beautifully on it.
    Today it is used for watching movies and browsing the internet, which it still does very well.
    The only "gaming" I've ever done on it is running a few emulators.
    Maybe if you haven't already dedicated it to being a permanent server you could make a video on some emulation. You might be surprised how well it does. I don't remember for sure, but think I may have even used it for PS1 games. I know Gamecube, PS2 etc. are NOT something you will use on it though.

    Hi again..I commented on the 40 dollar Lenovo..and thought that was the bargain of the year..despite no RAM or HDD..it is..but this peculiar HP..I've seen before on another channel they bought new.. can't recall how much but it was a few hundred..you acquire for 15 bucks..another great deal..a kind of Laptop board in a Tower case..quite useful..and even stream games from Steam etc..amazing..great content..I'll be adding this channel to my watch list..thanks for the reply too.. I'll not be parting with my 3 x core2 duos anytime.. they're not eWaste to me either..my Dell Optiplex towers are about the cheapest (free in 1 instance and upgraded) over here in Britain..mostly I believe because the proprietary form factor makes them undesirable..kind of reverse mirror image boards..I like them..I got several free Laptops though..haha..and power supplies with a couple..all Dells..seems like Dell crazy but I have a few others too..2 Shuttles..an old AND 939..and few thin clients..and an ITX with an AMD J series dual core..

    Worth noting, you can usually use white mineral oil or another lubricant that won't eat plastic (canola oil actually works pretty well in a pinch) on the small bearing located behind the sticker on most case fans if you find they're spinning slowly or making a lot of noise.

    UA-cam is dropping frames per Stats for Nerds at 7:56 and 7:59, because it defaults to VP9 and AV-1 video codecs that your iGPU can't decode. That forces your CPU to do it, reducing performance, shortens battery life, and heats up laptops. UA-cam still has the standard h.264/AVC codec, but it tries to force newer codecs to save on storage/transmission costs.
    AMD A6-5200 uses Radeon HD8400, which has Unified Video Decoder 4.2 . UVD 4.2 can decode h.264/AVC, but not VP9 or AV-1. Add the h264ify or enhanced-h264ify extensions to the browser to force YT to serve h.264/AVC, allowing the video to play well the first time.

    A good addition to this computer could also be to add some more RAM. Usually older computers don't have enough RAM, rather then have to allow CPU or even graphic cards.
    And old memory could be cost effective upgraded, as they tend to not visst to much on E bay etc.

    I like your channel's content a lot.
    The shots are also well prepared and thought out, and the editing is nice and snappy.. (also, nice in combination with the script. The little jokes are accented /highlighted. Everything you talk about it shown on screen)
    * [small perfectionist note:
    the part where you remove the CPU cooler and say 'these little clips.. [Etc]' - that could have used an additional close-up shot...
    Even though it's relatively clear from the top, your hand gets in the way a couple of times.
    And understanding 'which part of the clip to press' could have benefited from that detail shot).
    Perfectionist stuff aside:
    very well done.
    High value, no bullshit :)
    This has inspired me to try videos of my own, finally.
    (as for equipment;
    It could be cool to get a DSLR camera for filming at some point. (Or simply a newer flagship phone)..
    So you can get those 'background out of focus' cinematic shots.
    And no, I don't have a camera like that either ;)
    But you're 37,000 subscribers ahead of me.
    Could lift your content to the next level, is what I mean)

Tricky powersupply though. Would make a great fileserver. Put another SSD in it and get rid of the optical drive ( you can glue it's front to the computer's front so it doesn't look ugly, or just leave it in place ).

    I really wonder what HP was thinking. That computer is the worst of both worlds: the downside to a laptop is that you're limited on expansion options, with the upside being that its self contained and portable. The downside to a desktop or tower system is that it isn't portable, but the upside is that it gives you more options for upgrades. That computer combines all of the disadvantages of both form factors into one package

    • @HardwareHaven
      @HardwareHaven  9 місяців тому +2

      I think they were selling this because:
      A. People were more familiar with desktop form factors and it “looked” capable,
      B. It let them reuse case materials and assembly lines rather than doing a redesign.
      C. Hard drives and optical drives were more common and necessary, so this case allowed for those.

    I like my 2008 HP dc5850 better. It has an AMD Phenom II B97 (4C4T; 3.2GHz); 8GB DDR2 (800MHz); 1GB GeForce 8400GS (16 Cuda Cores); PCIe 2.0; 4 SATA-2 plugs; VGA and DVI-D; USB 2.0 and a PCIe-x1 card with USB 3.0. I used it as main desktop till Apr 2019, running Ubuntu 18.10 with ZFS and a number of Virtualbox VMs, like Windows 3.11, XP and 7 and some Linux releases. In the end it had a 128GB SSD; 28GB as boot & swap partitions and 100GB as ZFS Cache for the 2 HDDs containing 3 500GB partitions with 2 partitions in Raid-0.
    Currently it is unused, since I have no SSD nor useful HDDs, the largest free HDD is 80GB with a lousy 60MB/s throughput.

      It really just depends on the specs and price. It seems like xeons can be a really good deal because not as many people are familiar with their specs, but they can also be a bit more tricky to find proper mobo and Ram for. Depending on your budget, also be on the lookout for some used prebuilt deals. A lot of i3 and amd Athlon systems get sold for pretty cheap, and those are typically better performers than even the high end 775 stuff, and also give an upgrade path
