"She walked through springtime when I was home, the days were sweet and the nights were warm," for me, this line encapsulates any true romantic love that I have experienced in my life..this is a great song..thank you so much for posting..
Such a tribute to Nancy and James. Emmy is legendary in putting together simple but brilliant arrangements with anyone. Such powerful voices that Nancy would be moved. This is peerless.
Geez God, I love this song! I'm sitting here on a cold, snowy pre-Halloween (!) night in CT, singing along with Emmylou and Dave, my Guild 12 string on my knee. Cudos to the extraordinary Nanci Griffitth (and James Hooker and Danny Flowers) for one of the most evocative, tender lyrics and melodies I've ever heard. For once, I wish I was a Texan. Just this once.
Emmylou has an in with God. As she ages she gets more beautiful and her voice does too. And she started off beautiful with a great voice. Possibly the greatest duet singer in the business. Don't mess with Emmylou unless you are prepared to go toe to toe with the Maker.
Please list everyone who was in that round. I saw it on ACL in the 90s. I recorded it but alas, it's gone after all these years. It was the first time I heard "Bartender". I cried through the whole thing.
You lucky person. I'm sure it lifted your spirits. So happy to see this beautiful song is sung and appreciated so recently. Cheers from Oz. It's always a happy replay for me.
Lyrics: Gulf Coast Highway He worked the rails He worked the rice fields With their cold dark wells... And when he dies he says he'll catch some blackbird's wing And he will fly away to heaven come some sweet blue bonnet spring she walked through springtime when I was home the days were sweet and our nights were warm the seasons change, and work will come the flowers fade and this old house felt so alone when the work took me away... This is the only place that bluebonnets grow Once a year they...
Nancy Griffith wrote this in collaboration with James Hooker and Danny Flowers. Her versions are absolutely incredible. Nanci and Emmylou are good friends. Emmylou was having a bad voice day. Wow.
I know that Dave Matthews became bigger than Emmylou ever dreamed of becoming, but I am sure that he's sitting there thinking, "I can't believe I'm doing a duet with Emmylou Harris."
Gulf Coast Highway He worked the rails He worked the rice fields With their cold dark wells... And when he dies he says he'll catch some blackbird's wing And he will fly away to heaven come some sweet blue bonnet spring she walked through spring time when I was home the days were sweet and our nights were warm the seasons change, and work will come the flowers fade and this old house felt so alone when the work took me away... This is the only place that blue bonnets grow Once a year they...
@felixstoweblue , Yeah...wish somebody would post it. It's actually brilliant and my favorite version of a great song. Emmy, long a hero of mine reaching back to Gram Parsons, is losing her range with age. That's fine. Life happens.
It's that stupid Dave Matthews. Ugh. Well, I dunno. I do gotta hand it to him a bit. I tried playing Nanci's original with Mac MacAnally and couldn't stand it.

My favorite song of all times. Also my favorite version. Dave kills it and Emmy Lou, shes a goddess. Brings a tear to my eye. RIP Nanci.
I could listen to these 2 sing all day and all night... just gorgeous!
Indeed. There's MUSIC and there's stuff not worth my time. This ...this is why we have ears.
I can't get enough of this song
Even still!
Dave Matthews is magnificent in this duet of Nanci Griffith's best love song.
Such a tribute to Nancy and James. Emmy is legendary in putting together simple but brilliant arrangements with anyone. Such powerful voices that Nancy would be moved. This is peerless.
Thank God this one's back!!. Thanks for posting. GREAT song, great version.
God's music.
Dave Mathews passion is superb, with Emmylou it is such a beautiful story.

AGREE: WELL SAID !!!! GRAZIE !
I was a Texan for 20 years. I've driven on Hwy 90. I've seen the fields of Bluebonnets. Nothing like it.
Emmy is a goddess. Dave isn't my thing, but he's great here. Such a perfect song that captures the sadness and hope of living and dying.

Great version of the Nanci Griffith classic.

+Amy Ogle this is more than beautiful
Around 2000 or 2001 at the old venue for Austin City Limits

@@marybrown8890 Julie and Buddy Miller, Emmylou, Dave, and Patty Griffin. I was there and it was fabulous!
Beautiful.
I was there... Austin City Limits, 2000.
fantastic :)...the whole gang is awesome, what a treat.
The voice of heaven
Saw Pete and Muara Kennedy perform this song at The Kitchen Garden Birmingham UKLast Sunday. Superb version from a lovely Couple.

The best there is! Burlington Bill busking on the road and on You tube!
"Beautiful"
@coozamel Yes, I absolutely love the Emmy & Willie version. And I also like them on Long Black veil! You have great taste in music and harmonies.
Brilliant version of Nanci Griffith song!
If you have the rest of this episode, please, please, upload it

Emmylou was having a bad voice day. Wow.
Nice, but I agree the Emmy and Willie version is my favorite. Dave and Emmy nail it on Long Black Veil though.
I know that Dave Matthews became bigger than Emmylou ever dreamed of becoming, but I am sure that he's sitting there thinking, "I can't believe I'm doing a duet with Emmylou Harris."
If you hear the commentary before, he's saying exactly that about when she called him! Not in this video tho
ACL, please re-play this show, my VHS tape of it BROKE!!!
I lost it at the line: "And when she dies she says she’ll catch some blackbird’s wing, and she will fly away to heaven".
RIP NANCY

Why is the rest of this concert absolutely nowhere to be found on youtube or google? Anyone know? It used to be.
What is this gibberish appearing on the screen. Looks like it might be mainstream media interpretations of the lyrics...
Was this before or after Nanci’s passing?
Austin City Limits circa 2000
@felixstoweblue ,

Do you have the rest of this ACL?
Unbelievable

she wrote this about her parents
Nanci Griffith wrote this with James Hooker when they were in a Pennsylvania winter thinking about home.
best version of this song is willie and emmylou's version
Nope. Nanci's.
I saw it written somewhere when Nancy heard Emmylou and Willie’s version, in the car, for the first time, it was so emotional she had to pull over.
Emmylou sounds like she's out breath.
Dave just ain't got it here. NOT HIS SONG...........Sorry.
emmy doesn't sound so good here
What?
It's that stupid Dave Matthews. Ugh. Well, I dunno. I do gotta hand it to him a bit. I tried playing Nanci's original with Mac MacAnally and couldn't stand it.
You spelled Dave wrong.
She sounds a bit out of breath. It happens.
