Joniec tells us what it was like in 1968 when he raced the original Cobra Jet Mustang. This is an incredible account of events that any Ford or drag racing fan will love. What a great story. I turned 12 in August of 1968, and I was just beginning my love for cars. I read about the Cobra Jet cars in magazines, and to this day have great respect and love for the cars and the drivers of that time. It was real racing back then, no computers, etc., just the man and machine. Thank you Al, for sharing your story with us!

    Very cool , Evan. That was Dave Wren in the SS finals. He passed away just a year ago but was still racing Mopars regularly at Mission Raceway in his last years. I have the utmost respect for Dave, like you and I are Ford guys through and through, Dave was like that for Mopars, daily drivers, tow vehicles, all Mopars, raced his first time in 1955 in a Mopar.

    Back in the 80's, I pulled up next to an LAPD squad at a stop light. They looked over at the "CJ428" on my hood, jumped out with their shotguns pointed at me, and arrested me on the spot. I did 3 years in lockup for Conspiracy to Commit Horsepower. Judge told me to switch to Chevy or I'd go right back in.

    Being a Ford guy for over 50 years now, I'm so grateful for everything you do for us,Evan! I was 17 in 1970,& thanks to my dad,i became a Ford guy when he bought me a one owner, '64 Galaxy 500 XL! I always wanted a '67/'68 Mustang, unfortunately i never had one. I came close! A guy had a '68 fastback w/a 428,4 speed for sale. Green w/ black interior. Beautiful condition, no dents or anything! He wanted $1200 for it,this was mid 70's by the way. Before I got an answer from the bank,he sold it! Keep up the great work,it's so appreciated!❤

    I saw all these cars run back when I was in Dover, USAF. There were some fast CJ's on the East Coast. I did not like Fords back then. We used to have huge street races on those beach roads and I don't remember any one bothering us! I remember one night there were 50 cars present. Cool stuff back in that era.

    At 12 years old in '68, living in the boonies of Missouri, I thirsted for all the info I could find about Fords and current motorsports. I can go back pretty far but was wondering I believe they had 427s in 68 but they had hydraulic lifters I don't know how many were built but I know they came out with the 428 later in 68 do I have my info right????

    • @godsowndrunk1118
      @godsowndrunk1118 Рік тому +2

      Your info is basically correct. There was a 427 in 68 known as the 7 Litre, that was installed in the Mercury Cougar ...the 7Litre GTE, If I remember correctly.
      That 427 was a de tuned hydraulic lifter
      version of the Side Oiler block.
      It used the same heads and cam as the 428 CJ , and was rated at 390 HP. ...which is very similar to the actual HP of the 428 CJ... though the CJ was rated by Ford at 335.
      Lazy for a 427, but lots of potential for increased power.
      They didn't make a lot.
      428 was introduced in the 66 Galaxie, but was souped up and installed in the Mustang as the CJ in 68. CJ's had an improved version of the 427 Low Riser head and the same cam as the 390 GT engine.
